To ask what's the least realistic depiction of your job in a film, tv show or book?

I'm always watching things and thinking 'I bet that job isn't like that.' People in my job on tv are always dim, well dressed (immaculate hair, nails, shoes) and never look stressed which is very unrealistic! They do all seem to have 'ie' or 'y' ending names which to be honest is pretty accurate Grin

Line of Duty... it's really not that exciting! And everyone looks like Hastings Grin

AlCalavicci · 17/07/2021 18:09

Almost all programs that have a bar / pub in them depict the bar staff as either Man / woman haters or will jump on anything with a pulse.

Soaps are particular bad at making it look like bar staff wipe the same bit of bar all the time but never anywhere else .

Other customers help out if someone is getting stroppy , nope they are suddenly very interested it their phone / news paper / pint

They give away free drinks to mates

kicking out time everyone goes without making a fuss

People rarely finish there drinks

I could go on for quite a while here !

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 17/07/2021 18:13

Not a career as such, but I home educate.. you can pretty much guarantee anyone home schooling in a movie / TV show is psychopathic, fundamentally religious, abusive, or all of the above. Most of us are actually pretty normal!

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 17/07/2021 18:16

Admin for a dinosaur park. Honestly they hardly ever escape and eat people. Maybe 2 or 3 a year tops. And raptors can be quite cuddly so long as they don’t get hungry.

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 17/07/2021 18:18

I can’t think of an example of my actual job being portrayed on tv.

Disneyblue · 17/07/2021 18:29

Teachers are depicted all wrong. That advert that shows the teacher leaving at the same time as the kids, for example. I laugh at that. And it's advertising going into teaching!

Angrymum22 · 17/07/2021 18:33

@Cheeseismymiddlename

My job is either portrayed in a very sadistic way to give people nightmares or a hilarious sit come type way with loads of canned laughter . Neither happen. Ever.
You must have the same job as me.
herethereandeverywhere · 17/07/2021 18:40

Surely @Thelnebriati is a dog trainer?!

FrangipaniBlue · 17/07/2021 18:46

My job never appears in movies, if it did half the disastrous stuff would either a) never happen or b) be dealt with without fuss.

It'd be a pretty boring movie Grin

(I work in risk management)

Chisandbiscuits · 17/07/2021 19:03

Accountants. Either very, very boring or totally dodgy and telling clients how to evade tax - which gives everyone the idea that if you find the right accountant you won't have to pay any tax at all. In reality, money laundering regulations are extremely strict and I spend a lot of time telling people they can't put their new en suite bathroom through as a business expense even if their mate Dave down the pub says he has an accountant that would let him.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 17/07/2021 19:03

My former colleagues and I used to suggest we could sell stories to Waterloo Road but they would be rejected for being too far fetched...

Every teacher in film and TV only ever works with students who eventually 'get it' and show gratitude. Yes, some do. Others...no chance.

Minesril · 17/07/2021 19:06

I don't think I've ever seen exam publishing depicted on tv...

LucyCC · 17/07/2021 19:17

The film The Accountant isn’t huuuugely representative of my job. Or that of any of the many accountants that I know .

Lessthanaballpark · 17/07/2021 19:21

Teaching is always depicted as being a lot easier than it actually is. Like it’s a soft job that the female character chooses because she loves kids and can be around for her family!

ThroughThinkandThing · 17/07/2021 19:22

Every teacher on Glee - massive safeguarding fails all round.

Graphista · 17/07/2021 19:25

As per pps anything medical is usually a load of bollocks! From basics like backwards/upside down x-rays to the amazing success cpr has on screen to mangling of medical terminology to having the time and energy to conduct affairs - generally having time to pee is a bonus! I mainly worked in elderly care and a particular bug bear is how all elderly patients/clients are "sweet old dears" cos they never fling pots of pee or launch a zimmer or crutch at carers/hcps or call them sexist/racist epithets, tell them to fuck off every 5 mins... ohhh no! Ditto their families and other visitors who can be even worse.

The closest I saw accuracy wise was Jo Brands "getting on" but even that was tempered and somewhat outdated. Admittedly only saw a few episodes

DH is Army. They are always depicted running around fields with rifles or in trucks etc. Always dirty and with cam cream.

Reality... he rarely leaves the office. If it does, its to go to meetings in other offices.

Yep my dad and ex were both army as are many of my relatives. Depends on the role of course but generally mostly office based excepting exercises.

Faulty Towers comes pretty close to some of the hotels i have worked in ditto!

Wbeezer · 17/07/2021 19:40

Well DH and i are both artists but we don't behave like members of the Bloomsbury Set, frankly our life is quite boring because what with work, kids, chores we don't have time for Bohemian excess.

SquashMinusIsShit · 17/07/2021 20:36

I'd love to know if Scandal is anything like the actual White House, if the political fixers, secret spy units etc are even based loosely on fact Grin

ADragonCalledKeith · 17/07/2021 20:58

Watch any of the CSI's! I'd LOVE for my job to be like that!

There's zero chance any of them are trained in every forensic discipline and able to maintain competency in all of them with the number of cases needed for accreditation! Grr!
Specialise people!!!

The3Ls · 17/07/2021 21:01

The King's speech lol

JaniceBattersby · 17/07/2021 21:02

I’m a reporter. I’ve never once seen a realistic depiction of my job on any drama. In 20 years on the job
I’ve never once been involved in any kind of ‘media scrum’ or shafted anyone for kicks.

There was once a little speech by the newspaper editor in Broadchurch that came slightly close to describing the plight of local newspapers.

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 17/07/2021 21:08

Ally McBeal - yes, I know it was American, yes I know it was part comedy - but come on.

ButYouJustPointedToAIIOfMe · 17/07/2021 21:12

Teaching. Dangerous minds. Kids don't respond that well when a white woman starts spouting rap lyrics, whether Eminem or Tupak.

Graphista · 17/07/2021 21:33

@JaniceBattersby genuinely interested in your opinion regarding the current problems in the msm and even at a local level with no or very few voices criticising the govt getting an airing just now? I find it utterly terrifying! I don't think that the problem is at journalist/reporter level but that any journalists/reporters who even err slightly towards not being supportive of the current leadership are struggling to get employment/contracts at the moment, let alone actual access to those in power.
