Employer not paying dd to isolate

Cherrychocchip · 14/07/2021 14:33

Dd works in a private nursery. Has been sent home to isolate due to a positive case. All staff have been told they won't get paid. Is this right?

Findahouse21 · 14/07/2021 14:35

I think they have to apply for the government funding - when dd tested positive I had to give the code from the NHS email to the manager so that she could share it with the relevant staff

mygrandchildrenrock · 14/07/2021 14:40

Yes it’s legally right but morally wrong.

Bargebill19 · 14/07/2021 14:41

Yea it’s right.

hibbledibble · 14/07/2021 14:44

Are parents still being charged fees? The norm I thought was to still charge parents and pay staff. It would be difficult for those on low wages to survive otherwise.

VeganVeal · 14/07/2021 14:48

Yes that right, although she may be eligible for Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) while you are on sick leave or self-isolating.
Can she use holiday instead?

dementedpixie · 14/07/2021 14:49

She could get Statutory Sick Pay

Justcallmebebes · 14/07/2021 14:52

Yes the same here where I work. No pay at all if forced to isolate. Result of this is we've mostly all deleted our apps and people are coming into work with coughs, colds etc because they can't afford to take 10 days of unpaid leave.

It's outrageous in my opinion and totally counterproductive and we work in an area with sky high rates of the Delta variant

maneandfeathers · 14/07/2021 14:54

Same for us too.
I’ve had to isolate multiple times with no pay!

sirfredfredgeorge · 14/07/2021 14:55

Of course it's right, why would it not be? It's even better for the nursery as they still get to charge full fees for all the kids, PROFIT!

Bargebill19 · 14/07/2021 14:55

Govt.uk

warmfluffytowels · 14/07/2021 15:00

She should get SSP but she won't get paid in full unless her employer chooses to do so.

It's really fucked up how many people are being forced to go without wages because of this.

pinkcircustop · 14/07/2021 15:16

Of course it’s right. Why would they pay her for not working? Confused

Bargebill19 · 14/07/2021 15:18

And this is the reason a lot of people don’t isolate, don’t use the app, don’t do tests etc etc. They can’t afford to be off work.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 14/07/2021 15:25

Where I work plenty of people have had to isolate 3 or 4 times and the only place they have been is work ( its a supermarket). So not close contact for 15 mins and mainly mask wearing. The system seems very flawed, and of course it is unsustainable to pay them full pay every time. The last f

Cherrychocchip · 14/07/2021 15:30

She's only 17. Not been there long. I think they have to refund children's fees. Don't get me wrong I feel for them but it seems very unfair for staff.
Will look into other financial help for her.

Really? You can't imagine why someone might be pissed off at being forced by her employer not to come to work but at the same time they aren't paying her?

It's not the employees choice not toncome to.work, so why should they lose out on their wages?

I work in a supermarket and anyone who has to isolate (either because they tested positive on a routine lateral flow test and are waiting in a PCR test/tested positive again and have to isolate or because track and trace have enforced an isolation) will be paid SSP for their contracted shifts and the company will top that up to their full wage for the first isolation and any subsequent ones up to a certain threshold, at which point there is a clear structure where the payments will reduce to only SSP on a gradual scale (it is almost impossible to reach the end of the scale where an isolation would be 100% unpaid unless you literally isolate for months on end)

Potteringshed · 14/07/2021 15:40

@pinkcircustop

Because otherwise people will be encouraged to not self isolate and come to work because they can't afford to get no pay. This is a massive driver of COVID and the employer is being hugely socially irresponsible doing this, as well as treating their staff poorly on a personal level.
SmidgenofaPigeon · 14/07/2021 15:40

I don’t get paid if I isolate- I’m a nanny so my boss has made it clear I should never isolate as it’ll leave her in the lurch.

As a result I’m in work today, 7 months pregnant with a stinking cold and feeling horrendous.

gamerchick · 14/07/2021 15:43

I don't get paid either. I can use annual leave though if I have to self isolate.

warmfluffytowels · 14/07/2021 15:52

@pinkcircustop

Of course it’s right. Why would they pay her for not working? Confused
Because she can't work as the law says she must isolate at home.

Would you say people off sick shouldn't get sick pay either?

Pinkandpink · 14/07/2021 15:58

I know it’s not the same but I had to take 4 days off work last month when my two primary kids were sent home after being close contacts with a covid case. I’m only min wage, so lost a good Wack of money. Me and my partners income is just above the threshold so we don’t qualify for the isolation grant.

DeathByWalkies · 14/07/2021 16:13

She may get this grant, though unless she's on benefits most people get turned down
www.gov.uk/government/publications/test-and-trace-support-payment-scheme-claiming-financial-support/claiming-financial-support-under-the-test-and-trace-support-payment-scheme

This is precisely why so many people delete the app / leave fake details in pubs / tell their friends not to name them to T&T - they just can't afford to self isolate

careerchangeperhaps · 14/07/2021 16:16

The nursery should be claiming from the government (either furlough or the special SSP just for Covid cases that's available). It won't necessarily be full pay. I hope that they're not claiming and not paying it on. If your DD hasn't worked for them for long or has a zero hours contract or something, she may not be eligible though. Ask her to discuss with her manager.

Nahhh · 14/07/2021 16:28

My partner got a formal warning the other week because he’s had to self isolate three times for a day since Covid began whilst waiting for test results. He’s said if one of us is poorly again he will just have to ignore it.
