To ask when realistically your will retire?

I mean realistically as in, you have a pension or other provision that is set up and tracking to meet your target.

What age will you be able to give up work and what will you do after?

Also how much is your provision tracking to give you as an income?

Retiring at 60 along with DH. Have a mix of pensions, ISAs, investments and mortgage paid off. We have been FIRE lite in places and that had helped enormously

Took the the view that after 53 if made redundant/sacked I would not stress about finding a job at the same level.

Children have left home so can downsize if need be at a later stage.

vodkaredbullgirl · 23/07/2021 11:43

When I'm 6 ft under lol.

NewYearmorestress · 23/07/2021 11:47

When I can't work any more. Paid into pension since 20s but low paid jobs mean low contributions and low projected income.

Monoxide · 23/07/2021 11:49

Never. I’ve never earned enough to pay into a pension. I needed every penny I earned to live today, never mind tomorrow. Until it became compulsory in 2012, but by then I was part time because of DC, so very little got put in the pot. I’m in my 40s now and not even eligible for a state pension never mind a private one.

Tiddleandplonk · 23/07/2021 11:56

I am late 50 and dh 61. We retired from our careers and are retired from them with pensions at 1.5 k a month. We have a mortage still and dependants tho. So we both work part time in non stressful jobs. ( Cleaning and gardening ) and live frugally. We cant go on big hols like others but it suits us .

Washimal · 23/07/2021 11:56

DH and I are mid 30's. Mortgage should be paid off by the time we're 50, and we have no other debt. My work pension is pretty reasonable and DH's is generous. I also stand to inherit a significant amount from my parents (only child) although I hope that won't be for a very long time.

We should both be able to retire around 60-62 all being well but I'm not sure I'll want to. I'm passionate about my job and the routine, intellectual stimulation and purpose that comes with work is good for my mental health.

fantastaballs · 23/07/2021 11:59

I'm 41, no pending at all but hopefully retaining next year as a teacher. My husband is 58 and has a pathetically small pension pot that is predicted to be about 9k. If I retire at 65 then a teaching pension could potentially give me £10-12k a year off I opt on for faster actual etc. We own a property for our refinement already, a ground floor Two bed flat with shower room etc. We are hopefully buying another rental property in a year or two and that will be our pension. We aren't fancy, we live pretty frugally... never paid More than £400 pp on a holiday and we could live quite comfortable on a total of £16k between us. Anything more is a bonus. I'm due an inheritance too but that won't be huge, around 15-25k .

bungaloid · 23/07/2021 12:03

I can't draw my private pension until 58, but that's when I want to retire. I do wonder whether I'll hang on a few more years if work is enjoyable enough and I'm earning good money, but my plan now is to leave ASAP! (40 now, so just 18 years to go). I'm putting a small fortune into my pension each year so if I can't retire at 58 then something has gone seriously wrong.

TiddleTaddleTat · 23/07/2021 12:08

I don't think I will retire . My profession has lots of flexible and part time opportunities so I am hopeful I can continue dropping down days as I get older. I'm mid 30s and don't expect many of my generation will retire in the sense that people have over the past few decades.

Jizzle · 23/07/2021 12:09

I just posted this in the other pension thread, but this is where i am at:

I could be doing a lot worse, i appreciate that, but i do see some numbers on here and financial subreddits that do make me a little envious!

In the interests of being open, i am 34 and currently have £60k in a defined contribution pension, contributing about £10k a year when I also factor in employer paying in and tax relief etc. I have about 30k in a S&S ISA, but not all of that will be for a pension, some for next house move etc. My partner has about the same, perhaps a little less in the pension.

We have quite a lot of equity in the house, maybe about £250k, but don't really consider this in our financial planning as we wont want to sell our house when we get older just for a little extra cash, we would want to live in it as long as we can.

The hope is to retire about 57/58ish if we fancy it, ideally we would want to be able to withdraw about 3-4% of our savings each year to give us about £35k a year, if we can keep to that percentage we should not run out of money or even really make a dent at all on the cash so that it can all be passed on to our daughter (minus IHT of course)

RuthW · 23/07/2021 12:11

I'm 52. I have recently had a pension forcast. I will be better off than I am now when I retire at 67. I can not afford to retire before then.

joolzfromyork · 23/07/2021 12:11

State Pension only ... (well, I do have a workplace pension but by the time I retire I think that will pay me about 40p per week)

2 years - 3 months - 8 days ...

(which is I think 118 Mondays - Gawd I really hate Mondays! - to go)

Sanguinesuzy · 23/07/2021 12:13

I'm 55 and a lowly band 5 ICU nurse although I've been qualified for years. I hope to flexi retire this year due to long covid. Pension is ok but I will have to work 1 day a week as I still have ds2 14 at home who hopes to go to uni. Paid off mortgage and have some savings due to an inheritance but really would like to work for a few years so we can live comfortably. Just hoping I'll recover sufficiently to be able to do the job. Funnily enough I have a band 7 colleague who's just retired at 55, no kids, now her pension will be good !

Hel82 · 23/07/2021 12:16

How come you are not eligible for the state pension? Have you checked your forecast? Even if you weren't working you should have got NI credits if you were getting child benefit.
NoBetterthanSheShouldBe · 23/07/2021 12:20

I retired on redundancy at 58 (privatised industry). The last few years at work were so tough it’s hard to say whether I’d have preferred my job to stay engaging and enjoyable for the last few years plus another 5 years, when my employee pension was due to have started.

The additional Retirement time has been lovely though, isolation times excepted

blue1000 · 23/07/2021 12:22

59 and retired yesterday

Coasterfan · 23/07/2021 12:24

I will be working until lunch time on the day of my funeral 😀

Iwouldratherbemuckingout · 23/07/2021 12:30

I am 54 and will be retiring between 55 and 56 when my mortgage is paid off. Pension will be around £35k, I will still still need to do some work but I will no longer work full time in a demanding senior role.

RealBecca · 23/07/2021 12:42

Im roughly planning to clear mortgage by 40, save for a bit, buy the dream house outright a few years later and start saving for a few rental properties.

So we could do it by 50 but might keep going to 60 by reinvesting and doing up houses (if market is stable) until we have a generous future proof income.

Ugzbugz · 23/07/2021 12:45

I'm 40 and would retire tomorrow if I could but realistically maybe never. Didnt start a pension until late and I earn okay but my outgoings are high.

Guess once I'm no use to the work place due to being to old will just have to go to sleep permanently 🤷🏼‍♀️ as won't have the funds to pay rent and bills.

YellowBellyCat · 23/07/2021 12:45

I guess between 60 and 65. I have a small pension from my 1st employer which kicks in at 55 but my main pension isn't until 67. I'm hoping to save a bit so I can manage for a few years before my main pension kicks in or see about taking it early.

Ugzbugz · 23/07/2021 12:45

@Coasterfan

I will be working until lunch time on the day of my funeral 😀
I am howling! This will be me!
RealBecca · 23/07/2021 12:46

What will i do after...volunteer a few different things that interest me, go on holiday, see friends, exercise, do childcare for any grandkids, garden. Support older relatives. Nap. All sorts! Just enjoy life. I cant wait to buy my freedom!

I might retrain after clearing the mortgage as kids will be in secondary school.

Fountainsoftea · 23/07/2021 12:46

68, I think. If I inherit my mum's dementia, it should make my lessons.... interesting. Not to mention trying to find my way home.

tiredanddangerous · 23/07/2021 12:48

I'm early 40s and hoping to retire by 60. Just need to work out what we need to do to make that happen now!
