Are you walking your dog in this heat?

Just that really. My dog is desperate for a walk, but I'm really concerned about the heat. I took him to a river yesterday so he could stay cool, but by the time we got back he had dried off and was panting.
Shall I just keep him in and stick to the hosepipe to keep him cool? He's a Labrador so not a thick shaggy coat.

We take our dog for a short walk in the morning and with water. The rest of the time he is either in a shady part of the garden (with access to water) or indoors under a chair or by a fan.

blahblahblah321 · 21/07/2021 16:10

We've been taking our dog out at 7am, she's black and small and finds the heat hard work, even evenings are too much for her

SueSaid · 21/07/2021 16:10

@SisterBeaverhausen

We have a Dalmatian and he hasn't gone out since Friday.

We do plenty of brain training games for him but he's not going to die from not going for a walk. He will from being out in the heat. He's struggling indoors as it is.

Get up early 🙄

Brain training games my arse. They need to sniff and walk outdoors!

ZeusandClio · 21/07/2021 16:10

Black lab, I take him nearby in the car to a large pond at about 9am. He has a 40 minute shady walk and then about 20 minutes in the water. He is then flopped out for the rest of the day as he really struggles when it gets over 23 degrees (he's nearly 4 so not elderly and generally pretty energetic). I definitely wouldn't take him any later or anywhere where he would have to walk on tarmac. I always think of that quote - "Missing a walk won't kill him but going on one could."

longwayoff · 21/07/2021 16:11

6am in the morning and around 9.30 at night. Half the usual walk or he'd be too hot and tired.

Bryonyshcmyony · 21/07/2021 16:13

Brain training

Ffs

alloalloallo · 21/07/2021 16:14

Whoever has said yes to this is disgusting! Even at 8am it's still 22-25 degrees

Not here it isn’t.

We go down to the beach at 7 for an hour. It was about 18 degrees this morning.

Then again about 8pm and she gets to play in the sea again - it was quite chilly down there last night - the area of beach that dogs are allowed on end up in the shade from about 6pm

MotionActivatedDog · 21/07/2021 16:21

Whoever has said yes to this is disgusting!

Hmm

Ignorance alert!

For starters you don’t even know where anyone is posting from.

SmallPrawnEnergy · 21/07/2021 16:22

It was 19 degrees here at 8am Confused that’s not too hot for my dog.

Also, shockingly enough people know their own dogs. A lot simply won’t cope with the humidity and lack of air especially flat faced breeds who are elderly. People don’t need berated for not walking their dog for a few days to be on the safe side especially when they understand their dogs more than gobshite strangers who always need to be a mouthpiece on dog posts. It’s not like they never walk their dog ffs.

SueSaid · 21/07/2021 16:23

I think the folk saying 'it's too hot! It's 30⁰c at 6am here!' are probably the ones who don't bother exercising their dogs when it's a bit chilly or raining either. Poor dogs and their 'brain training' shit games.

Get up early. Is it going in yet?!

Bryonyshcmyony · 21/07/2021 16:26

Tbf my dogs follow me everywhere which means I've been very saintly and not sat in the garden sun until now. We are all in the shade. Off to the beach in about an hour. Brain training makes me feel utterly depressed

LolaSmiles · 21/07/2021 16:27

What do you honestly think will happen to your dog if it goes a few days without walking?
It's like you all think they're gonna burst into flames and die if they don't get walked. They don't need walks to stay alive for fuck sake.

Here's a surprising fact for you, people are posting from lots of different places and they might just know what the temperature outside their front door is better than you.

Lonelydaisy · 21/07/2021 16:29

Why do you all think your dogs will die without a walk?
Dogs don't NEED exercise. They won't die without it for a WEEK (before anyone twists my words and turns it into me saying dogs never need exercise)

Brain training games are fine.. but people are suggesting it as if the dogs will go brain damaged from a few days with no walk.. get a grip.

Champagneforeveryone · 21/07/2021 16:29

I've just struck on the brainwave to take DDogs to work with me as I'm working nights. That way they can tootle about on my breaks and spend the day indoors catching up on their sleep.

Spanielstail · 21/07/2021 16:29

I'm doing 6am and 9pm. I have gun dog breeds so they would climb the walls without exercise.

MyMabel · 21/07/2021 16:31

No, if you walk your dog in this ridiculous you should have a dog.

Read what is being stuck out everywhere at the moment, dogs are dying after short walks because they are getting heat stroke. It can take 15 minutes for a dog to get heat stroke.

Stop walking your dogs in this weather.

I know my dogs better than you, surprisingly, and they'd get depressed without two walks a day. They are extremely fit healthy dogs that can walk for miles. We aren't walking very far, but definitely out twice a day for a squirrel check and rabbit investigation
Floralnomad · 21/07/2021 16:32

Some of these posts are ridiculous , it didn’t get to 28 here until after lunch , yesterday we had flash flooding so the grass was very wet this morning , I’ve still got a pop up lake in my garden where the new patio is going . Responsible owners know how to treat their dogs , mine is a very fit , very short haired terrier , he is perfectly happy going for a walk at 24/25* , he’s not allowed to run about and frankly it’s better for him than spending the entire day chasing around behind me asking to go for a walk .

Greenwateringcan · 21/07/2021 16:32

At 5am it was 15 degrees here. That’s not too warm for any dog.

Or get up at 5.45 and walk them like many do. There was a pleasant breeze at 6am here.
StrongArm · 21/07/2021 16:34

We walk v early but we normally do that anyway. It's fine at 6am, about 17C and the grass is full of dew so lovely and cooling.

Bryonyshcmyony · 21/07/2021 16:35

Yes my trainers got soaked this morning!

Greenwateringcan · 21/07/2021 16:35

We had mist and heavy dew too - I’m another whose feet got wet

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 21/07/2021 16:39

We are in the South, close to Bournemouth, the “Miami” of England Wink and at 6:30-7am it’s fine and we take them for a small walk. Second short walk at 9:30pm

Where do you all live, that it’s too hot even at 7am?

DinosaurDiana · 21/07/2021 16:41

I walk mine at or before 7am.
