To be sick of the neighbours looking into our garden?

Background: house is rented so fence cannot be changed.

We live in a semi. Garden fence between us is a chain link about waist high across 2/3 of the garden and a wooden 6ft fence for the other 1/3 closest to the house where the patios are. NDN have a table in the garden and eat there every night in the summer. AIBU to think it’s really fucking rude that they’ve pushed the table right up against the chain link part of the fence so they are sat there looking into our garden? Why would they not have their table on the patio where the wooden part is so we both have some privacy or at least not right up against the fence?!

It’s pathetic, I know. But I just hate going into the garden in the evening as they just sit there with their endless stream of guests, and watch everything we do. It’s just so awkward.

I'd tape black bags to the fence they'll get the message and will cost a £1.

VerticalHorizon · 19/07/2021 20:20

Umbrellas are a fantastic option.
As long as you do not open them up, they will make excellent javelin substitutes.

TheWelshposter · 19/07/2021 20:27

I would HATE this, I like my privacy and wouldn't want to make small talk every time I go into my garden.
You need a giant trampoline, strategically placed. Not too close so that they can complain, but enough to block their view in.

neveradullmoment99 · 19/07/2021 20:28

Do the same back! Put your table right so it faces their garden. Make a point of inviting friends with noisy chldren. They will soon move it.

neveradullmoment99 · 19/07/2021 20:29

Oh you need to go out there for about a week or so, invading their privacy. I am sure they will not like it.

LittleMissnotLittleMrs · 19/07/2021 20:44

Why has no-one complained??? @Wannakisstheteacher WHERE IS YOUR DIAGRAM?

ClemDanFango · 19/07/2021 20:46

I’d be a total cunt about this and park my own table and chairs directly next to theirs and sit there and stare at them.

So I’ve put on my big girl pants and sent DS out to play basketball as soon as they sat down to eat 😁 30 minutes of constant bouncing and they’ve gone indoors for the first time before 10pm since it stopped raining.

Cable tie some of the willow fencing to the chain link, job done it’s not permanent and they’ll get the idea
Prestige Wicker Willow Fence, Brown www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01ND433X4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_5Q61ADRP9PHGQ5QN2R88?psc=1&_encoding=UTF8&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

BlackeyedSusan · 19/07/2021 21:17

Go out and stand next to the fence and comment on what they are eating.

Ilovegardens · 19/07/2021 21:44

You can get those nice rectangular planters with trellis attached. They can be several feet wide and are a good height, put one at a right angle to their fence and get some shrubs and climbers.

RandomMess · 19/07/2021 22:03

😂

Love the basket ball solution!

billy1966 · 19/07/2021 22:04

@Tiredwiththeshitsired
I think that is a perfect solution.

Big tilting garden parasol to obscure their view?

this

30degreesandmeltinghere · 19/07/2021 22:31

You could practice your David Attenborough voice and narrate their meal.

"And here we have a fresh cauliflower in it's favourite habitat - cheese sauce..."

Fluffmum · 19/07/2021 23:25

Put up fake plant trellis from home bargains. Really cheap and private

Owl55 · 20/07/2021 00:57

A gazebo that blocks them seeing into your garden and you can use too

Crystal8559 · 20/07/2021 01:40

We got these from IKEA, you can still see through them. A little bit of assemble is required but after the first one it was easy. They are smart and tidy looking, and you could put some plants in front of them, we have laurels which grew fairly quickly. they are sturdy and come with fixings to hammer in to keep them from blowing over and you can fasten them together if needed, but they can be removed so your LL shouldn’t mind, it won’t totally block your site of them but there will be something there to make you feel more comfortable. There are others that are more solid if you search folding garden screens on the internet. Also seen that you can buy trellis with faux climbers on them and that looks like better coverage, I know how you feel. Good luck op!

This would definitely get the obnoxious HipHop and horrendous drum and bass music treatment. If they were lucky I’d throw in a bit of dub reggae and repetitive house. Watch them move to another part of the garden as far from you as possible

1forAll74 · 20/07/2021 03:12

Why do you think the people watch you all the time. I would have thought the neighbours and their guests, would have been eating/drinking,and all chatting together, and otherwise occupied, and not staring at you all the time.
