I'm always watching things and thinking 'I bet that job isn't like that.' People in my job on tv are always dim, well dressed (immaculate hair, nails, shoes) and never look stressed which is very unrealistic! They do all seem to have 'ie' or 'y' ending names which to be honest is pretty accurate Grin

My retired medic parents always complain about medical drama s, mainly the fact that patients are invariably "brought back from the dead" by CPR etc. when it's very rare for this to be successful IRL (at least it was in their day, I think it's a bit better now).
Doesn't seem to stop them watching though, i think they enjoy finding fault.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 17/07/2021 12:04

I’m a nanny, so Mary Bleeding Poppins.

I HATE when on advertising a role parents say ‘looking for our Mary Poppins!’

Honestly. She used magic and drugs.

cockeyedoptimist · 17/07/2021 12:09

Early years teacher here
I’m thinking Kindergarten Cop would be fairly unlikely happen

Chicchicchicchiclana · 17/07/2021 12:11

I had a job similar to Bridget Jones. Lol at being able to afford that Borough Market flat on that level of salary, even in the 1990s. Absolutely impossible.

fiftiesmum · 17/07/2021 12:15

White coats, male.

CandyLeBonBon · 17/07/2021 12:18

Depictions of my job are always played by sleazy men who don't hold their equipment right snd point things in the wrong direction!

ShippingNews · 17/07/2021 12:20

Carry On Nurse.

Merryoldgoat · 17/07/2021 12:21

@pleasedonttextmyman

Oh I’m sure it’s included incidentally but very much a background.

‘Bollocks’ said the school finance manager, ‘who’s gong to do the billing of you leave?’

Not the stuff of entertainment.

DappledThings · 17/07/2021 12:25

There us a film called Admission in which the entire database for the university's admissions process is just one Excel spreadsheet with names and offer or reject on it

@whereislittleroo

I don't think I've ever seen my job portrayed accurately. I'm in mental health.

Same

Spottyphonecase · 17/07/2021 12:39

I work in a safegaurding role at a school. In programmes like Ackley Bridge, teachers just pop around students homes, pick them up in the car on an evening, take them to the doctors and so on. That would never happen in real life.

OhWhyNot · 17/07/2021 12:41

I used to work as a therapist. I never sat down in a client session with a pen and paper to jot things down

OhWhyNot · 17/07/2021 12:43

Agee I work in mh unit

Very different to how it’s ever portrayed it wouldn’t make very good tv

GameofPhones · 17/07/2021 12:51

'Educating Rita' film - so unrealistic. Frequent one-to-one meetings rarely happen even in Open University set-ups.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 17/07/2021 12:55

GoddamnCars · 17/07/2021 13:01

If anyone has ever portrayed an occupational therapist in a film outside of the basket-weaving type circa WW2, I have yet to see it.

AluckyEllie · 17/07/2021 13:02

Nurse here- never short staffed. Always running around glamorously after a doctor and hanging off their every word.
They never show you persuading the dementia patient to put some pants on or trying to give a 25 stone patient a bed bath.

toffeeghirl · 17/07/2021 13:23

Everyone on tv live in massive houses disproportionate to occupation and income.*

*if not in a massive house or apartment they live on a slum estate with burned out cars, rubbish and graffiti. There's never anybody (outside of Coronation Street) living in a regular terrace.

Speaking of Coronation Street. I've never worked at a GP practice. However, I know getting a same day appointment, home appointment, or even a quick home visit to see how someone is doing is laughable.

Thelnebriati · 17/07/2021 13:32

Every woman doing my old job is large, enthusiastic, dressed in tweed or outdoor clothing, lacks people skills, and has a booming jolly hockey sticks voice.
Its not that wrong tbh.

Wrotten · 17/07/2021 13:33

@COL1N

Yes! My life is spent looking at spreadsheets.

It's a real shame I lied on my CV about how much I can do in Excel...

Outhere · 17/07/2021 13:42

Social Worker. Nope. Never seen anything remotely like what I actually do. We have a bad enough reputation as it is without such poor depictions of us on screen. Sorry OP, that didn't answer your q at all!

CastawayQueen · 17/07/2021 13:44

Anything hacking/computer.
People furiously tapping on keyboard and then boom - their in + cool graphics on screen.
In truth it’s type to run something. Go for cofeee while it runs. Come back and trawl through huge log file.
Realise you needed to run something else. Start it and go for another coffee
And repeat 😂

Also no you cannot just hack into something and get all that data in readable form 😂 by pressing one button

Littlecaf · 17/07/2021 13:47

Indian Jones and Lara Croft Confused are the closest…..crossed between Mark from Parks and Rec.

Parks and Rec is actually fairly accurate…..
