For various reasons, I am not comfortable stripping down in a beach.

AIBU to go into the water in leggings and tshirt?

I say go for it, I see people in string bikinis, burkinis, wet suits, just paddling in clothes, all sorts basically! Just be careful as the material can become heavy in the water if you’re wearing normal clothes so don’t go too far in.

User112 · 16/07/2021 12:04

I'm not a good swimmer. So it;ll be playing with the kids just knee deep in water anyway

From a safety point of view, I’d buy leggings and a top made for swimming.

Chemenger · 16/07/2021 12:05

If you’re just paddling being fully clothed is totally normal.

Xiaoxiong · 16/07/2021 12:08

Absolutely YANBU to wear whatever you feel comfortable wearing, but I would get stuff designed for swimming as many t-shirts become very clingy and see-through when wet, which kind of negates the point! They're also not UV proof and you can burn through a white t-shirt surprisingly easily especially when it's wet.

I'd probably wear a rash vest and shorts, or surf leggings. You won't stand out in the least in any of these at the beach, I'm in Cornwall at the moment and half the people at the beach are wearing long sleeved ankle length wetsuits. My own kids wear long-sleeve rash vests with knee-length board shorts, because they hate putting sun cream on!

Shorts? Don't go into the water in jeans or heavy fabric, uncomfortable and dangerous.

Sn0tnose · 16/07/2021 12:11

If you’re a size 16+, Yours do swim leggings for around £18. They do knee length and shorter shorts as well. Although I don’t suppose it matters safety wise if you only want to paddle.

IntermittentParps · 16/07/2021 12:16

If you're only knee deep it's not an issue. Normal clothes with trousers rolled up, or a dress or shorts.

Malin52 · 16/07/2021 12:18

I run on the beach. Maybe 10-20km. I wear long leggings and a vest. A rashie top in winter. Once I'm finished I go in the water in my running gear and swim about 2k. I doubt anyone would even notice my presence never mind what I'm wearing.

Hot days I then sunbathe. One thing is all the black lycra is bloody hot so I might strip down to my bikini bottoms.

If I was at the beach in the summer and not running I'd be in my bikini and not think twice.

Size 18 and 47 years old.

Porcupineintherough · 16/07/2021 12:19

YANBU, I've been swimming/sailing/paddle boarding in gym gear for years.

Malin52 · 16/07/2021 12:20

Oh and yes it's close flitting gym/yoga leggings not some heavy cotton whatsits

wombatspoopcubes · 16/07/2021 12:24

I wear swim shorts that end just above the knee and a tankini top.

You're not alone in this.

Divineswirls · 16/07/2021 12:31

Yes leggings and T-shirt is fine

Divineswirls · 16/07/2021 12:32

Wear a wet suit

Kanaloa · 16/07/2021 12:33

If you’re only paddling knee deep couldn’t you just roll up your trousers? Then of course it would be fine. I wouldn’t swim in leggings and a t-shirt, I wouldn’t be uncomfortable in wet clothes afterwards unless I could change quickly.

regthetabbycat · 16/07/2021 12:38

@MinnieMountain

From a safety point of view, I’d buy leggings and a top made for swimming.
Why?
shouldistop · 16/07/2021 12:40

I wouldn't change into swim wear to paddle up to my knees.

LuxOlente · 16/07/2021 12:41

Because being dragged down by heavy cotton clothing could lead to a rather miserable end to the holiday.

onlyhereforthecake · 16/07/2021 12:42

It doesn't look comfortable at all, that's the only thing.

I'd invest into a sea-friendly outfit, from things like:
these

to modesty swimwear like that

more comfortable, designed for the water, dries quicker

Clothes are so uncomfortable wet.

PopsicleHustler · 16/07/2021 12:45

Hi guys

I am a muslin so I wear long stuff when swinging. It's nice material and dormant weigh down.
Everyone started at me though. I didn t really care. Am used to it as I stand out being a white Muslim. But I have a been a muslim for quite a while so am used to the stares and comments now

PopsicleHustler · 16/07/2021 12:45

Swinging, not swimming lol.
Bloody predictive text

I have some swim shorts and an swim vest from this crowd- very impressed. I’m a size 12 and they’re very practical.

I’m not funny about wearing swimwear, I just can’t be bothered defuzzing and constantly readjusting a bikini while managing two toddlers who are constantly trying to get into danger while at the beach.

tallduckandhandsome · 16/07/2021 12:47

Normal leggings and top aren't nice when wet. You can full length swim wear that is leggings and full sleeves or half sleeves top. Much more comfortable and sun safe.

Amazon has loads, you can pick each up for £10 or splash out on £50 if you like.

Chickychickydodah · 16/07/2021 12:56

I’m a bigger lady and I always go swimming in leggings and tea shirt
