Can anyone shed light on these noisy cows.

For the last 28yrs I've lived next to a dairy farm but the last week has been extraordinary. The cows are just so noisy. All 80ish of them mooing their heads off from dawn to dusk but worse mid afternoon.
The noise doesn't bother me, just concerned what's up with them? Do you think it's the heat?

We had some very noisy cows recently who had been separated from each other - not their calves, but a couple had been isolated pending a TB test and they spent about a week continually calling to one another from one side of the valley to the other.

Farming is brutal, this is a consequence of humans wanting animal products. The cows will call for their young, the young want their mums. But humans wants come first. It’s dreadful.

I agree. What makes a human's whim more important than an animal's life I don't know.

This happened next to MIL's house over the weekend and it turned out the water supply in the field had broken - the cows were cross as they were hot and thirsty. She rang the farmer and he came out and fixed it straight away, volume decreased substantially!!

What always confuses me about these threads are people think it’s awful that cows have their calves taken away…

But a lot of people are more than happy to have a Gumtree puppy that’s been taken from it’s mother too early. Puppies aren’t essential, are they? Why do we breed puppies just for humans’ selfish wants?

Weaning happens with all animals, lambs, sheep, puppies, the list goes on. It isn’t any easier the longer they’re left with their mothers, either. Lambs stay with their mums for a lot longer than dairy calves ever would and it’s still a hard 24h. However, after a day or so they’re usually fine.

Weaning is also essential for the health of the mums, especially after months of feeding. They can get quite thin, even with supplemented feeding, and need that break to regain weight and rest. It takes a toll on animals if they’re pregnant for x months and feeding for x months after. They do need that break.

It’s just because we can. I honestly think I’m years to come, future generations will be appalled at the way we exploited animals in the way we do.

I have lots of footage that says otherwise. It’s far longer than ‘a day or so’ unfortunately.

Agree with this, too.

However, the reason puppies/kittens etc. are taken from their mothers (assuming fully weaned and old enough), is to go to loving homes (you would hope, anyway). And not because of the gluttony of humans, especially when there are so many other options and alternatives available.

Dairy cows have their calves removed to give access to the milk to humans. It is not about giving the mum a break.

I would be perfectly content with no breeding of any animal for human needs or wants.

Anyway, probably best not to go down that road and hijack the thread. I hope the cows seem happier soon - perhaps it is the water supply..

I think (hope) you are right

I've been over the farm and asked Grin they have a farm shop so I just walked right in. Apoarantly farmer and his family have gone away on holiday for 2 weeks (first time for 10 years) and locum farmers are managing the herd. The woman in the shop said they are really struggling though and the herd has got mixed up, they don't know which cow belongs in which group and non of them seem happy.
Guess they are just like us, wanting to go back with their own mates. Sad
Anyway good news is farmer has cut short his holiday and is coming home today. Apparently he knows which cow is friends with which. Wink

You have continuous unedited footage of the moment a dairy calf is taken away from its mother, and thereafter for the many hours, days (weeks?) you are claiming they are bothered for?

That you took yourself so can verify timescales/accuracy?

It's not just diary cows but beef cows get upset if they get moved from their mates.

They just need time to settle down and make some moo friends Grin

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 19/07/2021 16:03

Glad I drink Soya. I heard the ones near us the other night, never heard them before, it was awful Sad

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 19/07/2021 16:04

We had this at our farm down the road

Very noisy cows

We thought: calves taken away, but they were just not fed regularly

New farmer took over: happy quiet cows

Sometimes they are just not looked after that well

SupermanWithTheGreyHair · 19/07/2021 16:05

Yes. I have friends involved in animal activism. It’s amazing what they’ll do to get this footage. And I have family who have farmed (dairy), they’re honest about what happens. It’s not a nice industry.

SupermanWithTheGreyHair · 19/07/2021 16:08

Oh another slag off dairy farming thread.

Well, as a vegan I obviously don’t like it. But it is what is it. It’s not nice, so facts sound like ‘slagging it off.’🤷🏻‍♀️ The reality of dairy farming is brutal. Some people think the end justifies the means, others don’t.

MaintainingPositivity · 19/07/2021 16:08

Cows know the farmer and what should be - any change and they will make their feelings known.

Contrary to what many people would have you think the happier the cow the easier the farmer has it and looked after properly they will make the best prices.

All the farmers I know, yes I personally know them and grew up on a farm, the animals came first, before any family member and all money was/is ploughed back into the farm.

SupermanWithTheGreyHair · 19/07/2021 16:21

Of course the farmers look after them, it’s how they make their money. But for dairy farming, cows have to be impregnated to produce milk. No matter how much they are looked after, the cows have to do their job. Its brutal on their bodies and it’s a pretty miserable existence spending your life being pregnant and milked. And then killed when they are no longer productive. That’s the reality.

@MrsMackesy

I can recommend The Secret Life of Cows by Rosamund Young.
Such a beautiful book. Cows are incredible sentient beings.
