2 primary schools, same town, same local authority, in England- year 6 kids.

Is school 1 right or school 2?? My kid is in school 1, friends kid is in school 2. Am I self-isolating my child for no reason now that changes have come in??

school 1 - says class bubbles still in place even after July 19th changes til end of term this week. On Monday sent a Yr 6 class home to self-isolate for 10 days after a kid tested positive.

school 2 - says bubbles still in place, but now a positive kid in class means bubble burst and kids send home BUT ONLY the Covid ++ kid needs to self-isolate. Yr 6 class sent home BUT other kids in the class don't have to self-isolate at all now unless they have symptoms and it's now up to test and trace to identify close contacts of the Covid ++ child and tell them if they need to SI or not.

So, wise ones. Does my kid need to continue to SI or not? She won't be going into school either way.
YANBU - school 1 is correct
YABU - school 2 is correct

According to our primary school it's school 2 who is right . It's very Confused

blackcurrantjam · 22/07/2021 15:35

So yabu

sailmeaway · 22/07/2021 15:39

A teacher friend at a school has said the same as our school for them, and a 2nd teacher friend has just said that school 2's way is their protocol!

Both my DC schools (1 primary 1 secondary) do the same as school 1

NotAnotherPushyMum · 22/07/2021 15:42

It’s school 1 that’s right until the middle of august at least.

Karwomannghia · 22/07/2021 15:46

I would say neither are right, T&T are supposed to id close contacts from now on. But if schools are keeping bubbles to prevent the spread, then school 1 is correct, what’s the point in sending kids home to spread it further as in the action of school 2?

sailmeaway · 22/07/2021 15:49

School 2 says that Aug 19th means a blanket rule change for under 18s but in the meantime they are correct re the need to SI in regards to class bubbles.
Messaged a couple of teacher friends and at least two more schools are saying kids go home but DO NOT need to Si.

This is all in the same town so in theory they should all be doing the same...

NHS test and trace have said our bubbles don't need to isolate. So positive case has gone home. Everyone else still out and about. That is from NHS test and trace

blackcurrantjam · 22/07/2021 15:52

Our bubbles are still at school Confused only positive case has gone home

FawnFrenchieMum · 22/07/2021 15:56

Our primary originally said they were keeping the same protocol as school 1 and the High said same as school 2.

Primary since said they have been told them must change to as school 1, but only if symptoms / tests were after Monday 19th. So all year 6 closed as a child had a positive LFT on the Sunday

sailmeaway · 22/07/2021 15:56

@blackcurrantjam and that changed from this Monday?? Well, if that's from T&T I'm letting my poor kid out of the house he's been stuck in since Monday!!

OP posts:
FawnFrenchieMum · 22/07/2021 15:57

Sorry should as they did go on to have a positive PCR but they took the date from the LFT.

FayeFayeFayeFayeFaye · 22/07/2021 15:57

Ours is doing what school2 are doing, now.

CakeandGo · 22/07/2021 16:00

Our school is saying close contacts (ie a bubble) still have to self isolate.
I don’t know if that’s their policy or the actual rules.

BobGalaxy · 22/07/2021 16:01

What's the point of sending kids home if they don't have to isolate? I feel like I'm missing something!

sailmeaway · 22/07/2021 16:03

p'd off that I've keep this poor kid indoors on one of the hottest weeks of the year for no bloody good reason!! LFT have all been neg and not a symptom in sight! Plus it's our 2nd back to back isolation as the bubble burst then back a day then burst again!

OP posts:
Bimblybomeyelash · 22/07/2021 16:04

School 2 is more correct. Close contacts should still be isolating, but it isn’t up to the school to identify who those close contacts are anymore. That will be done by T AND T. Most schools have decided to keep the same procedures as before until the end of term, so may still send bubbles home. Things should be different again in September.

sailmeaway · 22/07/2021 16:05

'What's the point of sending kids home if they don't have to isolate? I feel like I'm missing something!'

What's the point of sending 30 kids home for 1 positive - my DS has had FIVE 10 day self isolations without a symptom or positive test. Each time just the one kid was++ and if that kid was sent home only everyone else would have been fine.

OP posts:
toomuchfaster · 22/07/2021 16:08

DD's school is following school 1, two classes off currently and all children are self isolating. Fortunately no more positive cases so 1 is back tomorrow but the other burst Monday so won't be back. Our Head said the change to school 2 system is from 16th August.

sailmeaway · 22/07/2021 16:12

So, it's up to the school to interpret?? Because it seems that it should be clearer. Parents at our school are changing holiday plans and work and childminding arrangements for next week because they've been told their child HAS to isolate along with everyone else in the class. But it seems that it isn't actually the law now.

Youdiditanyway · 22/07/2021 16:15

As of Monday, the bubble system went out of the window. Suppose it’s now up to schools to decide what they do this week but in about a fortnight under 16s no longer need to SI unless they test positive. Seems a bit ridiculous expecting a child to isolate this week imo unless they’re positive obviously. I wouldn’t make mine SI when the rules change in a fortnight.

Babynames2 · 22/07/2021 16:15

The school I work at kept the bubble system the same until the end of term (yesterday) due to advice from the local authority, based on the high number of cases in our area.

I think the government decided to change the rules from the 19th based on the idea that most schools in the country were finished by then. But it left the ones still open for a week in a confusing position.

That’s what the pp is saying and I agree. Either send them home and they isolate or keep them in. Sending them home to have an early holiday is completely ineffective and they would be less likely to spread it staying in a school bubble!
GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 22/07/2021 16:19

My Ds’ primary school sent two whole classes home to isolate due to one positive case. This was last week but still madness.

My dd’s secondary sent the entire year home but only close contacts to isolate.
