Child tested positive on holiday...AIBU to feel despair

On holiday in the north of England, staying in a gorgeous cottage on the coast. Long awaited after (like everybody) an awful year. Three kids with numerous self isolations, emergency services job that's super hectic. Made it to the end of the school year with relief and set off on holiday on Sunday. Yesterday middle child felt hot to the touch and complaining of a headache, plus he had a cough. Did the responsible thing and got a Pcr test and it's come back positive!
We're packing up to head home and self isolate but I could weep. He's actually loads better but of course he's been sharing a room with his brother, we've been in the car together for days...I know we can't just carry on but I feel just despair at when this will ever be over! We're both double jabbed luckily so not too worried about the virus, but just so sad that even our much reduced holiday plans have been ruined.

Yes and people have been trying to stop infectious diseases spreading long before we understood what viruses were through the use of quarantine etc.

If somebody passes on Covid or anything else unknowingly that’s hardly their fault and nobody is going to blame them. If they have symptoms or have tested positive and they go on a pub crawl then of course people will blame them.

halcyondays · 23/07/2021 05:58

Sorry your holiday has been spoilt OP. We’ve also been away from Sunday and go home today and would have been disappointed to have had to go home like this although obviously we would have. What a shame.

@halcyondays

Yes this is so true. I was thinking of small pox and how all goods on ships with cases would be distroyed to try and stop the spread.

@AlternativePerspective

Isolate at the cottage. You can go for walks and not be near others if near beaches or countryside FGS. isolate means you don’t leave the house. You can’t possibly know that you won’t encounter someone else even on a remote walk.

OP I am so sorry that this has happened. At least you were almost at the end of the holiday, fingers crossed that you all stay healthy.

Absolutely - my family has just had COVID and they check to see that you are staying inside all the time. It is totally irresponsible to not do that if you are COVID postive
HereComeTheHolidays · 23/07/2021 08:40

I should add that we had to cancel our holiday as a result so I have a lot of sympathy with you OP

CeeceeBloomingdale · 23/07/2021 14:15

My family has just had covid and we received only one lack lustre phone call and nothing else. Luckily we aren't twats and did isolate properly but I've heard of people being called daily and getting knocks at the door whereas we had nothing after the first test and trace call

Karwomannghia · 23/07/2021 14:24

We had dd tested on Sunday and dh got tested too. Still no results for either but we cancelled our first week of holiday and have been isolating anyway. Dh has tried to chase up results but there’s nothing forthcoming. He got emailed someone else’s results (same name) including their DOB and nhs number. It’s an utter shambles.

I just rang the cottage company before buying our insurance. They said if we are called on to self isolate we would be told to go straight home - only problem being it's at least a 6 hour journey and we would need to allow our DCs to get out and at least go to the loo, even if we managed to get all our food for the journey delivered before we went home (lead time on supermarket deliveries etc not being zero).
I'm not sure what Test and Trace would say to us if they called (fingers crossed we never need to find out!) but if they said we could NOT do the journey the cottage company said we had to ring them.
Also we would have no landline and no signal.

Barmychick · 23/07/2021 17:38

Seriously well done you .As time goes by maybe you'll reminisce about " the lousy holiday " Hope you all stay well.

No, “they” really don’t.

Ha. Firstly I wouldn’t tell the cottage owners But if they found out and told me to leave - I’d say, nope! Try and make me.
igelkott2021 · 23/07/2021 19:26

The fact that they have DCs with them that will need to use the loo

That is really the least of the issues. You just stop somewhere and use a bush. In extremis you open both doors of the car and wee inbetween. Disgusting but better than going inside somewhere.

Anyway OP I hope everyone stays well or if you do get covid it's mild/asymptomatic.

user1490954378 · 24/07/2021 00:29

OP - oh no! I hope your child is better soon. Going straight home to isolate is the right thing to do. It sucks, but you'll rest easy knowing that you dod what was best.
Lots of people saying isolate at the cottage. Some even saying they would refuse to leave. Most holiday rentals require you to leave , if one of you tests covid positive, and for good reason. The fact that anyone would then even refuse to leave just goes to show the selfish, entitled mentality that sadlh exists in some people. How would you feel of you were renting out a cottage and someonectested positivecand then refused to leave to self isolate? I haveca friendcwho tents put a cottage, and is planning to use the cottage herself with her daughter and newborn grandchild who was born premature, aand now issues with his lungs, fter the previous holiday makers have left. Is it right to stay and increase the risks of infecting the next person? In this case, a vulnerable baby. I wouldn'tvdo this because I grasp the fact that we all need to behave responsibility, and pull up our big girl pants when things Don t go to plan and are generally shit. At the end f the day, I'm not going to be selfish about it. W are taking about lives here.

Typos sorry. Hope you can speak this universal language!

cuparfull · 24/07/2021 13:28

My brother has Covid, positive PCR 4 days ago, is a builder and is still working doing private outdoor jobs.
What can I say [embarrassed]

pinkstripeycat · 27/07/2021 11:52

You isolate where you are not go home to isolate! 😂

drspouse · 27/07/2021 13:18

@pinkstripeycat

You isolate where you are not go home to isolate! 😂
And yet, the holiday cottage they are in, and the company that's letting to us, have said you must go home to isolate.
