To water pistol a cat

Oregano20 · 15/07/2021 18:44

Moved in to a new house a few months ago. Neighbours seem friendly but they're never in their garden so haven't really spoken to them much and I don't want to ask her this incase iabu and it's dead awkward. But Neighbours cat keeps shitting in our garden.
This sucks because

  1. I have to be extra vigilant for my crawling DS
  2. The cat shits in the borders and digs up my plants.

I tried cayenne pepper. DP wants to get a water pistol. Google says it is effective.

If it was your cat would I piss you off if you saw me give your cat a cheeky wee squirt?

No, I would be delighted you were being proactive about it! Doesn’t hurt the cat at all, so wouldn’t bother me.

Empra123 · 15/07/2021 21:37

No. Have told all my neighbours to do this if my moggy us being a nuisance

Bargebill19 · 15/07/2021 21:43

You can by motion sensor water sprayers.

Bargebill19 · 15/07/2021 21:44

Buy!

Water pistol fine but not a super soaker as that could hurt

OnTheBoardwalk · 15/07/2021 22:00

No problem at all. Mine have cat litter but like to wonder in next doors garden and he’s not a fan. I suggested water pistol to him

I had a water spray when cat went through hard of scratching sofa. Just a quick mist spray near him then all I needed to do was shake the bottle to stop him

therocinante · 15/07/2021 22:01

I gave my neighbours a water gun for this exact purpose, my cats are wee fuckers. Go for it!

Bloodypunkrockers · 15/07/2021 22:07

If it's in your garden
, spray away. No need to ask the owner first

The downside is you have to be there. The cat that shota in my garden always seems to do it when I'm not there.

And it's not fox shit and it doesn't bury it - just pre-empting the usual posts on these threads

Lillipops · 15/07/2021 22:09

You need one of these www.argos.co.uk/product/9219139 maybe 2 to cover the garden...harmless but no cat shit !

Highfive2021 · 15/07/2021 22:14

I use a small bottle of water on the cats that try to come into our house (think the lady who lived here before encouraged them) never had to get close enough for it to touch them for them to run.

Vilanelle · 15/07/2021 22:20

My neighbours have got a new cat. Just turned up one day and he has attacked mine twice, both occasions needing veterinary treatment.

He comes in and corner mine in his garden and my cat is scared of his own shadow so I often get the water pistol out

Purplebunnie · 15/07/2021 22:23

Yes absolutely fine. I have 2 cats and we are waging war on a neighbours cat who has taken to leaving us a present in the middle of our lawn. We try and shout and run him off but we will be resorting to a water pistol very soon. Its a shame, he's a lovely friendly cat and has only started doing this since we lost our lovely 17 year old

EvenRosesHaveThorns · 15/07/2021 22:25

Probably the nicest and gentlest thing you could do given the alternatives

DroopyClematis · 15/07/2021 22:26

On warm days, I usually put a sprinkler on ( obviously regarding local water authority regulations.)
High velocity water guns are brilliant.
However , I now have a dog and there are no more feline intrusions.
( Bloody annoyed at the deep holes on my lawn though🙄)

OldTinHat · 15/07/2021 22:28

My neighbour's cat uses the flat roof under a bedroom as his litter tray. I have a water pistol at the ready 24/7. I'm sick (literally) of turds all over my flat roof.

user1473878824 · 15/07/2021 22:29

I squirt mine with a water pistol when she does something she’s not supposed to! Does them absolutely no harm and if my cat was irritating my neighbours I’d tell them to crack on.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/07/2021 22:31

Frankly, no. This is nonsense. Cats always go in a quiet spot and they (mostly) cover it up. But they won't be shitting anywhere near the lawn.

Cats often shit in a border near a lawn IME, which is what the OP clearly meant, not on the lawn itself.

AnneElliott · 15/07/2021 22:33

No go ahead. It doesn't hurt then and I suggest it to my neighbours if my cats are troublesome!

I also water pistol other peoples cats if they're a pain I. The arse in my garden!

GolfEchoRomeoTangoIndia · 15/07/2021 22:34

I’d be fine with this. I have a spray bottle in the kitchen for the ironing which I’ve occasionally used on neighbourhood cats who were getting aggressive with my own pampered darlings. Works a treat, does no harm.

Gentleness · 15/07/2021 22:34

I found that skewers helped! Not what you are thinking....

I broke wooden skewers in half and stuck them in the soil where the cats usually dug and dropped. They were enough of an impediment to stop it happening, and no danger to anyone (broken end up). It was a raised veg bed that was the issue for us - the kids could get into it but learned not to with dramatic shouts of "No! Poo! Bad! Danger!".

Bellend101 · 15/07/2021 22:37

It wouldn't bother me at all. I have a little spray bottle filled with water that I use on the cat when she's scratching my bedroom door at 2am. I've also used it for neighbours' cats who try to follow mine into the house. A bit of water won't hurt the cat.

JaceLancs · 15/07/2021 22:49

I have 2 cats and would have no problem with anyone water spraying them providing the water pressure was not high enough to hurt them
Fortunately where I live - nearly every house has a cat or dog and they tend to stick to their own territory - it’s the local wildlife I feel sorry for

BamberGascoine · 15/07/2021 23:01

Wouldn’t bother me. An elderly neighbour had tried everything in her garden. I described my cat (lots on our road) and told her as long as she caught him in the act then feel free! She left a water spray out handy and it worked! Not perfect but better than it was

BIWI · 15/07/2021 23:06

But still in a border. Why is a child crawling around in the border and not the lawn itself?
mariomushroom · 15/07/2021 23:11

Our cat once came in soaking wet and very chastened once so I assume he got zapped! It’s fine. We had a water pistol ready to zap other cats - one big tomcat used to bully and attack our two in our garden and he got sprayed a couple of times
