To want to catch Covid now ?

LaurieFairyCake · 14/07/2021 22:53

And not later ?

I don't think we can avoid catching Covid in the next couple of years without restrictions I don't want to do

It's possible that some will happily not hug people/go into shops/not really travel on public transport for the next couple of years till hopefully it mutates into something much less horrid

So if I'm going to catch Covid I want it this summer now I'm double vaccinated. I don't trust the government to put in a proper booster shot in time.

I've had NO illnesses for 18 months - not one cold nor norovirus - really unusual since I worked with children until recently. I've not been 'proper' shopping to a shopping centre, no browsing, only a couple of socially distanced outdoor pubs and restaurants so I've caught nothing there.

I am obviously scared of Covid (looks really shit, scared of Long Covid) but I DEFINITELY don't want to catch it in winter when the there's more demand in hospitals.

I definitely don't want to catch it at one of those idiotic pox parties as the viral load would be much worse.

But I do want it now and not in a precarious future time Sad

To be fair, I've had it once before Christmas, had a vaccine 5 weeks ago and have now got it again...

emilylily · 14/07/2021 22:59

Immunity to Covid doesn't last- that's why we there might be a booster jab in the Autumn. That means that getting Covid now, won't stop you getting it again so there's really no benefit to getting it now as opposed to any other time.

The best hope you have is just that the Covid jabs work.

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 14/07/2021 23:01

You'll probably get it several times over the next few years. Most of us will I bet.

LaurieFairyCake · 14/07/2021 23:02

Yes, I know loads of people who've had it twice

It feels like less of a gamble to be double jabbed and have Covid and then possibly get a weaker dose in winter though Grin

Amboseli · 14/07/2021 23:02

I've not had it to my knowledge. But I know what you mean. We're all going to get it one day, why not just get it over with now although there is always the worry of long covid or hospitalisation even though I'm double jabbed.

Buzzinwithbez · 14/07/2021 23:08

I'd rather have it now in summer while my vitamin d levels are hopefully high and my immune system is likely to be functioning better than in winter.
I do think I had it January 2000 though.

LindaEllen · 14/07/2021 23:08

It's not a 'rather now than later' thing. Strains change over time, you could get it now then get it again closer to Christmas, quite easily.

I know it's a breeze for some people, but I'm young and healthy (30, no other health problems) and it completely knocked me out - there are parts that still linger 16 months later. You do NOT 'want' to get it at any time.

theSunday · 14/07/2021 23:12

We live in central London and one of our kids had COVID in winter, confirmed positive by test. No-one else of us got it at home, not that I know of at least.

We’ve been using bus and tube all last year.

I’m now double vaccinated and have no issue going into large crowds (football stadium) and live normally.

I’ll keep wearing my mask on public transport but refuse to give it any more thought.

To be honest, I am so fed up with it all.

Hopefully you get the outcome you want Flowers

LaurieFairyCake · 14/07/2021 23:21

I don't 'want' to get it Confused (if there was a guarantee I wouldn't I'd obviously take it)

I want to get it NOW rather than later (as I don't believe I can avoid it without barely going out - I've been really careful)

And I don't think people get it worse the second or third time as we build immunity by having it.

In fact they're giving weekly Covid jabs in a trial to people who have got Long Covid to reduce their symptoms

You can catch it more than once

It can be worse the 2nd or 3rd time

You ‘wanting’ to catch it before Winter is really pointless

LaurieFairyCake · 14/07/2021 23:42

Oh I've gone really far to avoid getting bad Covid and reduce my risk - really really far Grin

I had surgery to lose weight and paid £17k for it (still paying it off obviously) as overweight older people do worse

I'm not really afraid of getting and having Covid, my immune system is normally good - but I would hate to be hospitalised and be a drain on the nhs as I'm older and fatter

I already take vitamin D and multiple other drugs to keep healthy (some related to surgery) - plus I have a pulse oximeter

Patapouf · 14/07/2021 23:42

This would only work if we could only catch it once.

I do agree that the lack of control is scary and the not knowing/fear of the virus seems almost as if it could be worse than just having it and getting it other with.

Hopefully if you're vaccinated you won't catch it at all Daffodil

Kentuki · 14/07/2021 23:47

I am a front line HCP working with multiple patients a day, up to 20, in a windowless unventilated room.
I was a late mask adopter
I live in a surge area
I go shopping
I socialise regularly and as soon as I could when lockdowns eased
I hug
I have two young children and between them their bubbles have closed 9 times since September
And none of us have had it

It’s impossible to catch! I’ve no idea how anyone gets it tbh. Let alone getting it when you want to.

LaurieFairyCake · 14/07/2021 23:50

You've got an amazing immune system Kentuki 👍🏻

You should watch Monday's Panorama on long covid.

10 % of all covid patients develop long covid ( regardless of whether they were vaccinated, or only had mild symptoms) and it can go on for months and be far more unpleasant than the initial bout.

Bargebill19 · 15/07/2021 00:30

You could have been asymptomatic?

LaurieFairyCake · 15/07/2021 00:31

Well it's completely out of our control whether we get long Covid or not - no one has any idea whether they would get sick with it - totally unpredictable 🤷‍♀️

My point is if it's better to catch it now than winter - im sure whatever we do we can't avoid catching Covid forever (asymptomatic or not)

Surely we're all going to get it at some point ?

@koteczek are you insane? You do not want to be taking ivermectin as a prophylatic - have you read the potential side effects on the BNF?

scaevola · 15/07/2021 07:59

till hopefully it mutates into something much less horrid

There is no evolutionary advantage for covid to become less horrid - it is infectious before symptoms begin, so has already moved on. It doesn't matter whether it kills its host quickly or not once it's found its new host.

The evolutionary pressure is to find ways to infect hosts which are immune or partially immune.

It's got a happy hunting ground in a population which is part vaccinated and transmission levels are high.

FrankButchersDickieBow · 15/07/2021 08:03

I wanted to get it when my husband and daughter had it at the same time
Ime recently. When dh tested positive it was pretty easy for him to stay out the way in the spare room, but when dd got it I thought it would be inevitable, so we carried on isolating, took precautions ie different towels own cups etc, but dd felt poorly so got in bed with me for the duration, with me thinking each day, well I must have it now.

I never caught it! Some people just don't.
