A door on an ensuite shower room is a must, right?

I was looking at house design/style magazine and came across a bedroom with only a half wall on the ensuite shower room. It looks nice but it seems so impractical! Your whole bedroom would end up steamy and damp, surely? Although I guess the window will help but I wouldn't want to open it in winter!

Discussed with friends and we are split down the middle!

I don't think there was a loo in there as well, although it didn't say there wasn't and it's possible it's not just visible in the picture.

YABU - Open plan ensuite/shower room is fine
YANBU - Ensuites need doors

We don't have a door on ours. I don't care although we don't poo in it unless the room is empty! Never been a problem and no damp issues at all!

MaryShelley1818 · 19/07/2021 23:10

@ballsdeep

I have a doorless ensuite. It's fine!
We also have one...the bedroom is never ever damp or steamy and I'm not sure how. Obviously a good extractor fan.

We don't poo in there though! Lol

My husband and I booked the honeymoon lodge at the venue where we got married. Open plan bedroom/bathroom with a jacuzzi bath. Seemed super romantic and indeed it was, until the morning after I was sat in bed trying not to listen to him take a shit. Defo against open plan bedroom/bathrooms after that.

BrieAndChilli · 19/07/2021 23:15

I saw a house for sale recently and 1/2 of the room was carpeted and a bedroom and the other half was tiled and a bathroom- there was absolutely no dividing wall though, was very odd!

Woahbodyforrrrm · 19/07/2021 23:15

@TableDesk do you happen to know the make of your extractor? I non-steamy mirror sounds great!

iknowimcoming · 19/07/2021 23:19

First thing that comes to my mind is when I have a bug or migraine and spend half the night vomiting - my DH would love listening to that

334bu · 19/07/2021 23:20

What's the point of having a toilet if you can't poo in it?

Conchitastrawberry · 19/07/2021 23:25

We have an en-suite. It does have a door but we never shut it.

StoneofDestiny · 19/07/2021 23:32

Can't imagine having no door on a shower, but then, can't imagine having an en suite like that. To me an en suite is a totally separate room with its own window and door and nowhere near the bed.

KatherineJaneway · 19/07/2021 23:42

Smells and privacy, door definitely needed.

HPLikecraft · 19/07/2021 23:46

That lampshade in the pic is one of those paper ones from IKEA! That would "wilt" pretty quickly!

Open plan en suite? No thanks. Even if I'm not shitting I like privacy in the bath or shower.

properg · 19/07/2021 23:55

Sink in bedroom awesome.

I had one growing up and it was very handy.

I had this, so amazing as a teenager!

EmeraldShamrock · 20/07/2021 00:17

As long as its only a shower room , no toilet business.

NiceGerbil · 20/07/2021 00:20

Lol proper

I found it good for water in the morning after using it to erm get rid of excess alcohol the night before!

Chloemol · 20/07/2021 00:26

I think it’s disgusting not to have a door between bedroom and toilet

Hi, it's a Heat Recovery Ventilation (MVHR) from Beam. I also have their underfloor vacuum system when is great too. The no streamy mirrors is excellent as well as the rooms feeling 'fresh' if you know what I mean. It's also great for l filtering pollen which is currently v helpful!

I think disgusting is a little OTT Confused

I have 3 other bathrooms with doors if you feel the need for a door!

Summerfun54321 · 20/07/2021 00:48

Either a very large master bedroom with a roll top bath OR an average sized bedroom with an en-suite and a door. That pic has got the two types of bathroom all muddled up.

TreeSmuggler · 20/07/2021 00:51

Yanbu this is one of my pet hates. I've been house hunting the last year and unfortunately I can confirm that this is a trend. Just why!

Another one of my hates is the same thing in hotel rooms. It is usually in fancy hotels that are supposed to be relaxing and/or romantic. Sorry but there is nothing relaxing or romantic about seeing my DH on the bog!

JohnandMary · 20/07/2021 00:56

We live in Australia and loads of the houses built in the last 15 years are like that, including ours. The bedroom is open to the shower/bath/sink but there is a door to the toilet. It’s fine. No damp issues.

MiddlesexGirl · 20/07/2021 01:15

Smells ... noise .... privacy. All good reasons for having a door.
Reasons for not having a door? None that I can think of!

PrincessNutella · 20/07/2021 01:51

I think it is crazy not to have a door. Having said that, there used to be old-fashioned tenement apartments in New York City that had bathtubs in the kitchen.

Essentialironingwater · 20/07/2021 11:35

I sort of agree but then realised we never shut our en suite door, however ours is through our dressing room so there are in fact 2 doors between our bedroom and the bathroom (neither of which we really shut!)

Ozanj · 20/07/2021 11:38

These types of wet room style ensuites are more common in Europe and Asia, and I never found them a problem in terms of damp. In fact they often cause less damp because water is able to drain across a larger space & you don’t have to worry about water damage to the door.

Teenangels · 20/07/2021 11:42

An en-suite needs a door!
We are finally buying a house, and the en-suite has a door but a clear glass door, it will be the first thing that going to be changed, I love my partner but I don't need to see him sitting on the toilet, or washing his arse in the shower.
