To not want to go to London?

MoonlightFancy · 18/07/2021 10:55

Day trip booked for London for a special occasion this week. I don't want to go with cases rising. Husband and I are double jabbed but I'm still really concerned. Friends say it's fine and we should all go and stop panicking. AIBU to feel so anxious?

On the tube in London today. Busy enough to be honest- standing room only on the Victoria line and about 40% of people either unmasked or mask not covering either nose or mouth.

FizzyPink · 18/07/2021 15:31

I live in London and have been going in for dinners/days out/work etc for months now. It’s perfectly safe and as far as I’m aware I haven’t caught covid.
Honestly, in real life I don’t know anyone who is nearly as concerned as the people on this board seem to be

MurielSpriggs · 18/07/2021 15:36

YANBU - if you feel anxious you won't enjoy it.

(And if you're asking whether feeling anxious is reasonable then the question doesn't really make sense. Anxiety is not a rational feeling.)

Dozer · 18/07/2021 15:38

Avoidance rarely improves anxiety IME

Cowbells · 18/07/2021 15:41

Stick to the open air. There are gorgeous parks, boat rides, outdoor eating and drinking everywhere. Walk through central London rather than catching the tube or bus for short journeys. Everyone should be masked on TFL journeys and there are hand sanitisers at every shop doorway. Avoid rush hour public transport. You are likely to be absolutely fine.

Lots of places are incredibly quiet. Friends told me they had the entire British Museum to themselves last week.

BillyShears · 18/07/2021 15:42

I live in London. Actually think it’s less bad here than in other areas. Friends in the NW and SW reporting far worse than us (all teachers). So depending on where you’re from it might be better down here.

GrandDuchessRomanov · 18/07/2021 15:42

DH and I will be taking our 4 Dnephew next week for an over night stay, his first time in London. He is 14 and couldn't be more excited.

Having had his DB suddenly drop dead at the same age, we as a family firmly believe that life is for the living.

I reckon the odds of getting hit by a big red bus are higher than contracting and dying of covid.

I completely agree!

I also live and work in London, and it's fine, really quiet. I use the tube and buses and have never felt bothered. Depending which mainline station you're coming into, you could get a cab or walk to the Tower.

blueshoes · 18/07/2021 16:23

There is no better time to visit London. Fewer crowds.

Youdiditanyway · 18/07/2021 16:24

Cases are rising across the country, unsure why you specifically want to avoid London. There’s about 800 per 100,000 across my local council. We can’t hide away forever, it just isn’t feasible. You’ve had your vaccines so it’s time to live again.

Macncheeseballs · 18/07/2021 17:04

Nowhere is 'perfectly safe'

OlympicProcrastinator · 18/07/2021 17:06

What if cases rise forever. As in, as soon as they go down, a new variant comes along and they go up again. And it happens every few months forever and Covid never goes away. I think that’s a possibility. If that’s the case when / what would make you take the risk? What would make you feel better?

I do get that cases are rising but the risk will always be there. YANBU to not feel ready though so only go if you think you can relax enough to enjoy it.

My DD has to go for work next week and the week after. She's not yet 18 so hasn't had the vaccine. She'll have to travel on public transport at peak times to get there and is planning to use the tube once there. I'm feeling worried about her as she has enough other issues going on without Covid. Any advice or reassurance?
Lots of under 18s have to travel around London either to go to work or school and they seem to be doing OK!

I'm sure your daughter will be be fine.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 18/07/2021 17:44

I'm going this week We have an early morning appointment so need to stay overnight before. I've been dreading it. But we'll avoid the buses and tube and are still going to hit a couple of attractions as Dd's never been before. All double jabbed except Dd (too young) We'll be using masks still even though it's after freedom day and lots of hand sanitizer.
It's supposed to be hot, so hopping everyone has gone south to the beach and the streets are practically empty.
Good luck OP.

pastaislife · 18/07/2021 17:48

What day are you going? I’ve personally found weekdays super quiet (no one really going back to the office full time yet) and weekends busy (everyone back to socialising)

That is rubbish. After work in Central London the shopping and tourist areas are heaving
UnaOfStormhold · 18/07/2021 21:18

Travelling by boat to Tower pier might be a good option - an interesting trip on its own and there's plenty of fresh air on deck.

MrsSkylerWhite · 18/07/2021 21:20

All friends who live in central London say it’s still eerily quiet.
A few days booked with youngest, once he’s double jabbed. Can’t wait.

SlothinSpirit · 18/07/2021 21:53

YANBU to be concerned but we're in this for the long-haul so you do need to decide how much you're going to limit your life for the next few years because of your fear of Covid.

Cowbells · 19/07/2021 17:13

I've used public transport often in London recently and it is way less crowded than usual. Never had a stranger sit anywhere near me.

MoonlightFancy · 20/07/2021 16:05

Well, we went! Had a lovely day. Anxiety eased somewhat on arrival, kept our masks on at all times and sanitised regularly. Appreciate all the comments and support.

I'm on my way home from London today too OP. Its got a bit of bustle back, shame I was down for work. Really great to see people out and about in the CBD again.

beethecrackon24995 · 20/07/2021 16:37

I've literally just back from having gone with dd. Had a lovely time. Tube not busy. Most people wearing masks young and old on both tube and in stores. We found that everywhere we went didn't seem busy so plenty of space (Selfridges, liberty's & Marylebone road)

So glad you enjoyed it Smile

Was it quieter than a typical July day?
