what in fresh hell are these creatures? Old window, cleared 35 of them yesterday. Back in to room today and there's another 19 of the bastards. They seem a bit dim too, try to fly and fail, land on their backs and flail around. Have googled but can't quite match them. Apologies for the huge bug shadow in the pic, but they are about 3mm long. Aibu to ask if anyone knows what they are and how on earth I get rid?

Deathwatch beetle? Though 3mm, maybe too small. I'm thinking as found in timber of old window.

I wish I’d never read this thread. It’s making me itch 🙈

DogInATent · 18/07/2021 21:01

I don't think it's a stink bug, but have a look at pictures online to be sure.

JustFrigginNameChange · 18/07/2021 21:04

Biscuit beetles. I have had hundreds of them. They bred in my pantry on some spilt food stuffs. I found them in my corn flour, curry powder, golden syrup… everywhere

NakedAttraction · 18/07/2021 21:08

A cockchafer is a real thing?

beigebrownblue · 18/07/2021 21:09

I thought they might be vine weevils. Vine weevils don't fly they crawl.

landofgiants · 18/07/2021 21:12

I'd say woodworm, too.

TheFoundations · 18/07/2021 21:14

@CarrieMoonbeams

I think it's got cute feets too.

To everyone else: A woodworm isn't a worm??

JamMakingWannaBe · 18/07/2021 21:14

Have you seen any piles of sawdust around the room - from wood furniture or beams etc? This was the first symptom I noticed of woodworm.

SilverBirchWithout · 18/07/2021 21:16

Woodworm doesn’t usually survive in centrally heated homes.

BertieBotts · 18/07/2021 21:17

It's definitely not a stink bug or cockchafer - much too small.

Could be a carpet beetle. I don't know what the adults look like but the larvae are disgusting and we get them every so often Hmm they're totally harmless, but always creep me out because they look a bit like bedbugs and live in bedding that hasn't been aired/washed properly.

EadnothTheStaller · 18/07/2021 21:21

You'd know if it was a cockchafer, they fly fairly well and make a hell of a racket whilst they're doing it.

Concestor · 18/07/2021 21:21

It's not a cockchafer or carpet beetle. Woodworm looks most likely based on what others have posted.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 18/07/2021 21:24

Have you got an Android phone?
It looks like one of those critters that do the working inside, has hit out.

@coogee

Summer or cock chafer?

That sounds like the male equivalent of chub rub.

🤣🤣

ImbarbaraB · 18/07/2021 21:29

We have these that come out this time of year

It was woodworm

Our house had previously been left unoccupied before we bought it with leaky pipes resulting in sodden flooring and joists

Any rotten ones were replaced abs everything has since dried but we get a few woodwork appearing now 5 years on

This year has been the least, I’ve only seen one so far

First 2 years it was many

That's not a carpet beetle, they are like small black ladybirds and you tend to see them in spring rather than summer
