what in fresh hell are these creatures? Old window, cleared 35 of them yesterday. Back in to room today and there's another 19 of the bastards. They seem a bit dim too, try to fly and fail, land on their backs and flail around. Have googled but can't quite match them. Apologies for the huge bug shadow in the pic, but they are about 3mm long. Aibu to ask if anyone knows what they are and how on earth I get rid?

I can't quite tell from the picture, but is it some sort of weevil?
Recent experience here - don't ask.

3scape · 18/07/2021 20:00

Carpet beetle? I'm not sure if they fly

reannneeee · 18/07/2021 20:01

Deffo looks weevilish

lovelylittlesunflower · 18/07/2021 20:02

Woodworm

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 18/07/2021 20:02

A stupid bug? Roughly the size of the top joint of your finger (males have great big feathery antennae like laminated eyebrows)?

Probably Cockchafers.

Triphazards · 18/07/2021 20:04

@lovelylittlesunflower

Woodworm
Yes, if the blurry picture is of one of these.

[Hit Ctrl+Enter too quickly]

If smaller and you have somebody in the house who likes eating sandwiches in their bedroom, more likely mealy bugs, though.

Vacuum everything, including the gap under skirting boards, use a steam cleaner and never have food upstairs again.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 18/07/2021 20:09

Summer or cock chafer?

KnackeredHag · 18/07/2021 20:13

Oh Christ. Weevils? Cockchafers? Beetles, worms and mealy bugs?! I literally clean ALL the time. It's a sitting room, not used very often, but still clean. Ugh. Gross. Off to scrub again!

OhGiveUp · 18/07/2021 20:13

Looks like a black clock. They're usually out and about at around this time of the year. They can only fly for a couple of weeks when they're young.
Perfectly harmless.

PrincessNutella · 18/07/2021 20:14

Might as well burn the house down just to be safe.

Valhalla17 · 18/07/2021 20:16

They are carpet beetles. You need a carpet beetle spray (get it from amazon) and to clean all fabrics/ hoover. You need to get right into the skirting boards. This cleaning needs to be done every couple of days to get on top of it and then reduce once they stop appearing. If you have clothes etc in that room you need to hot wash them to kill the eggs...

coogee · 18/07/2021 20:17

Summer or cock chafer?

That sounds like the male equivalent of chub rub.

fishonabicycle · 18/07/2021 20:20

It's definitely not a cockchafer. They are huge (about 2-3 cm long)

MeadowLines · 18/07/2021 20:30

Harnless little things wearing boots. Def not a chafer as theyre way bigger than 3mm!

Id be frustrated with that many of them daily though. Maybe get a clearer picture for a proper ID then you can get better info on how best to deal with them

Ethelfromnumber73 · 18/07/2021 20:31

Woodworm. They fly towards the window and then die there.

Rhinothunder · 18/07/2021 20:33

Is there an app for these things? Like there is for plants?

TheVolturi · 18/07/2021 20:41

Could they not be woodlice?

Hankunamatata · 18/07/2021 20:47

Look a bit big to be carpet beetles and too small to be wood lice

KnackeredHag · 18/07/2021 20:48

@Rhinothunder there is, I downloaded it, uploaded three pics and it came up with three different bugs. I think it might be wood worm beetles. Just been outside and the wood is rotting. @TheVolturi not unless woodlice can suddenly grow wings and fly (albeit a rubbish attempt at flight)

KnackeredHag · 18/07/2021 20:50

@coogee Grin I thought similar, that made me giggle

OP posts:
Hankunamatata · 18/07/2021 20:51

It does look like wood worm

CarrieMoonbeams · 18/07/2021 20:54

Aww, I think it's quite cute - look at its wee feets 😍! (well, no, I wouldn't want an army of them in my house either!)

I'd have guessed weevil, but as others have said, maybe a better picture would help, some people here are very knowledgeable.

Hope it doesn't kick you to bits in the meantime though!

chillychills · 18/07/2021 20:55

This link might help if it is a carpet beetle www.nhm.ac.uk/take-part/identify-nature/common-insect-pest-species-in-homes/carpet-beetles-identification-guide.html

CarrieMoonbeams · 18/07/2021 20:56
