To ask how much you paid for your wedding make up trial?

Hi all

Have a makeup trial booked for this week and my wedding is 2 weeks away. It's a company I've used before and was also recommended by various people in the wedding world!

Today I have been told that the trial for me will be £80 and if I want my bridesmaids to have one it will be £30 each. This seems like an awful lot for the trial (almost as much as the makeup on the day!!!)

Is this usual - how much did you pay!

Nothing.

Zarene · 20/07/2021 11:38

Similar to that I think - it's a lot of work for them, especially once you factor in travel time ect (assuming they're coming to you). There's no guarantee that you'll book them for that actual wedding, so they need to make money on the trial and to put off time wasters.

Ceebeegee · 20/07/2021 11:39

£30 per person for trial

Essentialironingwater · 20/07/2021 11:39

I suppose it's similar work involved to the big day, though, isn't it, regardless of whether there is a wedding at the end?! Personally I wouldn't bother with a trial for bridesmaids, certainly not every one of them!

breadbinbaby · 20/07/2021 11:42

It wasn’t split out across the trial and on the day for me as the bride - the total package for my hair and makeup was £195 including a trial of both and then on the day. One of my bridesmaids had a hair and makeup trial that was £50, compared to £80 on the day.

valnevavaxx · 20/07/2021 11:43

I'd expect to pay basically the same as the wedding, as PP says its the same amount of work.

I wouldn't have it done for each bridesmaid though, if at all? One would be fine.

Londono · 20/07/2021 11:44

I didn't have one and it is my BIGGEST regret as my make up was way too heavy on the day and I was really upset. So pay whatever they ask for Wink

Slimmingstar · 20/07/2021 11:45

£40 for the trial and will be £40 for the day. I’m not having heavy makeup.

grealush · 20/07/2021 11:51

I paid £100 for 3 hours of her time and all her products... seems fair to me

grealush · 20/07/2021 11:51

(Generally I don't think bridesmaids have trials)

grealush · 20/07/2021 11:52

Sorry last from me Grin mine was hair AND make up. Would expect halved if just make up

traintraveller · 20/07/2021 11:52

£50 for trial and £80 on the day. I'm so glad I had a trial as although she did the make up look I asked for it was too heavy for me so she will do a much more natural look on the day. No trial offered for bridesmaids.

readysteady · 20/07/2021 12:28

I think it was £25 for the trial

TakeYourFinalPosition · 20/07/2021 12:30

I was quoted £90, but didn’t have a trial in the end, due to Covid.

squiddybear · 20/07/2021 12:37

Thanks all. This is all new to me I've only gone along with a friend before so very new to it!

OP posts:
Converse72 · 20/07/2021 12:39

I did my own make up. And seeing some friends make up disasters, I am glad I did.

For my hair, I paid £40 for the trial and £50 for the day, but this was over ten years ago now!

WellLarDeDar · 20/07/2021 13:40

I'm doing my own makeup for my wedding. I dont trust other people to touch my face and also figured I could buy myself really nice make up instead of a one off payment to an artist. I am paying for hair though and to get my eyelashes done. Oh crap well a lot of money going on my vanity!
I hope it goes well! :) £80 seems like a lot for a trial though! :S

EgSk · 20/07/2021 15:39

I didn’t have a makeup trial and regret it ! I hated my makeup on the day but it was too late to change it . If you have the budget for it, pay it !!

buckingmad · 20/07/2021 18:39

I paid £120 for my trial and £240 for wedding. Then £120 for each bridesmaid/mother of bride/mother of groom for the wedding as didn’t have trials for them.

buckingmad · 20/07/2021 18:40

Above prices was hair and makeup btw

TooWicked · 20/07/2021 18:43

Put the word “wedding” in front of anything beauty treatment related and they immediately whack ££ onto the cost.

£80 seems an awful lot to me, I think I paid £40 for a trial but it was money well spent, as I looked like a drag queen so cancelled the booking and did my own make up on the actual day.

rainyskylight · 20/07/2021 18:48

Nothing. I know my own face and what looks nice on it a lot better than a make up artist I’ve never met. Plus I didn’t want to end up looking like someone else. Instead, I gradually tested and bought some nice products. My bridesmaids also much preferred doing their own faces.

I did pay for my hair trial and on the day hair for me, my bridesmaids and mother though.

squiddybear · 20/07/2021 19:55

The only reason I'm getting someone to do it is because I am useless at makeup. I can manage foundation but that is it (even then that's very patchy!!)

Spacehairdresserandthecowboy · 20/07/2021 19:57

I paid about £100 for my first trial and I was so disappointed in what she did. Second trial was something like £45 and was a million times better.

But that does mean the trial was totally worth it as would have been gutted in the day. Didn’t have one for the bridesmaids- they just had theirs done on the day.

Spacehairdresserandthecowboy · 20/07/2021 19:58

Actually both were hair and makeup thinking about it.
