Anyone else just sick to death of hayfever

June and July every year is the same. People think it’s just a mild irritation, but it’s debilitating yet doesn’t warrant being absent from work.
Even strong tablets do nothing for me. My nose is full of burst blood vessels, and it’s either completely blocked or running like crazy.

10 violent and loud sneezes in a row.
It makes me very bloated too for some reason. Face is all red and puffy, don’t want to be seen in public by anyone I know.
I have quite a severe case, I’ve had this since the start of June and it’s still bothering me now.
Is there any sort of miracle out there?
It affects my sleep, work, socialising etc. It sounds dramatic but I can’t cope with it anymore.

I'm sat here with tissue stuffed up my nose. I've been so miserable today: sweaty with the heat and really itchy. My hay fever today has been one of the worse days this year. All my skin itches everywhere. I've tried every suggestion to help and nothing does.

Kitten189 · 17/07/2021 00:10

Agreed, today’s been terrible for some reason. Sorry to hear you’re going through it too.

Me too. Never had it before and I am 66. Have been suffering lately.

Only ever had hay fever bad once before and that was when I was 10. This year I'm suffering like mad with it. At first I thought it was the fibres off my face masks that were irritating the back of my nose and throat, but 2 weeks of not wearing one whilst I was at home self isolating made me realise it wasn't that at all. I'm having to double dose myself daily on tablets

RubyGoat · 17/07/2021 00:30

This year is horrendous. I've been on 30mg/day of cetirizine for the past year or so, at the suggestion of my GP. However it's not cutting it this year so they've just put me on fexofenadine. Slightly better. I've just ordered a neti pot as well. I used to have one, really helpful but I lost it in a house move.

workworkworkugh · 17/07/2021 00:30

Yes to everything you've said @Kitten189
It can be so debilitating but I think my work would laugh if I said I couldn't come in due to hayfever! Also the bloating thing, I think because I'm breathing differently; different pattern, more deeply etc that causes it.

I once had hayfever every second day for a month in the middle of winter Confused I went to the doctors and nearly cried I was so over it. He gave me a prescription for some extra strength nose spray (I can't remember what it was called sorry!) and that seemed to help quite a bit.

InterruptedMango · 17/07/2021 00:31

I have thought for a while now that it has been particularly nasty this year. Glad I’m not the only one!

violetbunny · 17/07/2021 00:48

Have you seen a GP about it?
I also find nasal sprays help but don't work immediately so I use them daily throughout summer.

If you have a dryer, drying for bedding, towels and clothing inside may help. Line drying outside will collect pollen on everything.
Keep windows shut when the pollen count is high.

NotJustfriends · 17/07/2021 00:50

This year is particularly bad for it. Pharmacies and supermarkets near me have ran out of alot of the standard meds. Hugs op

Ifonlyidknownthen · 17/07/2021 00:51

Dymista nasal spray has turned my life about this year, ask your gp for it

Cabinfever10 · 17/07/2021 01:01

I feel your pain. I'm using a combination of sodium cromate(sp) eye drops, beconase nasil spray, fexofenadine and piriton (all prescribed by a dr) and I can mostly breathe through my nose and keep the hives I get at bay as long as I don't miss a dose (piriton is every 4-6 hours😪) I still can't smell or taste anything (not covid) and won't be able to until September/October. I know last year the pollen levels were bad but I swear it's worse this year

estornudar · 17/07/2021 01:35

Mine has been horrendous this year. Definitely going for the steroid injection next year; so many people I know say how much it has helped.

Dancingonmoonlight · 17/07/2021 01:52

I'm finding it particularly bad this year too and it feels like it has been bad for a long time. I go out with a couple of packs of tissues and return with pockets bulging full of tissues. Trying to blow my nose with a mask on is not fun.

I was embarrassed today because DC was doing something today and lost. My eyes were streaming and it looked like I was crying because DC lost. It was embarrassing.
I use tablets and nasal spray. I haven't found anything that helps other than showering after coming in and keeping the windows tightly shut. Not fun in the heat.

Dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 17/07/2021 02:15

This year has been awful for that gritty eye feeling. I don't take anything though.

MrsRockAndRoll · 17/07/2021 05:53

Agree. It's so warm that I constantly need to choose between hayfever with windows open or overhead with windows closed

FirmlyRooted · 17/07/2021 07:18

What are people using for the gritty eye thing? I don't usually suffer but my eyes are so gritty and itchy I cant take it anymore, heading to the pharmacy as soon as they open

Brokenrecord3006 · 17/07/2021 07:29

Mine is driving me nuts, it makes me lose my temper really easily because it's difficult to deal with normal things when you want to scratch your face off.

What pisses me off the most is the advice to stay indoors and keep windows closed. SOD OFF. I want to enjoy the summer and my house is like an oven already. I've been recommended Sterimar, does that work for anyone else?

LakieLady · 17/07/2021 07:29

Sodium cromoglycate eye drops are good, brand name Opticrom, but Boots own brand is cheaper.

I don't normally suffer too badly in the summer (I'm more allergic to tree pollen and fungal spores than grass pollen, so spring and autumn are generally worse) but this year it's awful. It's given me sinusitis, too.

My garden desperately needs a lot of attention, but I can't spend more than half an hour out there before I have to come in.

MissChanandlerBong22 · 17/07/2021 07:42

Not me, but my DH. He suffers terribly and it’s genuinely debilitating.

I didn’t realise a GP could help. Ours has a notice on their website basically saying don’t call us about hayfever, go and see a pharmacist. He just use Piriton and Beconase but they don’t cut it.

Nonbio46 · 17/07/2021 07:51

Have you spoken to your GP? A few years ago my hay fever was driving me mad and I was so desperate I went to see my doctor. He prescribed a nasal spray called Avamys and it’s really helped. No more itchy ears and throat or sneezing. I still sometimes get itchy eyes but I use Opticrom eye drops which I keep in the fridge and they really help. Good luck OP it’s a bloody miserable thing to be suffering with. Xx

FirmlyRooted · 17/07/2021 07:54

Thank you @LakieLady

RobinPenguins · 17/07/2021 07:55

I feel like I say this every year but this year seems worse than ever. I’ve been taking fexofenadine for 2 months and that had been keeping it at bay ok until this week. Really struggling now. I’ve barely been going outside and it makes me so grumpy and tired as well as the incessant sneezing and eyes watering.

sandgrown · 17/07/2021 07:57

I bought local honey for DS to try. Not sure if it’s helping but it tastes good! A work colleague recommends taking bee pollen tablets for a few months before the hay fever season starts .

I didn’t bother with the GP as mine say the same, so used an online pharmacy to get the slightly stronger stuff.
