We have cream on a stone cottage with pale green door. Looks ok.

WoodPell · 22/07/2021 19:27

I don't mind them but I'm not mad keen on the current trend in our town of buying a 1930s house, whacking extensions all over it, and rendering white with grey windows.

I think and have always thought it depends on the house. I don't think anthracite grey suits that many properties however lots of clients state the want them when we first sit down. I often persuade them there ar better choices.
My new windows on my studio are black, with black exposed steel lintels so going for the industrial look. Our house windows are white but as both are timber it's not that stressful if we want to change them.
Recently I've a client who went for cream windows, another for dove grey (light), another in sage green and another in white - all suited the houses. My very favourite client has gone for anthracite but it suits the house and the rest of the very modern design.

It will date fast I reckon. I know it's personal but I really dislike grey windows. We have lots of overcast grey days in the UK and grey all over a house looks a bit miserable to me.

A house in our village has black, grey and green windows. All new windows but look quite odd together.

bigbaggyeyes · 22/07/2021 19:46

Watching with interest, I don't like the grey window trend, I think it's starting to look quite dated. However I have a white cottage that currently has wood windows and I'm looking at replacing them with upvc but I've been looking at an Olive Green colour

sst1234 · 22/07/2021 19:55

Grey vs white debate is like saying should I go for something that will date in the future vs something that is dated already.

Killerqueen2244 · 22/07/2021 19:57

I don’t think coloured window frames will date quickly if they match the style of the house especially now there’s so much choice. We’ve got Agate grey with the cotswold stone colour. In the village someone’s put cream windows in their grey stone house and another grey house has a light green.

I think things date quickly if houses aren’t sympathetically improved.

Purpleberet · 22/07/2021 20:02

We have grey and I love them. But our house isn't rendered, I'm not a fan of that look.

I'd say if you don't mind white then stick with it. To me white looks dated and has always looked tacky so Im pretty confident I won't tire of grey.

TheWernethWife · 22/07/2021 22:36

My neighbour round the corner has just had her mahogany windows and porch sprayed dark grey, looks really good. We just had our windows replaced but stayed with white, got a new anthracite grey door though.

Blessex · 22/07/2021 22:38

Grey windows? You mean around the outside? Don’t think I have even seen that….

ZaraW · 23/07/2021 06:14

My stone terraced house has wooden windows which are painted black. It looks fine. Personally I wouldn't choose a colour that is fashionable it will date in a few years.

MrsDThomas · 23/07/2021 06:35

My friend had just had a new balcony done in grey and it looks amazing. Very modern and looks like something out of St Tropez.

I have a white house and oak coloured upvc and they look dated yet only 8 years old. Couldn’t have white as that would have looked ridiculous with white render.

Grey looks great on the right house

Fashio · 23/07/2021 06:36

I hate. They’re as bad as those godawful doors with the long vertical handle

MrsDThomas · 23/07/2021 06:39

@bigbaggyeyesoh yes to olive green! I would do that on my cottage if I could afford to.

LynetteScavo · 23/07/2021 06:47

Grey UPVC already looks dated. The worst is when it's on a semi as it's so obviously not the original. Like fake wooden windows/garage doors.

On a detached house grey can look it can good. Very pale grey and black (aluminium?) seems to be the latest fad around here, although black might be what was put in originally, which is why people mate going for it.

The nicest windows I've seen are an off white/cream. I think they were put in about 10 years ago on a1930s house and they look lovely, and classic.

I think it very much depends on the style of your house as to what window frames to go for.
