A door on an ensuite shower room is a must, right?

I was looking at house design/style magazine and came across a bedroom with only a half wall on the ensuite shower room. It looks nice but it seems so impractical! Your whole bedroom would end up steamy and damp, surely? Although I guess the window will help but I wouldn't want to open it in winter!

Discussed with friends and we are split down the middle!

I don't think there was a loo in there as well, although it didn't say there wasn't and it's possible it's not just visible in the picture.

YABU - Open plan ensuite/shower room is fine
YANBU - Ensuites need doors

Yes, essential. I don't need to hear my husband using the thunderbox at 3am.

Flyonthewall01 · 19/07/2021 21:55

The room would 100% be really damp

tallduckandhandsome · 19/07/2021 21:55

YANBU, I would hate that. Maybe ok as a novelty on holiday but not at home.

Lifeispassingby · 19/07/2021 21:57

Tbh we have a door on our en-suite and we never shut it ever

Dyrne · 19/07/2021 21:57

YANBU OP. I often think the same when I see bathtubs in bedrooms as well - do all these places have insanely good extraction or does everyone just live in dampness?

EgSk · 19/07/2021 21:58

We have an open plan en-suite . I hate it . We are getting work done on our upstairs next year and we plan to get rid of our en-suite all together since we have two other full bathrooms .

It doesn’t get steamy and it makes the bedroom smell nice after a shower . I can see the convenient side of it but I like privacy. Ours has a toilet in it too 😞

pinatastick · 19/07/2021 21:59

We once lived in a house with a sort of mini en-suite- a shower and sink, no toilet. It was through an archway, no door. It was very odd! If we had owned it I'd have made it in to a dressing room and just put a shower in the main bathroom. Not practical from a damp point of view, although we never had any issues personally.

I think there's a trend for having beautiful free standing baths in a bedroom.

LemonRoses · 19/07/2021 22:00

A bath in the bedroom is fine. A lavatory is not.

I wonder that too! I don't think it looks particularly nice either, having a great big tub 5 feet away from your bed.

We moved into our house last summer, and only noticed when we moved in that there was no door on the en suite. It caused a few laughs, why the heck would you not have a door there? Did they like to chat when one of them was on the shitter??

One year later, we still haven't got round to getting a door fitted...

iwilldoitsoon · 19/07/2021 22:03

Why is he going to shower at 3am?

TableDesk · 19/07/2021 22:04

I designed my own house and master bedroom has an ensuite, shower, bath, wc & toilet. There is also an air extraction system which works a treat for steam. Its that powerful though not noisy, even when showering the mirror doesn't even steam up. The air is recycled and pumped out to the colder areas of the house (obv not in this weather!) It is really not damp at all & needs Dusting as much as the rest of the house. It always smells fresh too & I have a blood hound sense of smell!

The way the toilet is situated, it is not visible from the bedroom. It's fondly known as a "no poo toilet" but in reality sounds or smells wouldnt be an issue with the sound proofing & extraction system.

It is a 'designed' room (sorry to sound wanky) but it's just not like 'I left the door off' if you know what I mean. I love my master suite Smile

ClayRose · 19/07/2021 22:04

Although in my defence, I've had a baby in that time and been busy. And we don't use the toilet unless the entire bedroom is empty. Although I don't usually because I still feel a little exposed.

As for the damp, we have an extraction fan and the window. Room isn't damp at all.

Googlewasmyidea1 · 19/07/2021 22:05

Thunderbox isn't a shower

LubaLuca · 19/07/2021 22:06

A thunderbox is a toilet. I think most en suites have a toilet, don't they? That wasn't the point either way; I don't want to hear him showering at 6am when I'm asleep. Does that make sense?

properg · 19/07/2021 22:06

I love a hotel room with a bath tub!

ballsdeep · 19/07/2021 22:07

I have a doorless ensuite.
It's fine!

DramaAlpaca · 19/07/2021 22:07

Friends of mine had an extension built which included adding an ensuite shower room to the main bedroom. They deliberately didn't put a door on the ensuite, just an open archway. I thought it was very weird, no privacy at all.

oP was talking about a shower? Said they didn't know if there was a loo

ChampagneWorries · 19/07/2021 22:11

We are in the process of having a loft conversion with an open plan bathroom, no doors at all

MayorGundersonsDogRufus · 19/07/2021 22:48

We stayed in a hotel that had an en-suite like this once. It was a very posh hotel, which is why we chose it... for our honeymoon! I had to make DH sit on the balcony for ten minutes each morning. I was NOT ready to share that level of intimacy with him!

Mumsnut · 19/07/2021 22:51

I an glued to Right Move most days and I can confirm that this is a trend, even with a loo present

NiceGerbil · 19/07/2021 22:54

Sink in bedroom awesome.

I had one growing up and it was very handy.

Shower bath don't get it. It's just a fashion at the moment isn't it.

Bog just wtf why why why?! Seen pics of it though.

I would not feel romantic on a weekend away with no door between DHS output. I'm sure he feels the same!

It's a no from me.

WhereDoILook · 19/07/2021 22:59

We isn't on ours. Doesn't bother me.

WeAreTheHeroes · 19/07/2021 23:04

We've recently had a door put on the ensuite as there wasn't one when we bought the house. Who wants to use a toilet that isn't private nevermind a shower or bath?
