Are you walking your dog in this heat?

Just that really. My dog is desperate for a walk, but I'm really concerned about the heat. I took him to a river yesterday so he could stay cool, but by the time we got back he had dried off and was panting.
Shall I just keep him in and stick to the hosepipe to keep him cool? He's a Labrador so not a thick shaggy coat.

I’m walking 6 months old puppy at 5.30 in the morning, yesterday at 6am it was too warm. She’s settled now but yesterday and Monday she didn’t know what to do with herself. I have fans, tiled floors, shaded patio etc but she clearly doesn’t like the heat. Today’s better, she’s asleep at the moment.
I couldn’t believe there were runners with dogs out running when I drove to the village just now, poor dogs. I can only assume selfishness precedes common sense around here (car thermometer was 32° in the shade)
Puppy has run of the garden (largely in shade) but I won’t be walking her in the evening until it is much cooler.

LadyCatStark · 21/07/2021 12:43

Ours is only 4 months so he’s getting one walk around our cul-de-sac and 7pm. We’re in the north so it’s hot but not as hot as some places! He has his paddling pool in the garden and he’s been for a swim in the sea and river. Tonight, he’s coming paddleboarding for the first time!

TheCanyon · 21/07/2021 12:44

Our 7 month old lab has been getting walked at 5am and 10pm ish through dense woodlands a couple mins walk from the house. The rest of the day he potter's about the front garden (shared and cool), in the house, or the shed which has a tiled floor so it's nice and cool.

Yes I walk her before 8am

YelloYelloYello · 21/07/2021 12:46

This question came up on my Facebook the other day and so many people were saying:
“Only for a swim in the river/lake/sea.”
or
“Only in shady wooded areas.”
But (one of) the issue with this is how are you getting to these places? If you have to walk across stones or paths or roads, even briefly, to get to the grass or water then your dogs paws can burn.

If you can’t stand barefoot on that same ground for seven seconds then it’s hot enough to burn your dog.

MissJeanBrodiesprime · 21/07/2021 12:47

I take mine at 6am, back by 8am. Cooler in the mornings I find.

Xiaoxiong · 21/07/2021 12:49

@MikeWozniaksGloriousTache ours is a Romanian rescue and sounds very similar to yours, doesn't mind the heat - she pants during/after a walk but stops quickly after drinking water. She won't swim in the sea or a river either. She is actually spending a lot of the day lying in the sunniest spot on the patio Hmm

She is getting to be an old girl though, so she tells us when she's had enough of a walk and drags us home again. At the moment she is fine with a walk morning and evening and a lot of sunbathing in between.

Xiaoxiong · 21/07/2021 12:51

I've just looked outside - the whole lower part of the patio is in the shade with cool slate stone to lie on, but she is snoozing in the one bit that has full sun Confused

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 21/07/2021 12:53

I've just burned my hand on my front door handle. No way on earth would I take a dog out in daylight hours right now - it was quite nice at 5.45am, as it was around 10pm, but by 8 this morning, it was too hot.

To be honest DP was supposed to be coming out with me. I told him to stay at home, as he's likely to have keeled over by the corner of the street.

Dogs, Ageing Goths and Bald men all belong indoors in front of a fan in weather like this.

Rubyupbeat · 21/07/2021 12:55

My husband takes them out at 5am and they don't get an afternoon walk at the moment.

FlipFlops4Me · 21/07/2021 12:57

I took ours out at 6.15 a.m. but that might be it for the day. My husband is an invalid and I settle him down for bed before 9.00 p.m. and that's the earliest I'd want to take the dogs again.

stopgap · 21/07/2021 12:58

I’m in the US, where 80-90 is routine here over the summer. I walk my dogs before 9am for an hour and they’re fine.

Sexnotgender · 21/07/2021 13:01

Only when it’s under 18 degrees. I’ve either been out first thing in the morning or not at all. They’re a large breed (greyhound) and hate the heat. Thankfully they’re also lazy as fuck and don’t seem to care if they miss a walk or two.

I’m driving in a climate controlled car. The walk from house to car - car to grass is a (literal) few steps.
BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 21/07/2021 13:02

That said, I’m not walking post 8am/pre 9pm in this weather

frankie001 · 21/07/2021 13:04

Terrier walked today is shade and next to river, he was hardly on the path and sloshed his way round.

As an aside re hosepipes, please remember to not let dog have the water from it as soon as it’s turned on, as the water resting in the pipe gets really hot and needs to be hosed out to get to the cooler water. I had never thought about it before but saw a post last week.

vodkaredbullgirl · 21/07/2021 13:04

When it is cooler in the evenings. My black lab is a numpty and will go and lie in the sun, got a paddling pool up for both dogs.

Northernmum100 · 21/07/2021 13:05

Our old boy is only going out at 6.30am and then 8.30pm with access to the garden the rest of the time.
Spends his time though lazing indoors in front of a fan. I did buy a paddling pool for him because he loves a lake or a stream but won't get in it. I on the other hand have got in it.....

fuckoffImcounting · 21/07/2021 13:06

I walk my dog from 7.00-8.00 am. After that it is gentle ball games in the garden in the shade and some mental exercise. The pavements will get too darned hot for their lovely furry paws.

Flobbertybillop · 21/07/2021 13:07

I take mine out as soon as youngest has left for school, at 845. We do a funny loop which involves shade and going in the river twice.
He would hate not to go out, and would also shit in my house as will do it in the garden.

vodkaredbullgirl · 21/07/2021 13:07

I think I'm in the pool more than the dogs lol

SecretSpAD · 21/07/2021 13:07

No. Mine is an old, diabetic retriever with other health problems so he's staying put until the weather changes. He also has liquid poo issues at the moment (vet says it's the heat and apparently lots of dogs have the same thing happening this week?). He gets hot easily and dogs aren't really able to handle heat very well. To be honest in the last couple of days I've just kept him calm by doping him up on piriton and covering him with a wet towel.
He's very miserable and not eating much. Can't wait for the rain.

LemonRoses · 21/07/2021 13:08

My husband runs ours before 7am at the moment. Then she lays on the grass underneath a tree, on slate kitchen tiles or under the Shepherds hut. We take her swimming in the sea around 4:30pm for half an hour or so. She's tired out chasing waves.

Champagneforeveryone · 21/07/2021 13:08

No, and poor DDog1 is not thrilled with the current state of affairs. It's currently 30 degrees here.

I'm on a series of lates and nights and the temperatures are simply too high by the time I am able to get out. DDog1 may be ok for a short period but there's every chance DDog2 would get heatstroke or burn her paws or something equally dramatic.

I read a post somewhere that said a dog wouldn't die by not being walked, but could die from being walked, so have really stuck to that.
