Child tested positive on holiday...AIBU to feel despair

On holiday in the north of England, staying in a gorgeous cottage on the coast. Long awaited after (like everybody) an awful year. Three kids with numerous self isolations, emergency services job that's super hectic. Made it to the end of the school year with relief and set off on holiday on Sunday. Yesterday middle child felt hot to the touch and complaining of a headache, plus he had a cough. Did the responsible thing and got a Pcr test and it's come back positive!
We're packing up to head home and self isolate but I could weep. He's actually loads better but of course he's been sharing a room with his brother, we've been in the car together for days...I know we can't just carry on but I feel just despair at when this will ever be over! We're both double jabbed luckily so not too worried about the virus, but just so sad that even our much reduced holiday plans have been ruined.

Are you suggesting that people who travelled possibly hundreds of miles by train are meant to find a taxi home / someone to come and collect them?

You obviously can’t get on public transport if you have covid.

Well that could put people in a bit of a pickle?
Crunchymum · 21/07/2021 14:46

But I of course understand.... makes me regret booking our trip now as we will be going by train.

SantaMonicaPier · 21/07/2021 14:50

Really sorry to hear this. The exact same thing happened to us at the weekend.

Happyoldbat · 21/07/2021 15:00

Someone asked about the ‘rule’ if you are ill while on holiday. Government guidance says in this situation the guests must tell the owner and go home if they are reasonably able to do so. If they are too ill to travel they are liable forthe cost of extending their stay, so you would be paying for the next person’s holiday at the very least. There are extra precautions that the owner has to take if there is a known case of covid at the property ( eg your waste would be classed as hazardous), so they must be told.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 21/07/2021 15:00

*NoIDontWatchLoveIsland

Look on the bright side once they have had it, you should be pretty low risk for getting it again

This is NOT true and you are spreading dangerous misinformation

*has anyone got the statistics on how common repeat infection is? Answer: not very. Not impossible, but the risk of children suffering repeat Covid 19 is statistically low eg less than 10%.

There isn’t really a good answer though, is there?

Go home on public transport - you could be infecting people

Go home via taxi - you could be infecting the driver, and that’s if you can even find a taxi who’s happy to drive a covid-positive household hundreds of miles one-way

Go home via a friend’s car - “Hi, Doris? You know how you were saying you always fancied a bit of self-isolation? Well have I got an offer for you!”

Don’t go home - pissed off holiday cottage owner, and pissed off next people who were due into it.

drspouse · 21/07/2021 15:23

The worry driving home with a child is not that the child will be in contact with others via a shop etc. but that they will need to use the loo/you will get in an accident or break down.
I don't know what the answer is, sorry!

Covidworries · 21/07/2021 15:49

@GoldenOmber

I assume this is a very expensive risk.
You would have to be honest with company. A private hire bus may be an option. Family use back door, everyone masked up. Cover expenses of journey, and bis cleaning and any loss of income while is not in use.

Or isolate in situ again is going to be expensive with having to pay for additional stay plus any compensation given to thise who have holiday cancelled.

Darbs76 · 21/07/2021 15:51

That’s sad. We have it at the moment, I’d drive back now as now way I could drive at the moment, feel dreadful with it (double jabbed too). Sod’s law isn’t it

Foxhasbigsocks · 21/07/2021 15:54

Op I have no solutions but I’m just so so sorry. It’s shit isn’t it

Givemetrees · 21/07/2021 15:55

I’m on a popular Northumberland beach right this second and I can assure you it’s not empty.

Our holiday let agreement says if you test positive and decide, or need to stay longer, you’ll have to pay for another week or longer, depending on who else in your party tests positive, also you have to reimburse the people who had weeks booked in the same house as they are missing out. I’d read your T&C’s on the rental agreement.

EllaPaella · 21/07/2021 16:01

I live on the Northumberland coast and our beaches are definitely not empty. Our hospitals here are filling up rapidly with covid patients again, we really do not need people telling people who should be isolating to feel
free to go ahead and go out and about when they are meant to be isolating!

Mixmeup · 21/07/2021 16:11

North East has the highest Covid rates in the country and really doesn’t need random Covid infected tourists traipsing about its (packed) beaches. Not that the OP was planning this.

I do wonder how this will ever end though. If being double jabbed isn’t enough then do we have to keep on isolating and trying to contain this completely uncontained virus basically forever?! Or when isolating ends mid August are we free to just go on our Covid-y beach walks while the actual infected person stays home?

Honey12346 · 21/07/2021 16:45

I felt ill last week on holiday, I felt weak, had a fever and a headache. I just lied in bed and took medicine for a few days until I felt better. Didn't get a test or came back home.

The lockdown took a lot of things from me, I couldn't attend a family members funeral, I become suicidal and spend several months waking up in fear that my even more suicidal friend will go through with it that day. I'm not having it take away my holiday too.

Especially since not isolating or testing apparently makes you a selfish today but it govt announced it's allowed tomorrow then suddenly it wouldn't make you selfish. Done with the inconsistencies and the expectance that we should give up absolutely everything for a virus.

HugoToWin · 21/07/2021 16:47

I'm so sorry to hear this, what a nightmare. I'm glad you're doing the right thing and going home unlike some idiots on here.

AnxiousWeirdo · 21/07/2021 16:47

"And North East beaches are pretty empty,"

Having just returned from 2 north east beaches, I can categorically say that this is not true!

So sorry your holiday was cut short op, I was dreading something like that happening with DD when we went away for the weekend, thankfully I got an isolation notice on Sunday evening which was when we were leaving anyway! Not to rub salt in the wounds ofc! 😂

comebacksunshines · 21/07/2021 16:48

Have I missed something where has the op said she has used , or needs to use public transport to get home. What’s preventing them just getting in their car and going home, without stopping, or just using self service petrol pump if they need fuel ?

Moutarde · 21/07/2021 16:49

@Schrutesbeets

Unpopular move, but I personally wouldn't have had a test.
Unpopular Dick move, but I personally wouldn't have had a test.

Fixed that for you.

MasterBeth · 21/07/2021 16:54

@goldfinchfan

No wonder those of us living in popular holiday places are dreading the invasion this year.

So OP going home is the right thing to do please do not be tempted to stay.

You and your famiy are right to go home. I wish more poeple understood that taking Covid to smaller rural area with less medical cover and resources is not really ok.

You just spread the Virus and tha tis why it is not going away.

This is appalling toxic language. Tourists aren’t an invasion. Cities aren’t unclean. The country and the coast aren’t some pure haven being spoiled by the great unwashed.
starfro · 21/07/2021 16:57

Love all the people thinking they won't catch Covid. Everyone will at some point, and most will get in multiple times in their lifetime.

Get jabbed and get on with life.

JudesBiggestFan · 21/07/2021 16:59

Well we are homeward bound. All sorts of wild thoughts flew my mind of carrying on regardless, but in reality of course the guilt would have killed me! We had Alnwick Garden booked, a sunset boat cruise, dinner at a pub in Bamburgh...just not sensible or safe. Of course Covid-y child is feeling loads better now and it kind of seems surreal! But we also have a three year old and a twelve year old and were we to get unwell 4 and a half hours drive from home we'd be in a real pickle. So so glad we didnt book to go abroad...can you imagine!
I guess one day this will be a memorable holiday...rather than a disaster that makes me want to cry!

JudesBiggestFan · 21/07/2021 17:01

Oh and we let the holiday let company know straight away. Stripped beds, cleaned surfaces etc. Apparently they'll be n on a Friday to 'fog' the place. We're an actual biohazard! Laughing else I'll cry. Really don't know how this all ends.

WeRTheOnesWeHaveBeenWaitingFor · 21/07/2021 17:05

That sounds rough but obviously you’ve done the right thing.
Spend some of your isolating time planning some local outings when your all free.

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/07/2021 17:08

Sorry to hear this. Happened to many friends for holidays and /or weddings

Hope rest of you ok
