Chris Whitty suggesting that another lockdown could be on the cards, after all this ‘irreversible’ talk.

Once again, Manchester has pretty much the highest rate of infection.

Masks still to be kept as compulsory by many establishments like Sainsbury’s, in medical centres and likely on public transport too.

Cases are at their highest in months, hospitalisations and deaths are on the increase too.

I feel like it’s last summer all over again. Things will continue to rise and then rule of six and so on will be brought back. Local lockdowns for Greater Manchester and the other usual areas and then a national lockdown by October.

All the “I’m postponing my holiday to 2021” people are now “postponing to 2022.”
Will you be doing it until 2023?
It’s harder to go abroad now than it was last year when we had no vaccines.

When is this going to be over?

So a quick google for the highest rates of infection by area tells me…

Sunderland 954/100k
Newcastle 948/100k
Middlesbrough 785/100k.

Highest area in Greater Manchester is Oldham with 646/100k.

Manchester is nowhere near.

I’m sorry you don’t know people who wear masks properly. The vast majority of the people I’ve seen wearing them wear them properly

MiaMarshmallows · 16/07/2021 19:20

I must be in the minority as I feel things may get bad for a while but will then settle. I think life will pretty much be normal in September especially schools etc

amission · 16/07/2021 19:20

Most people I see have them under their nose or on their chins.

Pointless.

I'm in Ireland and it's a cautious approach here but I feel here we wait so long to open stuff that by the time we do the next variant is doing the rounds, indoor dining is closed here and loads of pubs in my town are still shut.. in fact a lot have been shut since march 2020 as they don't have enough outside space and didn't serve food in the last lockdown.
I just don't get why they are being so pessimistic re surges if ppl are vaccinated, is it because younger people aren't and so spreading it? I thought in the last waves it was the elderly who were mainly in icu etc, are they not protected now and booster soon..
I assume the ppl who still catch covid and get seriously ill after two doses must be v rare. I can well imagine our schools not opening in September and if so we have plans to move away. In Ireland the schools closed completely, nothing open for students of key workers and nothing for students with sn....

MordredsOrrery · 16/07/2021 19:23

We don't get all the other winter respiratory illnesses to deal with at the same time so hospitals more able to cope. People are outside more. Children are not at school so not all mixing.

But all of those things will be happening again soon. Norovirus levels are already showing an unseasonal spike. What's the plan for the autumn and the winter ahead? Summer doesn't last forever and those conditions will be back within a few weeks (schools).

Crowsaregreat · 16/07/2021 19:25

We've had ten years of austerity in which the Tories have showed they don't care about people who are most dependent on the state. Poor people, sick people, disabled people. Ethnic minority people (Windrush). They literally don't care if these people die, they've been left to starve or sent back to a country they don't know or told they are able to work when they're a week from death. These are the people who are most likely to die of covid, Tories have already shown they don't care if these people die. They literally think it's better for vulnerable people to die than their corporate sponsors to lose out on trade.

I think the same. But I must admit I'm starting to wonder if my optimism is going to backfire again.
Demelza82 · 16/07/2021 19:27

Poor governance + individualistic behaviours

'strict measures' followed by over lax 'freedoms'

Chasing down the Brazilian variant and then letting the Delta variant run wild

Distributing the vaccine successfully then removing restrictions before we get to the vital crunch points

There's a pattern here . There is too much short term gain over long term gain

goldfinchfan · 16/07/2021 19:29

The problem is that no-one knows when this will be over.

we do not know the future.

Though everytime I do think Bozo does exactly the wrong thing.

MrsCremuel · 16/07/2021 19:29

I know this is very pessimistic but so far when they’ve said they may need to do something such as lockdowns and restrictions, it has then happened. Generally, the worst case scenario tends to come true so yes, I think further restrictions are likely.

RightYesButNo · 16/07/2021 19:29

@Trinitykb

Trust me, I’m at breaking point myself.
Then you should absolutely care that you’re being manipulated by the press. I saw the program Chris Whitty was on. He never even came close to suggesting another lockdown. The closest he even said was IF hospital cases got completely out of control, they’d have to “look” at things. And I showed you Lucy Fraser’s words, so now you know she’s completely in favor of opening up. So the question is: if another lockdown isn’t on the horizon, and no one has mentioned it, why are papers trying to make you feel so shite? I know it sounds easy to say, but don’t let them (caveat: I understand the news can bombard you and be relentless; sometimes the only answer is not looking at any of it when you know it’s time for something like this. I know some people who are on media blackout until after the 19th, because papers KNOW they’ll get tons of clicks if they even vaguely say opening might not happen, so they’ll latch onto anything).
amicissimma · 16/07/2021 21:06

@Waveafterwaveslowlydrifting

Cowardly tory government giving us the choice whether or not to wear masks

This will result in more hatred between strangers and conflict in public places.

Make a decision and own it Bozo!

But if you can't decide whether or not to wear a mask, knowing your own situation, each situation you are in, your own attitude to risk in general, your state of mind, the situation of the people with whom you mix, how on earth can the Prime Minister make that decision for you?

Other people will make different decisions based on their own circumstances, so any pronouncement from the government is going to be inappropriate for some.

delilahbucket · 16/07/2021 21:14

I'm so over it. I can put up with masks if they actually help. But I want my life back. I'm getting married in five weeks, third time lucky. Rather than all the exciting build up, I had to cancel my hen party, do dress fittings on my own, and I'm on edge constantly thinking it's going to be taken away from us at the last minute. Don't even get me started on dp's mum coming over from Spain, currently with no flights or accommodation booked and facing quarantine. I miss my choir, I miss our performances, we were always singing and raising money for charities. We've given up on the idea of a honeymoon, very few countries will take DS13 unvaccinated, and we wouldn't go without him. I want a spontaneous day out without having to book a year in advance on the off chance the weather might be nice enough to wander round a zoo. I want my business back because my sales dropped off a cliff the day the shops reopened and have not recovered at all, resulting in laying off staff. I am so done.
Poor DS is isolating this week due to cases at school. No one, especially not a 13 year old active boy, is designed to spend ten days stuck in the boundaries of their home when there is nothing wrong with them. At least we have a garden and I can come home at lunch time to sit with him in it 🙄

And even more economic uncertainty is the answer here? We need to get back to normal and minimise supply chain disruptions as much as possible as well as protect people’s livelihoods
Darbs76 · 16/07/2021 21:19

I hope shoppers will be considerate of small shop owners who have lost so much income already and wear a mask to protect the worker if nothing else. I’m completely fed up with it, my son’s got Covid this week and he’s 17 and super fit and looked dreadful the first couple of days. I miss going abroad, missed seeing my adult son this week and God knows when I’ll see him again. It is getting so tiring now

OrangeBananaFish · 16/07/2021 21:24

I gave up any hope weeks ago. All the way through this I have had hope that things will get better. I've looked for the good news within the bad. Now I have nothing left. Funny thing is my life is pretty much back to normal now. Its just the masks and I don't think they're going anywhere just yet. Even my much missed parkrun is back next week and then that's it for me, yet I feel so low and down about it. I need to lay of MN and the media TBH, its doing my mental health no good whatsoever. Problem is they are both like magnets and I just can't leave them.

I can't see an end and its depressing the shit out of me now.

fiveminutebreak · 16/07/2021 21:26

If all restrictions go on Monday then I can't see how they won't have to bring in restrictions again further down the line. Cases are rising now. They will inevitably rise further in a couple of weeks after 'freedom day'.... but keeping masks may actually help keep case numbers down... though there does seem to be an awful lot of people in the UK who don't believe masks work... so let's just see what happens when all masks are removed....

Was recently in the States where a mask mandate was lifted. A tiny minority were wearing masks but most people didn’t bother. Nowhere near the ‘herd immunity’ percentage either.

It was fine.

Unfortunately staff were still masking, felt bad for them in this weather.

howsicklyarsekissy · 16/07/2021 21:27

Sorry they can all go fuck themselves I have been at home with two disabled kids (ones autistic & been out if education 18 months, the other 18 year old adhd) I am
Are breaking point after he last year. Been
Drinking right Cope with the stress & pressure & drove to a suicide spot to finish it at one point. My friends who is 42 been Diagnosed with with serious skin cancer which would of been caught pre covid, my teeth are falling out & I have aged 10 years! I HAVE HAD ENOUGH

howsicklyarsekissy · 16/07/2021 21:29

Bloody autocorrect! I am not illiterate!

Dontwatchfootball · 16/07/2021 21:38

To be honest, they should have said at the beginning of this that pandemics like this take about 2 years to be over. Given people a realistic time scale rather than trying to be optimistic but raising false expectations.

byvirtue · 16/07/2021 21:39

I’ve been fed up for a long time.

I’m hoping this is it, the painful bit where we rip the plaster off and see what’s underneath.

We’ve essentially got 6 weeks to see what happens. I hope cases come down and start to stabilise by the start of September so we really are in a position to live with covid this winter. Who knows we just have to wait and see.

entropynow · 16/07/2021 23:28

@amission

Except masks protect other people. So you won't give people a hard time for protecting you, but you expect them to be fine with you not protecting them? Hmmmmm. That's big of you.

I understand your perspectives however it's a pandemic, I'd say it will be another year or two before progressing to normality pre pandemic.
