‘Let’s try and keep in touch’

If someone ended their WhatsApp chat like this to you, what would you think?
What does this sentence mean to you?

LimeRedBanana · 20/07/2021 22:45

You will never see me again.

I’m guessing not what you wanted to hear.

notanothertakeaway · 20/07/2021 22:47

I'd say "let's TRY to stay in touch" = meaningless / no intention of making an effort

"Let's keep in touch" = depends on context. Ex boyfriend, being polite. Former meighbour / colleague, expect a Christmas card

Theeamonandruthshow · 20/07/2021 22:48

@LimeRedBanana Really, that strong?

OP posts:
uktrippin · 20/07/2021 22:48

Means he's going to fade you out. I'd block and move on before he gets the upper hand Grin

aiwblam · 20/07/2021 22:49

It doesn’t mean anything I don’t think

FuckingHateRats · 20/07/2021 22:49

Much more context needed!

LimeRedBanana · 20/07/2021 22:50
@LimeRedBanana Really, that strong?
Unfortunately, yes.

The words ‘…try and…’ are completely unnecessary if the intention is, actually, to stay in touch.

Mansplainee · 20/07/2021 22:51

Hmm, more context needed. It sounds quite non-committal though doesn’t it. ‘Try’ to keep in touch implies that they aren’t planning to put much effort into actually seeing you.

Theeamonandruthshow · 20/07/2021 22:51

@LimeRedBanana Yes, I thought similar

OP posts:
Theeamonandruthshow · 20/07/2021 22:52

@uktrippin It’s not a man/relationship

OP posts:
MrsToothyBitch · 20/07/2021 22:53

It means : "You will never hear from me again and I don't really want to hear from you again but it's rude to say that out loud. Hopefully my wishy washy wording will drop the hint".

LimeRedBanana · 20/07/2021 22:53
@uktrippin It’s not a man/relationship
Yes, that assumption jumped out at me. I definitely didn’t read it as a message from a man.

ParrotShoulder · 20/07/2021 22:54

Depending on the context I'd think that they were being very rude.

Theeamonandruthshow · 20/07/2021 22:55

@MrsToothyBitch Wow, really

OP posts:
Theeamonandruthshow · 20/07/2021 22:56

@ParrotShoulder Rude as in, brushing off a bit

OP posts:
EssentialHummus · 20/07/2021 22:57

Well, try to lift your hand up. Don’t do it - just try.

Lipz · 20/07/2021 22:58

To me it means ' we've not been keeping intouch/up todate, let's try harder'.

OhtheVulgarity · 20/07/2021 23:00
@LimeRedBanana Really, that strong?
Pretty much. I mean, we’re not in the days where your only options were quills and vellum and sending out a messenger — keeping in regular contact with pretty much anyone you want to, unless they live with an uncontested tribe in Amazonia, has never been easier.

OhtheVulgarity · 20/07/2021 23:01

Uncontacted tribe.

TooBigForMyBoots · 20/07/2021 23:05

Unless it has been sent by someone you got friendly with in a backpacking hostel who had to leave quickly, it means "I'm off, bye."

Did a backpacker friend send you this @Theeamonandruthshow?

Bargebill19 · 20/07/2021 23:07

That if you want to keep in touch it’s going to be very one sided with you doing all the work and no input from them.
Might as well call it a day.

Theeamonandruthshow · 20/07/2021 23:09

@EssentialHummus ?

OP posts:
LimeRedBanana · 20/07/2021 23:09

So, anyway. Why are you asking @Theeamonandruthshow?

Theeamonandruthshow · 20/07/2021 23:09

@Lipz Do you think so? So it’s a positive as in, let’s make more effort?

OP posts:
3scape · 20/07/2021 23:10

I mean if it was slightly excitable, holding onto you but having to dash off to catch a train or go to an appointment it could be literal, but also a younger adult.

I thi k someone older or post coffee or such I'd be the last rights on that friendship
