Keep feeding Ice Lollies & Jelly - Help

Hi there,

Please can someone kindly guide me. My daughter is 16 months, always has been a fussy eater and has dairy, egg, soya and melon allergies. Saying that, over the last week she has been accepting to try new foods and is enjoying food a bit more therefore eating foods I give her. however since the heatwave has started, since yesterday she has not been eating properly, but will happily have ice lolly's, fruit smoothies and jelly.

Should I be concerned and would it be bad for her to just continue having these and hope that once the weather has cooled down she will be back to eating 'normal' food?

Please help, I worry so much. Thank you

Can you make her ice lollies by buying the ice lolly things that you pour fresh fruit juice into? So they're literally frozen, sugar free fresh fruit? And maybe blend some veg into the fruit smoothie? So they're a littlr healthier (or maybe you already do this, in which case I think it's fine for a while. I don't want much else when I'm really hot to be honest!) I'm sure she'll go back to normal when it cools down. My kids have weird eating phases sometimes but always go back to norm eventually!

I’m a firm believer in eating what you fancy. It’s warm and as an adult my appetite has gone in this weather, keep giving her whatever she wants in this! She’ll be fine.

Honestly for a short period it wouldn’t bother me at all

All DS survived on yesterday was ice cream and cake

most people don't have an appetite when it's hot and sunny; it seems normal to me.

Also, maybe when you eat your dinner, give her a small portion of whatever you're eating so she's still offered normal meals/eats a little/doesn't forget about it Grin she'll be fine, don't worry. To be honest I'm thinking about having ice lollies and smoothies for dinner after reading this, sounds lush!

If it's only been since yesterday, I'd just continue to offer her other foods.

It sounds like she's craving sugar and that can sometimes be a slippery slope to go down.

If she's not hungry, just offer plenty of water and try to offer healthy foods throughout the day.

For a day or two I might not be concerned, but this heatwave is forecast for days. She can’t just consume what is basically just water and sugar for days on end. I’d be restricting the smoothies etc (obviously she could have unlimited cold water) and make sure you’re still offering her proper food as well - even if it’s cold foods.

I’d also keep an eye on her to make sure it is just heatwave and not her coming down with something. Any teething?

Could you make fruit and veg ice lollies? So broccoli and spinach with apple juice, things like that. I made lots of funny combinations for my DC when they were tiny during the hot weather and generally they proved popular.

I just hope she starts eating properly soon. She is a tiny little human and I worry because since birth has been on the 2nd percentile! maybe I'm over worrying - but I just cant help it

Would she eat slices of avocado? If it’s some out of the fridge it might be quite refreshing and it packs a punch nutrition wise

Strip her off, sit her inside an empty, plastic pool shell and offer her:

  • Frozen banana
  • Frozen berries
  • Frozen mango strips
  • Frozen any fruit basically

As a child, my mum used to cut oranges in half. Scoop out the inside and remove seeds. Puree with a stick blender and mix with gelatine (or agar agar or arrowroot). Pour the mixture back into the orange halves and let set. Then cut into small pieces. It was a delicious, jellied orange.

My little one would live off fruit if she could, but yesterday she wolfed down cooled cooked veg (broccoli, green beans, baby corn, carrots) and some tuna mayo from the fridge. I think they were still cold and refreshing for her. Could you try similar?

It really does give me the strength and reassurance that I need.

I cant give her watermelons, as she is allergic to the every melon.

As for the tuna mayo, shes allergic to eggs.

Im loving the homemade jelly idea!

Some time ago when my DD was small ,she had very little appetite .The GP said no child ever starved themselves! Maybe some cucumber slices with a little dip? Fruit smoothies and some watermelon .I have no appetite at all in this weather ,so sympathise with your LO! Please dont worry too much ,its set to be cooler with showers by the WE and she will probably be hungry again then!

For very allergic, restrictive children the advice was calories in whatever form acceptable.

Plenty of fluids (jelly,smoothies,juice) and anything else she will eat. Contact your GP if it continues.

Does she eat home made smoothies?

You'll be the expert in what she can and will eat.
(Allergic child, and autistic child, though not as restrictive as some, just not as healthy and balanced as MN would like.)

would go for watermelon also, vitamins and minerals.

also mexican gazpacho.

Tzatziki and vine leaves out of tin.

Hommous and veggie sticks to dip in ?

Vegan mayo for tuna instead, perhaps?

I wouldn't worry too much for a few days though. As long as she's drinking plenty then she'll be fine.

DS is a few months older and the same. His ice lollies aren’t sweet - just pureed and frozen versions of his usual vegetable and pasta meals but mixed with cream or greek yoghurt. Would she accept that?

DS usually likes to have two, so he gets one savoury and then a fruit based lolly (it’s just random fruit pureed with greek yoghurt and frozen).

My two done eat when it's very warm, they will have plenty of ice lollies and fluids, I don't feel like eating when it's very warm though!
I freeze those squidgy pouches and then cut the tops off them like an ice lolly they love those and at least I know they are eating some sort of food (even if it is disguised)

She'll probably be fine for a few days but she really needs some protein/fat.

One of mine has ASD/ARFID. We used to give him prescribed meal replacement shakes in an ice cream milkshake to supplement his diet. You can get them OTC in Boots etc but you will need to check the ingredients for allergens. You could use dairy/soy free ice cream. Alternatively, an ice cream milkshake made with whatever follow on milk you use and ice cream will be more nutritious than ice lollies and jelly.

My daughter is now 2 and goes through a stage like this every time a tooth is coming through. I know it will only last a couple of days so I just let her eat what she wants, it's not worth the fight and I know she will eat normally again in a few days. Luckily she only has 1 tooth to go!
