To think the demand for dogs is decreasing?

We have been trying to adopt a rescue dog since last year. In spite of having a large safe garden, no small children and someone always being at home, we have been turned down by every dog rescue charity in the country.

For this reason, we have been looking also at buying a dog. I am quite organised and set up a spreadsheet of different breeds and have been monitoring prices since February.

What I have noticed is that dogs are roughly £1,000 cheaper than they were earlier in the year. Prices have steadily come down. Dogs that were £2k+ are now £1k+.

Has anybody else noticed this?

Well, that’s ridiculous! Especially since people are judged when buying a puppy. I mean if it’s eAsier than adopting then people will be more inclined to buy.

NoLongerWantHugoToWin · 22/07/2021 14:28

I've noticed a few more litters. I'm pleased to hear that. Smile

It's always been easier to buy. We were turned down and have successfully had bought dogs for years now.
Needapoodle · 22/07/2021 14:30

Have you tried some rescues from abroad? They're a lot more realistic about getting their dogs into homes.

Ilikewinter · 22/07/2021 14:34

Yes, we got a puppy 4 weeks ago and he was about half the price of puppies nearly 12 months ago.

SillyLittleBiscuit · 22/07/2021 14:35

That's a shame re the adopting. Have you been told why they're turning you down? We've got the same set up - no kids, wfh etc - and adopted really easily but pre-covid. Just seems sad you have to buy if you're willing and able to rescue.

KhalliWhalli · 22/07/2021 14:38

There are so many people on the waiting lists for rescue dogs. We don’t stand a chance.

Would you consider a greyhound? Plenty of those in rescues.

MittensOnKittens03 · 22/07/2021 14:47

Where are you based perhaps people can recommend a local rescue

Squizzes · 22/07/2021 14:51

I’m the same! we have two cats ans there just dont seem to be many calm dogs who will accept cats. i have also listed my name with all kinds of rescues and heard nothing. id much rather have a mutt, but feels like i am going to have to get a pedigree! id love to adopt- i thought there was a lot of talk about how many dogs would be abandoned. doesnt seem to have happened!

Hasn't happened 'yet', lots of people still haven't returned to the office and are still not regularly travelling.
Aprilx · 22/07/2021 14:56

I have looked up some prices for my breed of dog, they are maybe slightly down on this time last year but still well above pre covid prices.

hockeysticks89 · 22/07/2021 14:57

There are so many dogs in kill shelters overseas available for adoption. St Bernard and big paws rescue uk on Facebook listed numerous puppies about an hour ago, and there are many other rescues besides. Please look to adopt rather than shop wherever possible. Many overseas rescues consider children in the household, too. There are many reputable sources of adoption from overseas.

Endofether · 22/07/2021 15:02

Yippee great news ! I really want another dog but have been waiting for more normal prices !

KhalliWhalli · 22/07/2021 15:06

@hockeysticks89 We are registered on over 50 different rescue centre databases, both here and abroad. We just can’t get one.

Have you tried Chimney Farm Rescue in Hampshire?

Yep - we got one first time of asking.

Perfect first dog as well. Low maintenance. More like a cat in a dog-suit.

Rinoachicken · 22/07/2021 15:18

Have the rescues actually refused you or are you just on a waiting list?

If you’ve been refused have they told you why? From your OP I really can’t see at all why that would be.

BarberQueue · 22/07/2021 15:28

@Brigittebidet Yes that's we say about ours. She's a cat disguised as a dog!

We were turned down too. We now have a six month old GR
1forAll74 · 22/07/2021 15:32

A few people in my village suddenly bought puppy dogs during the lock down, some said to keep the children happy and to play with.

Now on the community FB, some are advertising for dog trainers, dog walkers /sitters etc. and because they are going back to work, on holidays etc... Not exactly the right kind of families to have a loving family dog in the true sense of the word..

EmeraldShamrock · 22/07/2021 15:35

The prices have dropped.
DS desperately wants a dog, I can't help but feel we're being overrun by dogs in society.
I really don't want to add to the problem.
The school run resembles cruft's dog show, the majority of owners swinging their poo bag on the walk. 🤮

Ilikewinter · 22/07/2021 15:39

@1forAll74.
Weve had dogs for the last 20 years or so, unfortunalty we have always had to work and our dogs have gone to doggy daycare or had dog walkers, it doesn't mean that we arent worthy of having a dog, it does mean that we earn an income to keep it fed, healthy and give it a home for life.

InteriorDesignHell · 22/07/2021 15:46

I know the greyhound rehoming group we get our dogs from does have dogs and is still looking for homes for them.
Seriously, when we first looked into getting a rescue dog, decades ago now, it was explained to us that most of the dogs "regular" rescue places had were there because the previous family weren't coping well with them. Sure you got a few dogs where their owners had died but they would normally be off like a shot to another little old lady!
By contrast the greyhounds (which are bred not only to run fast, think later...or indeed never... But, crucially, to be easy to handle in large numbers!) are just up for rehoming because their racing days are over. Some never even raced. Typically they are used to a quiet life of routine, mainly spent lounging around listening to the kennel radio, and in the main don't expect much excitement from their new homes.
They are, I admit, funny looking dogs, but they are dogs ...
