Would you use something that had been left behind in a hotel room?

Name change as I've been chatting about this today and said I'd post on here.

So we were away a couple of weeks ago. On day two, DH found a new(ish) bottle of sun cream in our very nice, but not so well cleaned or sanitised room.

We both agreed it was not something someone would come back for, like a piece of clothing, jewellery or a book.

I said I'd have just left it behind. He thinks it's a waste as it would just be thrown away and end up in landfill. He has kept it and has been using it.

I've said I don't want to use it and it's not to go near the DC.

He thinks I'm being ridiculous.

Just interested to know what others think.

Depends on the condition of the bottle I think. Does it look “used”?

foobio · 15/07/2021 22:58

I'd use it, I hate waste!

Flyonthewall01 · 15/07/2021 22:59

I wouldn't, the idea feels a bit gross to be honest

Thehop · 15/07/2021 23:00

I’d use it.

Yetano · 15/07/2021 23:00

Looks like it could have been opened before, but is full.

I'm usually very against adding to landfill unnecessarily but I don't think I could bring myself to use a stranger's old suncream.

GirlAloud · 15/07/2021 23:01

Many years ago, I found an unopened bottle of bourbon in the boot of a hire car I picked up at LAX. I bought a bottle of Coke from the supermarket and drank whiskey & cokes during my holiday.

Taliskerskye · 15/07/2021 23:02

What do you think happened to the sun cream
Someone put covid in it?? Or maybe the hiv

Time40 · 15/07/2021 23:04

I'd use it. Why not just wash the bottle, OP? The contents can't possibly be contaminated by anything.

toastantea · 15/07/2021 23:05

I wouldn't use it. Im autistic though and my brain just does not allow me to use something that hasn't been only mine. New if you like.

As a side note I would be really unhappy in a hotel right now that was so badly cleaned they missed a bottle of sun lotion.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 15/07/2021 23:05

No. Could have been opened over a year ago and therefore out of date.

pigsDOfly · 15/07/2021 23:05

Even if he uses it, won't the bottle still go to landfill?

No I wouldn't use someone else's unwanted sun cream. Just feels a bit icky.

DelurkingAJ · 15/07/2021 23:06

We’ve been handed sunscreen before by departing holidaymakers who didn’t want to carry it home and used it gladly.

Newchallenge · 15/07/2021 23:06

Given the Salisbury poisonings from a perfume, I'd think twice. But DH would definitely use it!

Taliskerskye · 15/07/2021 23:06

@Snoopsnoggysnog
You know they have use by dates.’honestly the thinking comprehension of some people is quite shocking

uktrippin · 15/07/2021 23:06

I left sunscreen behind when I found it in a zipped part of the case and realised it had been there for a couple of years.

Out of date, not safe to use. So no. Bin it.

uktrippin · 15/07/2021 23:07

Mine doesn't Confused

Taliskerskye · 15/07/2021 23:07

@pigsDOfly
You know that most plastic bottles are recycled

Honestly the thinking comprehension

I'd be totally happy with that. It's just not knowing who or when it was out there. I can't get what happened to that poor lady in Salisbury out of my head.

newmumwithquestions · 15/07/2021 23:08

I’d use it. And have both taken and given sun cream at the end of a holiday

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 15/07/2021 23:08

It is item-dependent. Suncream, yes. Butt-plug no.

Northernsoullover · 15/07/2021 23:09

When I was a tour rep, guests left all sorts behind they didn't want to carry home. The cleaning staff would divvy it up. I don't think I bought toiletries in all the time I worked abroad. Shampoo, spray anti perspirant, sun cream. The works! Anything over a third full was passed on.

Taliskerskye · 15/07/2021 23:09

@uktrippin
What!
I have never had sunscreen that doesn’t have an expiration date.

Your thinking comprehension, I assume?

Sunscreen (and cosmetics) are only supposed to be left open for a certain amount of time. The back of the bottle will have a symbol like an open pot saying e.g. ‘12M’ or ‘18M’ to let you know how long you have to use it.

I'm all for reduce, reuse, recycle, but I don't think I could use something like that. I'd think someone had contaminated it on purpose or something.

What if they had scabies or something, rubbed cream all over their body with their bare hands and then touched up the bottle. No thanks.
