People with coughs shouldn’t be allowed in restaurants?

AIBU to think people with continual coughs shouldn’t be allowed in a restaurant at the moment and to be annoyed a restaurant allowed someone with a very obvious cough dine there?

My DS and I should just shut ourselves away with our asthma and hayfever then should we?

@Andrewsgirl

I’m not trying to wind anyone up. I am interested in what other peoples thoughts are. When I made the booking the email confirmation clearly says you should not attend if you have Covid symptoms. A continual cough is a Covid symptom. I was shocked to sit at a table next to a diner who spent most of the night continually coughing.
No. A new continual cough is a covid symptom. Lots of people always have continual coughs and if you have a temporary continual cough due to say cold or hay fever but a negative PCR test then it’s fine to be out and about.

I say this as someone who is being cautious myself perhaps it’s better if you avoid indoor places if your not comfortable with them.

SingingInTheShithouse · 15/07/2021 08:29

I put my mask on to go into a supermarket recently & somehow managed to inhale a bit of fluff, which had me fighting a cough all around the shop.

I initially felt embarrassed, until I realised even the maskless covidiots we're giving everyone a very wide birth. It was great 😂

It is a tough one & I understand your worry, but cough doesn't always mean covid. We have family with COPD & asthma too & I know some have eaten out, but have let the restaurant know they have a chronic cough due to other medical issues & not Covid. So the restaurant likely knows more than you do

BobMortimersPetOwl · 15/07/2021 08:29

You're plainly being ridiculous and very dramatic.

People cough for all sorts of reasons. My husband has cystic fibrosis which means he often coughs. Should he be locked up inside forever to spare anyone thinking he's spreading disease?

SingingInTheShithouse · 15/07/2021 08:29

Giving me a wide birth, not everyone 🥴

Sirzy · 15/07/2021 08:30

Ds is 11. He has coughed for the last 11 years. He has a variety of lung problems and spent last year shielding. He has had a fair few Covid tests if symptoms have changed.

We are now at a point where we are cautiously going back out into the world. He will probably cough because that’s him!

If you have a problem wonderful because it means you will be sure to keep your distance from us and protect him!

VerticalHorizon · 15/07/2021 08:34

People who start crazy threads should be made to quarantine from MN for 14 days.

MrsSkylerWhite · 15/07/2021 08:34

I don’t want to sit next to coughing people in restaurants which is why I’m steering clear of restaurants atm. Perhaps you need to do the same?

TheNameTheWebsiteForgot · 15/07/2021 08:38

I cough all the time. A known side effect of my blood pressure medication.

BrumCahoots · 15/07/2021 08:41

If you don't want to go out where there may be coughing people just stay in

Cooldryplace · 15/07/2021 08:42

DH had this for years, his tablets were changed and his cough stopped instantly. Worth asking GP about.
shouldistop · 15/07/2021 08:44

My dad had a cough when he had terminal lung cancer, would you have denied him dinner at a restaurant?
What about people with asthma or copd?

If you're scared, you stay home.

Direstraitsmates · 15/07/2021 08:46

I've had a cough since I was 12. Hay fever and asthma. I take antihistimes and inhalers every day which helps but I still cough continuously. My DC, my mother and my siblings are the same. I felt paranoid enough about it before coronavirus. I'll never be able to go out in public again if everyone develops your attitude. How about you don't go to restaurants? You won't be able to catch coronavirus from other diners if you are not there.

ihtwsf · 15/07/2021 08:46

Stay at home.
Absolutely ridiculous.
I got shouted at by someone in the street because I was coughing (I was on the other side of the road to her). The fucking cough was because I have hay fever and something had set it off in the back of my throat.
The woman got really aggressive, yelling at me to self-isolate and get a test.

This sort of nonsense has to stop. We have to either trust others to know their own health issues and to get a test/self-isolate if they suspect they have COVID symptoms rather than an on-going health problem. Or we can protect ourselves if we don't trust others by staying away from places such as restaurants.
And of course the vast majority of people are able to receive a COVID vaccine to protect themselves further.

Wheresmybiscuit3 · 15/07/2021 08:48

Lots of people cough for many reasons. The vast majority of the time it’s not because of Covid. I don’t think it’s fair to assume the restaurant will police this. Can you imagine the aggro they would get?

Anyway, coughs are so last year.

Rockdown2020 · 15/07/2021 08:49

My dad has lung cancer which produces a frequent cough. Is he not allowed out to enjoy a meal when he feels up to it (which is rare)? YABU and nasty IMO.

No it’s a NEW continuous cough. Many people cough for other reasons than covid and have been for years….
MyriadeOfThings · 15/07/2021 08:55

What you are actually saying is that you trust no one to stay at home if they have covid @Andrewsgirl.

How is that right?

gogohm · 15/07/2021 08:55

I have acid reflux, it causes me to cough. I haven't got covid

SamMil · 15/07/2021 09:02

@Andrewsgirl

Bit of a difficult thing to establish though, whether it’s new or old cough !
You sound a little crazy...

If you are the person with the cough, it is not difficult to establish. Unless you have severe amnesia, I'm sure you will realise if you have a long-term or new cough.

If you are not the person with the cough, it's really none of your business. If you're that paranoid, don't go to a restaurant.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 15/07/2021 09:04

@Shelddd

This thread is so sad. People have learned literally nothing from covid and will continue to go out while sick and infect other people.
Don't be ridiculous! The majority of posters on this thread are giving reasons why they cough, none of which are contagious - hay fever, asthma, acid reflux, COPD etc.

As I said upthread, I cough with hay fever, acid reflux and stress. I'm not staying indoors to pacify the likes of you and the OP.

ArnoldJudasRimmer · 15/07/2021 09:08

I have a cough at the moment, won't budge, had more than one negative covid test and no-one else in the house has it (including kids who are constantly on me!).
I wear a mask and keep my distance from others when out and I'm avoiding crowded places by choice. I'm not staying indoors until it completely disappears.

Conchitastrawberry · 15/07/2021 09:12

My dad has asbestosis and coughs all the time. Should he stay home and not eat out ever again?

ElderButtFuckinNaked · 15/07/2021 09:16

I'm on the spectrum and have a "tic" cough that is basically clearing my throat when I'm anxious.

My DH coughs a lot when it's hay fever season.

There are millions of reasons for coughing that have nothing to do with covid.
