To be considering cutting our family holiday short?

We are currently in the Lake District (live in the south west).
We have three children aged 11mo, 1yo and 2yo. So far it’s awful, our 1yo is a total flight risk at the moment, the 2yo is acting incredibly difficult (which is definitely down to her routine being upset but it’s still making it very difficult) and the 11mo is being his typical baby self, but it’s much harder to accommodate him with the added stress of the older two and the holiday.

I’m not having fun, the kids kind of are but the location isn't having much of an effect on that, and they’re mad they can’t just run free like at home because it’s not enclosed, it was such a long trip to get here and we’ve only been here two days but the thought of staying until Monday makes me feel sick,

Would I be unreasonable to pack up and go home and just holiday from home? There are just as many zoos and parks a driving distance from our home that they would love all the same!

@Marmitemarinaded. I’m with you on this — hence I mentioned Mark Warner or even Butlins for the slightly less well heeled.— I think even the higher end of the French campsites Eurocamp or something similar would actually be more relaxing with more to do for very small children. Got to admit the Lakes wouldn’t be my choice with young children.

Just put in our dates for next years holiday and the cost for one night is just under what we pay for 2w

Blondes faints

It’s for the Rich lol

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/07/2021 07:29

@Babybabybabyooooh what did you do in the end

Cut down activity’s or go home

Blossomtoes · 25/07/2021 07:32

I did too @Blondeshavemorefun. It’s roughly the same as we pay for our holidays except we don’t do half or full board. It doesn’t appeal to me because it’s basically a posh holiday camp, I don’t think we’re missing much.

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/07/2021 07:55

Agree @Blossomtoes

whistlers · 25/07/2021 09:59

What you on about! It looks lovely

Blossomtoes · 25/07/2021 10:07

I’m sure it is if you like that sort of thing. I don’t.

“That sort of thing” Grin

Looks bloody lovely to me - and I don’t have kids— ok it’s not exactly in everyone’s price bracket(it’s not mine either) but I find people who poo poo this kind of thing are often the 1st booking it if they get a lottery win . It’s like someone I know who used to say she really loved living in xxxx(think dull not very attractive town) and could never live in Bath (where we lived at the time) she inherited—- next minute when the money was in she was asking me for tips on nicest bits of Bath for families. I definitely think though there are cheaper options than Sani, which would be more fun for small kids than the Lakes — and that includes something like Eurocamp or even the better accommodation at Butlins. (My kids loved it when little)

Marmitemarinaded · 25/07/2021 11:51

It’s exquisite, really special.
I’ve done all different types of holiday, and our holidays there with very young children remains…. Right up there as one of the best. I felt so relaxed and the children so happy. It was an utter indulgence - but so worth it for us.

I’d honestly even go without kids

The food, service and beach!! Sensational

Whilst we're talking naice holidays, can I recommend Bosinver in Cornwall. Its a small set of holiday cottages designed for toddlers. With a little exclusive soft play, indoor swimming pool, little walk around the farm with the "farmer" every day feeding the animals and collecting eggs.

I went on MN recommendation a few years ago and it was a lovely week.

Not In my price bracket anymore I have to say!

We don’t have small children which obviously makes a difference. No, we wouldn’t go there if we won the lottery, given that we could already afford it if we wished. We like 5* hotels in interesting places where there’s more to do than sit beside a pool. Different strokes and all that.
Marmitemarinaded · 25/07/2021 12:00

Well exactly
I made no comment about your choice
But you felt the need to describe mine as “posh holiday camp” etc

The fact people like different holidays is a given. It really doesn’t need to be said and then added that some people might “like that sort of thing” etc with an undercurrent of judgement! Grin

Blossomtoes · 25/07/2021 12:50

You don’t know what my choice is. I haven’t told you. It does look like a very expensive, upmarket holiday camp, you’re the one who’s chosen to take offence at that.

whistlers · 25/07/2021 14:00

Camp is the last thing I though of!

Marmitemarinaded · 25/07/2021 14:22

@whistlers

Camp is the last thing I though of!
I have been to camp like holidays (butlins with the children once - oh the memory! They loved though)

And trust me.

Worlds apart!

Marmitemarinaded · 25/07/2021 14:25

I remember I mentioned to reception that my baby hasn’t slept well because lighter than her room at home.

When we returned after lunch they had left two black out portable blinds in our room with a note saying to call them when we needed up and they would come and put up for us.

I hadn’t complained. Reception has said “did you sleep well Mrs XYZ?” as I was making a reservation and that’s when I mentioned. It hadn’t been a big deal, just a bit lighter than normal.

The service is phenomenal

Marmitemarinaded · 25/07/2021 14:26

Oh my son adored the watermelon at breakfast

They must have noticed

Because one afternoon we can back and there was an enormous okey of chilled watermelon in the room with a note addressed to my son saying “enjoy!”

Marmitemarinaded · 25/07/2021 14:26

If that’s like camp… sign me up!!

Holidays with babies and toddlers aren't really holidays though, are they? They are just the same old grind, without the convenience of your own home and stuff!

There's nothing wrong with admitting defeat and saying that, in hindsight, this was a bad idea.

There's also nothing wrong with knowing what battles are worth fighting, and which ones aren't.
