To think the demand for dogs is decreasing?

We have been trying to adopt a rescue dog since last year. In spite of having a large safe garden, no small children and someone always being at home, we have been turned down by every dog rescue charity in the country.

For this reason, we have been looking also at buying a dog. I am quite organised and set up a spreadsheet of different breeds and have been monitoring prices since February.

What I have noticed is that dogs are roughly £1,000 cheaper than they were earlier in the year. Prices have steadily come down. Dogs that were £2k+ are now £1k+.

Has anybody else noticed this?

@KhalliWhalli with overseas rescues they're too busy to trawl databases, they put the dogs on Facebook and you contact them at that point. I got my retriever cross by being the right person in the right place in the right time in Facebook. I'd recommend following them all and checking constantly. Dogs in rescue over here are treated fairly well, over there they are not.

EmeraldShamrock · 22/07/2021 15:47

My cousin runs a rescue she said it has never been as quiet, they won't allow any dog for adoption to a home with under 14's.
She has 13 puppies and 300 adopters on the waiting list.

Needapoodle · 22/07/2021 15:51

Now on the community FB, some are advertising for dog trainers, dog walkers /sitters etc. and because they are going back to work, on holidays etc... Not exactly the right kind of families to have a loving family dog in the true sense of the word.

What a stupid thing to write. Surely the fact they're looking for dog walkers shows theyre caring and conscientious owners. Some people have to work. Doesn't mean they can't have a dog.

Agreed with foreign rescues you have to follow their Facebook and enquire about a specific dog. They don't tend to operate waiting lists.

Lots of lovely dogs(and cats) needing homes in the UAE.... Good luck whatever option you go for op

VickyEadieofThigh · 22/07/2021 15:56

We adopted another rescue dog (the best dog I have ever known!) a few months before the pandemic started, from a small charity rescue in S Yorkshire. They have dogs all the time needing homes and have about 15 as I speak; two of the dogs have been in their kennels for almost a year now. Anyone who wants to take a look at them, feel free to DM me for details.

KhalliWhalli · 22/07/2021 16:47

@oscarandelliesdad We tried to adopt a dog from Sharjah! Unfortunately due to Covid it proved impossible.

Ah, so rubbish for you and the dog. Covid has wrecked so much. I have six Foster cats living with us at the moment and local Facebook is full of tragic stories of stray cats and dog desperate for shelter from the heat.

EvenRosesHaveThorns · 22/07/2021 16:57

You need to proactively phone a rescue whenever you see a compatible dog, not sit on a waiting list expecting a call

Hagqueen · 22/07/2021 16:57

The adoption rules around here are wildly complex here too - I work from home, have no children and didn’t have pets already. I had a small garden so wanted a small breed, but would be happy to walk a dog however frequently required.

I was rejected. I wasn’t specific on breed, only size, but did want a dog who would be ok around children but any age animal was fine - I suspect that was why!

Pups round here deffo have dropped in price- breeds that were previously 2-3k are now £1-1.4k. I ended up with a puppy and paid over the odds, but no regrets here!

TimeForTeaAndG · 22/07/2021 17:01

Another greyhound owner here Grin big soft boy who sleeps, eats, has a siesta, has a snooze, plays, another lie down then it's bedtime 😂

Breed specific rescues are often far better for actually rehoming their dogs.

AlternativePerspective · 22/07/2021 17:06

I wouldn’t adopt from abroad because you are more likely to get a dog with serious behavioural problems and no rescue to fall back on.

TBH I would never hire a dog walker either.

There are several around here who walk their charges in the local park, and they generally have about 6/7 dogs at a time, none of which are under control. And other people I know in different parts of the country say the same.

EmeraldShamrock · 22/07/2021 17:06

I think the greyhounds are sleek and confident with model like legs, very sophisticated.
There is a beautiful grey/blue coated greyhound local she is beautiful.

Terribly sophisticated
EmeraldShamrock · 22/07/2021 17:14

@Brigittebidet 🤣 living their best life.

Serena1977 · 22/07/2021 17:17

We were turned down from all the usual rescue places in the UK because we have a cat and two DC 9 and 8.

Didnt want to fuel the breeding market so a friend put us in touch with a rescue place in Cyprus. We were matched with a wonderful 14 month old who has been with us for 6 weeks now.

He is absolutely wonderful!!

Horst · 22/07/2021 17:20

Our local rescue only does visits tues-fri 10-2pm.

They always want to meet the entire household. They wonder why their dogs sit and fester away in the kennels 🤦🏻‍♀️

KhalliWhalli · 22/07/2021 17:34

@EvenRosesHaveThorns I spend roughly 3 hours per day ringing around, looking on websites, sending emails... it’s practically a full-time job. Yet we STILL don’t have a dog Sad.

Cherrysoup · 22/07/2021 17:41

Look at breed specific rescues, you’re in more of a chance.

Prices are definitely dropping.

Somanysocks · 22/07/2021 18:51

@Brigittebidet when I picture a greyhound in my head, that's the picture Grin

I think my next dog(s) when I can have one will be a greyhound.

Hm2020 · 22/07/2021 19:03

I’ve been following puppy prices and some breeds have halved in price since last year.

hiredandsqueak · 22/07/2021 19:09

I adopted ours from JLP Trust jlptrustanimalrescue.org.uk/animals-looking-for-homes/dogs-and-pups.html. They have dogs now looking for the sort of home you have to offer. They rehome all over the country but are primarily based in Rotherham.

fruitpastille · 22/07/2021 19:17

Do you have any criteria? I agree right place, right time is the way to do it and smaller rescues are a bit more flexible. I got mine because I was the first person to go and visit after seeing it on Facebook the day before. It helps if you have an 'in' by knowing someone who volunteers there. Or maybe you could volunteer yourself.

KhalliWhalli · 22/07/2021 21:12

Criteria: dog. Any dog. Don’t care if it’s old, ugly, has 3 legs, etc. We just want a dog and have so much love to give.

OP posts:
OhGiveUp · 22/07/2021 21:23

@AlternativePerspective Your comment regarding dog walkers are unfair. Not all dog walkers walk groups, mine doesn't, she walks the dog's individually.
