To water pistol a cat

Oregano20 · 15/07/2021 18:44

Moved in to a new house a few months ago. Neighbours seem friendly but they're never in their garden so haven't really spoken to them much and I don't want to ask her this incase iabu and it's dead awkward. But Neighbours cat keeps shitting in our garden.
This sucks because

  1. I have to be extra vigilant for my crawling DS
  2. The cat shits in the borders and digs up my plants.

I tried cayenne pepper. DP wants to get a water pistol. Google says it is effective.

If it was your cat would I piss you off if you saw me give your cat a cheeky wee squirt?

Do it all the time. . I’m more offended about people who think it’s ok to buy a creature who will go into random gardens, dig up plants and shit all over the place. If you want a cat, get an indoor one.

Fangsalot89 · 15/07/2021 20:03

I have two cats. One shits in my garden flower beds while the other has the common decency to crap elsewhere. Feel free to shove the water pistol up your problematic cats arse if it’s stops them. 🤣

tillytoodles1 · 15/07/2021 20:04

Now I know why my cat is wet on clear days. She's old so doesn't go out much and uses a litter tray. I guess one of my neighbours just doesn't like cats.

Awwww bless her.

Why are you letting your DS crawl in the flower beds?

I was going to ask exactly the same thing.

Glad I have escaped your judgement. I didn't buy mine. They were all rescued
Shehasadiamondinthesky · 15/07/2021 20:21

I have a cat and I recently hosed down the neighbours cat because she tried to savage my cat. They both got soaked but it didn't happen again.

inmyslippers · 15/07/2021 20:22

Perfectly humane

Oregano20 · 15/07/2021 20:24

I don't let him crawl in the flower bed per se, it just goes from lawn to border. And it's not the end of the world if he crawls a little too far from the grass into the mud while I'm chasing after him. But obviously I have to check the garden as there's often steaming turds.

Really? So the cat has literally just done a poo in your garden so it’s still warm when you come across it?
MadeOfStarStuff · 15/07/2021 20:27

YANBU

If the owner doesn’t like it they should prevent their cat from roaming by cat proofing their own garden

Noodledoodledoo · 15/07/2021 20:29

Sports cap water bottle, I had cats next door who used to use my raised bed to poo in. I happened to be walking in with a sports cap bottle in my hand and got him in one shot. All I had to do going forwards was show him an empty bottle and it ran!!

It's an argument in a favour of a super soaker

Oh yes, huge pillars of steam wafting from the turds. I think they're trying to send smoke signals.

Or maybe you're just looking to argue

Yy, another cat lover here (and my last one crapped in my own garden).
It won't hurt them but will deter them.
I've suggested the same to dc1 who has a very bold fox trying to get in their cat flap!

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 15/07/2021 20:58

@NorthernSoulForever

I don't have cats but I was wondering, would a bucket of lukewarm water be more effective more quickly and not harm the cat? Could any cat owners please enlighten me?
Quicker to squirt than fill a bucket, walk slowly to the back door without spilling any and rendering the floor a deathtrap and you'll be more likely to be able to reach the vicinity of the cat with the water pistol than the bucket.

A water pistol can be subtle so they just know they get splashed when they go in the garden - not that they only get splashed when you're in the kitchen and running the tap.

And finally, most of us are on water meters these days. Those buckets add up over time, whereas the water pistol takes no more than a jug.

Water gun added to Tesco groceries! Thanks everyone

Our cat likes to sleep on next door’s garden furniture rather than ours (she does toilet in our garden though) and I frequently tell them to spray her with a plant spray if she is a pest. Fortunately they love her and are happy just to shake hair off their cushions!

I wouldn’t be very happy if someone tipped a whole bucket of water over her though.

CathyorClaire · 15/07/2021 21:10

If Dcat was shitting in someone's garden and got squirted I wouldn't have an issue.

Damn thing has tried to walk on water (our weed ridden pond) in her own garden and survived. Don't think a watery shot in the chops or arse is going to cut it.

Frankly, no. This is nonsense. Cats always go in a quiet spot and they (mostly) cover it up. But they won't be shitting anywhere near the lawn.

If your DS is crawling in the flower beds, then there are all manner of other things he could be eating/picking up. Your responsibility to stop him doing that.

dudsville · 15/07/2021 21:31

I have two hunter cats that come in too my beautiful oasis and kill birds. I now recognise the sound of birds in distress and calmly walk to the hose pipe. It's so, so gratifying. I wish I could get cat-sensor sprinklers!

VeganCheesePlease · 15/07/2021 21:35

As long as you don't hurt the cat, yanbu.

Kakey1294129 · 15/07/2021 21:36

It's only water so don't see a prob. I'm not a cat owner though. We had the same issue. Nothing really worked. We were never quick enough to catch it pooing to squirt with water. The only thing that worked was getting a dog 😂

A friend of mine is actively encouraging her neighbours to spray her cat with water as it is prone to wondering into people gardens and even houses.
