For various reasons, I am not comfortable stripping down in a beach.

AIBU to go into the water in leggings and tshirt?

@PopsicleHustler your typo made me laugh Grin

HappyRaven · 16/07/2021 12:59

Nobody worth thinking about will care what you wear. Especially if you are only paddling and playing with your children. Don't feel you need to miss out on swimming though because life is too short to keep worrying about strangers.

RestingPandaFace · 16/07/2021 13:03

I regularly teach sailing in lucy locket loves leggings. Gym leggings are much more comfortable than cotton when they get wet. Rash vest or wicking sports t-shirt on the top so it doesn’t go see-through and clingy.

I hate wearing a wetsuit and won’t wear one unless it’s freezing, but I burn easily so this is my compromise.

@LuxOlente

Because being dragged down by heavy cotton clothing could lead to a rather miserable end to the holiday.
Grin It would spoil it rather.
MinnieMountain · 16/07/2021 13:19

Exactly @Etinox. It reminds me of lifesaving classes at school.

InvisibleDragon · 16/07/2021 13:22

Definitely not unreasonable to want to wear something that feels comfortable.

Can I recommend modest swimwear though? For example, these options from the unfortunately named SeaFanny:
www.seafanny.com/collections/semi-covered-burkini-swimwear

I got something similar for a beach holiday with religious in-laws and it is much much better than leggings and t-shirt. Lighter, dries much faster, doesn't get weighed down in the water or fall down. Very good for avoiding sunburn too.

I was extremely sceptical because I really enjoy swimming and hated the thought of wearing something restrictive, but I was very pleasantly surprised

newnortherner111 · 16/07/2021 13:41

A wet suit perhaps?

gogohm · 16/07/2021 13:44

Do what you feel comfortable in but be aware cotton is very heavy when wet

MrsTulipTattsyrup · 16/07/2021 13:44

Another vote for quick-drying swim leggings and a T-shirt shaped rash vest. Much more comfortable than a swimsuit, and faster drying than regular clothes. I never went in the sea until I discovered these things as I hate wearing a swimsuit.

paddlingon · 16/07/2021 13:50

I have a couple of swim shorts and rash top sets from landsend.
I can put them on at the start of the day and just wear them as normal clothes.
They dry off quicker than a normal t shirt would.

Maria53 · 16/07/2021 13:54

No OP, fully clothed is a drowning risk. I have experience with this sadly.

I think you should find a modest costume or take on some of the links and suggestions above.

Also life is not for looking like a fashion magazine or insta ready on the beach. There will be people of all shapes, sizes and appearances out there.

Agree with other posters about acquiring actual swimwear rather than just your normal clothes - salt water can be like acid to a lot of fabrics. Invest in swimwear that suits your level of modesty and have fun splashing.

We're talking about paddling knee-deep!

unless the OP is with a baby, you can't guarantee that the kids won't go a bit further/ be swept away slightly, be caught in a wave. Nothing horrendous as such, but you can stick to "knee-deep"in a lake, less so in the sea, even a quiet one.
PurpleOkapi · 16/07/2021 14:09

As others have said, if you're going to be wrangling children in the water, you really should wear something that will allow you to easily swim out after them or dive under if need be. There are plenty of good options out there that cover just as much as a t-shirt and leggings, but are made of swim fabrics rather than cotton.

LemonRoses · 16/07/2021 14:13

If you are paddling, just tuck your skirt in your knickers or wear shorts.

If you want to enjoy the sea with your children, wear a long t shirt over a costume or buy swimming leggings and top or a swim dress.

In truth, nobody minds what you look like apart from you and swimmers are very accepting of body differences.

sloanerangerpandora · 16/07/2021 14:23

A burkini?

bloodyhell19 · 16/07/2021 14:23

Do not go into the sea in normal clothing. It's too risky if kids go further out or get swept a little bit (water does move...) You will not be able to reach them in a hurry if you are weighed down in regular clothing. Also if clothes get wet, the dried saltwater is so uncomfortable.

Modest swimwear is a better solution. Or if changing your clothes on the beach is the problem and not the actual being in swimwear in the water then invest in a dryrobe or similar?

Skysblue · 16/07/2021 23:22

I known it’s hard to believe when you’re feeling self conscious but no one there cares what you wear. At all.

Wear leggings and t shirt. It’s fine. No one cares.

Rno3gfr · 16/07/2021 23:29

You might have trouble doing that in France

justasmalltownmum · 16/07/2021 23:40

Checkout Muslim / modest swimwear.

skybluee · 16/07/2021 23:42

Lots of companies do swimming shorts for women now. Pair that with a rash vest and it's essentially a T shirt and shorts. Also will dry really quickly. Think that's better than normal clothes.

Jennyw12 · 17/07/2021 10:05

I often go swimming in a T-shirt but often find it difficult to get the sodden shirt off when I get back to the beach. I often need to find some help.Do you?
