Would you use something that had been left behind in a hotel room?

Name change as I've been chatting about this today and said I'd post on here.

So we were away a couple of weeks ago. On day two, DH found a new(ish) bottle of sun cream in our very nice, but not so well cleaned or sanitised room.

We both agreed it was not something someone would come back for, like a piece of clothing, jewellery or a book.

I said I'd have just left it behind. He thinks it's a waste as it would just be thrown away and end up in landfill. He has kept it and has been using it.

I've said I don't want to use it and it's not to go near the DC.

He thinks I'm being ridiculous.

Just interested to know what others think.

@Taliskerskye

What do you think happened to the sun cream Someone put covid in it?? Or maybe the hiv
🤣
Hallyup6 · 16/07/2021 05:36

Out of date and not safe to use? Bonkers. It'll just be less effective, not unsafe. I don't think I'd use it though, only because it feels a little strange.

WeMarchOn · 16/07/2021 05:52

As someone from Salisbury i agree with others about not using as you don't know what is in the bottle.

People who think using it is yucky…what do you think about using communal hand wash / hand gel in public loos/ areas 🤔
MrsBede · 16/07/2021 06:17

Crikey - people making sick faces at using a stranger's suncream? Confused. No one is asking you to scrape it off their sweating body and your own. They haven't actually touched the cream in the bottle you know.

I would wipe the bottle (wouldn't have 2 years ago) and use. Probably, but not definitely, use on me for a day before putting on the dc.

Sorry, but the post beginning 'As someone from Salisbury...' made me smile. What happened there was awful but was a very specific incident that doesn't mean it's now unsafe to use items that are commonly left in hotel rooms for obvious reasons.

MrsBede · 16/07/2021 06:17

onto your own

Boomshakalack · 16/07/2021 06:44

I would use it if it wasn’t greasy!

Nicolastuffedone · 16/07/2021 06:54

No. I wouldn’t use it.

sandgrown · 16/07/2021 06:59

Years ago when I first went to Spain we were told that the cleaners were poorly paid and would appreciate left over shampoo etc so we always left it for them.

Ragwort · 16/07/2021 07:05

Of course I would, but then I work in a charity shop and practically everything I own/use is second hand (paid for to the shop of course). I am constantly amazed at the wonderful donations we receive, lots of perfume, cosmetics etc

sandgrown · 16/07/2021 07:07

The cleaner who took my lovely jumper that I bought the day before and had only worn once obviously had no qualms using someone else’s stuff ! I contacted the hotel as soon as I got home but it had “disappeared!”

Bluesheep8 · 16/07/2021 07:19

No. Could have been opened over a year ago and therefore out of date.

They have dates on don't they?
If it's still in the bottle, then it hasn't been used by someone else, stands to reason.
Surely you'd only use it if you'd run out of your own anyway. I'd use it in those circs but otherwise leave for someone else.
Also, you use hand soap that's been used by many other people.

Bluesheep8 · 16/07/2021 07:23

Someone had no qualms about taking (and presumably using) a large bottle of newly opened (used twice) perfume I left in a hotel room once.
I went back after we had checked out and it was nowhere to be found.

Bluntness100 · 16/07/2021 07:26

I’d use it, I was on vacation once, I can’t recall where it was, I think the Maldives and sun cream was extortionate if you ran out. So guests were encouraged to drop their unused sun cream in a basket on departure and then if someone else ran out they could just go get some from thr basket instead of going and spending fifty quid on a new bottle. I thought it was a great idea and we certainly left our partially used bottles on dept.

thecapitalsunited · 16/07/2021 07:28

My sunscreen doesn’t have a date on, just one of those 24m logos. But no one would know when I opened it. Not even I do!

ohthatbloodycat · 16/07/2021 07:49

I would use it if I ran out of my own stuff.

Scautish · 16/07/2021 07:52

Fuck no. Never ever. Feel quite ill even thinking about it.

ScreamGulpLaughandGasp · 16/07/2021 08:00

No I wouldn't, just like I wouldn't use shampoo that had been left. Communal soap is usually in a sealed container only filled by the people in the hotel so I'd use that with no problem
My focus would be on the cleanliness of the room if they hadn't spotted a bottle on the side

gogohm · 16/07/2021 08:01

Sunscreen, yes I would use it. I would also leave it behind potentially if out of space/flying hand luggage only

Nesbo · 16/07/2021 08:02

All you do with sunscreen is hold it over your hand and squeeze some out.

As someone said above, it is the same action as using hand wash in a loo (put there and opened by a stranger), or a bottle of hand sanitizer you might find in any number of places now.

What’s the difference?

LOL!

Livpool · 16/07/2021 08:08

I'd definitely use it

20viona · 16/07/2021 08:09

Eww no

MythsandSparkles · 16/07/2021 08:10

@JaceLancs

I never take home beauty products unless really expensive items Always leave part used shampoo conditioner shower gel sun cream etc Housekeeping team can take, bin or leave for next guests I hate waste
Eh?

If you hated waste you’d take your own beauty products home and actually use them surely?!

Unless you go to somewhere that has an agreement about leaving unused sun cream etc then 100% housekeeping are literally just throwing your left behind stuff in the bin…which is a waste no?

HmmConfused

They don’t have expiration dates. As other posters have explained, they have little symbols which indicate how long you should keep the bottle after it’s been opened. It’s called a period after opening sign. So if you took a bottle from a hotel room you’d have no way of knowing when the other person had opened it. I have worked in the cosmetics industry. There’s nothing wrong with my comprehension, thanks Hmm
