Are you walking your dog in this heat?

Just that really. My dog is desperate for a walk, but I'm really concerned about the heat. I took him to a river yesterday so he could stay cool, but by the time we got back he had dried off and was panting.
Shall I just keep him in and stick to the hosepipe to keep him cool? He's a Labrador so not a thick shaggy coat.

My neighbour has just complained that someone shouted out their car windowsill at her walking her dog around the block about midday. It's a large German shepherd type mix. I couldn't agree with her that it was OK, just breezily suggested sticking to the shady lanes all around the estate. I think she had much better options than pavement walking, but I've never seen her take her to grassy places.

yes, around 8am then in the evening. But our dog is young and shorthaired!

Seesawmummadaw · 22/07/2021 15:35

At 6am and 10pm.

It's not even pleasant to walk when it's hot, I don't have a dog (I dog sit for a husky regularly!) and the last thing I would think is to go out for a walk in burning heat
I once walked the husky at 3am as it was the coolest time I could find Grin she was happy but very bemused

I woke up at 2.30am to go to the loo and it was lovely and cool with a breeze so I let the dogs out to have a wee and a sniff for 20 mins. Dh walked them at 7am and they were fine.

StandardPoodle · 22/07/2021 17:35

Yes, around 5am. No second walk in the heat, just let them into the garden as needed.

Loubilou09 · 22/07/2021 17:38

Yes somewhere between 5.30am and 7.00am depending on whether I ride my horse as well in the morning. If I ride horse then dogs get walked at 5.30am but if I don't ride then I am leaving it until about 7.00am and it is just still cool enough in the shade. I also walk them again at about 9.00pm. I am shocked how few people I am seeing at these times... I guess lots aren't walking their dogs which is a shame as it's lovely at those times.

@JaniieJones

'Where do you all live, that it’s too hot even at 7am?'

I'm gathering the cba dog owners haven't considered changing their routines. So, If it's 28⁰c at 1pm then that's it, no walkies! despite it being like this for days nope no chance of a 7am walk for some poor dogs, they have the fun of a 'brain game' instead..

Yes this - it's unbelievable how few dogs I see out and about at 6.00am and 10.00pm - I thought my local commons would be heaving but it is dead as a dodo. I guess a lot of people can't be arsed to change their routines to suit their dogs needs. I'd rather they didn't walk at 1.00pm though in this heat....

DP is an early riser, so our pooch gets walked early in the morning. That's it. We have a play in the afternoon in the garden with the hosepipe and she loves that.

She isn't getting a later walk atm, but she seems find with that.

We've not had her long and wasn't walked twice a day by her previous owner, so probably isn't used to it.

We are just back from a few days away with our dog. Couldn't leave him in the accommodation so had to plan our days really carefully. Cooling bandana for him (he let me borrow it for 5 mins it is amazing) plus cool mat for in car, picked woodland, shady walks, kept him on lead so he wasn't over exerting himself by running, didn't take his ball for same reason (he's still in the huff). Opted for longer lazy lunch so we were under shade at hottest part of day instead of going for big dinners. Carried water& collapsible bowl for him - I think that's what made most difference. We travelled home today and were packed and in the car by 7.30 this morning so nearly home by the time it was scorchio. It really wasn't anything onerous and it kept him safe. Now we are home he'll be walked at 6am & 8pm which is his usual routine.

Went our today very early to a reservoir to let them swim. Two older Labs. The last time they went out was two days ago at this time of night for gentle stroll.

VaggieMight · 22/07/2021 21:18

We get up early and take ours out late. I wouldn't want to walk around in this heat with a fur coat on.
