Club vaccination- let down

Ikeajunkie · 19/07/2021 21:14

So, my son has followed the rules (better than most adults), but it’s now looking likely he won’t be able to go to his first concert. He’s 18 in November and has booked a concert that will happen 2 weeks after his birthday. No chance of getting vaccinated and meeting the new COVID club requirements, which is so unfair when he’s already decided to get vaccinated long before today’s announcement. The youngsters have suffered so much and it just keeps going on.

I may have misunderstood but I thought that anyone up to 3 months from their 18th birthday could now get vaccinated.

chipsandgin · 19/07/2021 21:17

The statement said that a negative lateral flow test taken within 48 hours (that is registered with the NHS) will also count so it shouldn’t be an issue.

JoveWhenHeSawMyFannysFace · 19/07/2021 21:18

Haven’t they now announced that they’ll give vaccines to people within 3 months of their 18th birthday?

ApolloandDaphne · 19/07/2021 21:19

Yes that is correct. When he is 3 months from his 18th birthday he will be eligible for the jab.
Oulidae · 19/07/2021 21:22

He can get his jabs in August/October so no real problems from what I can tell?

Ikeajunkie · 19/07/2021 21:22

Oh great, I do hope that’s correct about being able to get vaccinated 3 months before his birthday. So many rules that keep changing, fingers crossed he will get to go.

OP posts:
chipsandgin · 19/07/2021 21:23

Ah, misunderstood that - they are taking that away. The other thing I read though was that they will offer the vaccinations to those ‘on the cusp’ of turning 18. Not sure what that means but interested as DS turns 18 in December. As the rules change constantly who knows what could happen by then, baffling!

Iknowtheanswer · 19/07/2021 21:24

He'll be able to have both vaccines by then. They're moving to 3 months before they turn 18.

chipsandgin · 19/07/2021 21:24

X-post, that makes sense, so 18 year olds will be double jabbed by their birthdays. That’s something I suppose!

Ikeajunkie · 02/08/2021 12:54

Just phoned vaccination line to be told he can’t have his first vaccination until his 18th birthday.

Keep an eye on the vaccine booking site www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/coronavirus-vaccination/book-coronavirus-vaccination/ there is a message on there that says they will be updating it soon to allow those within 3 months of turning 18 to book their jab.

BoomChicka · 02/08/2021 12:59

That's frustrating OP!

And even if doesn't, you'll probably find a local walk in clinic will easily let him get jabbed within 3 months of turning 18. You don't have to book an appointment through the national booking site.
Ikeajunkie · 02/08/2021 14:30

Has caught COVID now, so can’t have his vaccination until 28 days have passed from having positive COVID test. What a pain.

Wynturphelle · 02/08/2021 14:44

I vaccinated a 17 year old on Sunday 31st - he was three months away from his 18th birthday.

Hope your son recovers quickly.

Wynturphelle · 02/08/2021 14:45

Sorry - Saturday 31st!

GnomeHat · 02/08/2021 15:14

If he has had the virus I don’t see what good a vaccine will do him.

Ikeajunkie · 02/08/2021 16:34

Because if he’s had the virus once, it doesn’t mean he can’t catch it again GnomeHat. Plus if he wants to go abroad and is over 18 and not fully vaccinated, rules might be then that he will have to quarantine on return to UK. I also asked 119 if he went to a walk in clinic to be vaccinated was that ok and was told they wouldn’t do it until he was 18!

GnomeHat · 02/08/2021 18:58

Ikeajunkie I don’t think many people are catching it twice, and evidence is mounting that the vaccines wane within a couple of months. He’ll have antibodies from the virus for longer than any protection from having had the virus itself. I’d look into it if I were you. I mean, I don’t think you would vaccinate against chicken pox if your child already had it, but you can (rarely) also get that twice. I just don’t understand why everyone is so keen to vaccinate to tick boxes even when it doesn’t benefit their or others’ health. I’m probably not articulating this very well. I’m just trying to understand. I won’t be getting vaccinated because I’ve had the virus and have been out and about for almost 18 months since and haven’t caught it again. Lots of local people have had the Delta variant but so far nobody I know has had covid twice.

GnomeHat · 02/08/2021 19:01

Sorry, I mean he’ll have natural antibodies/immunity from having had the virus lasting longer than he would have from having the vaccine, and actually from what I have read the vaccine “overwrites” natural immunity.

Cryalot2 · 02/08/2021 19:04

Sorry op. Your poor son.
Hope he isn't feeling too bad with it.
Just a long shot and don't shoot me down for suggesting it.
Any chance he might get anything by going private.

Ikeajunkie · 02/08/2021 20:10

@GnomeHat Its really the implications of COVID passports etc that is the problem, more so than catching it twice. If the government keep that double vaccinated people won’t have to isolate if coming back from abroad, or if they have been in contact with someone who has COVID, it will effect all those in the cusp of being 18.

SummaLuvin · 02/08/2021 20:13

Lots of people have lost out on things due to lockdown and the pandemic, not saying that it doesn't really suck for your son to potentially miss this concert. But the order of vaccination to minimise people actually dying, some perspective is helpful.

SummaLuvin · 02/08/2021 20:16

Also, might be obvious but no one has mentioned it, have you tried booking though NHS website? My husband struggled to get through to his GP to get his vaccine booked, and could do it very easily on there.

Ikeajunkie · 02/08/2021 20:36

@SummaLuvin my son can’t get an apprenticeship that’s local and one that he’s been offered is 30 miles away and can’t get his driving test booked because of the backlog. Due to the nature of the apprenticeship and hours, he can’t get there in public transport and I work so can’t take him. Yes people have died, I know this and know people who have, but it just seems endless for young people. If he can’t get a cancellation for a driving test before September, he will return to college and not be able to get on the apprenticeship. He spent hours calling and emailing companies to see if they will take him in as an apprentice and no luck. Yes we have perspective, but catching covid, not being easily able to get vaccinated, the concert and probable isolation if he comes back from a holiday we are trying to reschedule before Christmas really sucks. Plus until he’s double vaccinated probable isolations again. He didn’t moan when he got predicted exam results, no prom etc, I just feel for the young people.
