Employer not paying dd to isolate

Dd works in a private nursery. Has been sent home to isolate due to a positive case. All staff have been told they won't get paid. Is this right?

@Bargebill19

And this is the reason a lot of people don’t isolate, don’t use the app, don’t do tests etc etc. They can’t afford to be off work.
Yep. I've said this from the start. If people can't afford it, they will simply lie/ not download apps etc. 2 weeks of no pay for us will see us homeless.

Ffs even ssp is impossible to live on.

You can't have it both ways.
Either pay people properly to isolate or expect them to lie or try to get round it.

RozHuntleysLeftHand · 14/07/2021 16:37

I suspect the people who think it's OK have never had to live month to month, with no savings or back up, in a rented house house where they can kick you out.

Literally no one I know can afford to isolate, so they give fake details/ have never had the app.

This does obviously not work to prevent covid, but it's that or just simply not feed their kids or go homeless.

Bargebill19 · 14/07/2021 16:39

And yet millions have been spent on furlough until September 2021 and possibly beyond. … would have been better spent letting people work but paying full rate sick pay to those which needed it.

careerchangeperhaps · 14/07/2021 16:57

@SmidgenofaPigeon

I don’t get paid if I isolate- I’m a nanny so my boss has made it clear I should never isolate as it’ll leave her in the lurch.

As a result I’m in work today, 7 months pregnant with a stinking cold and feeling horrendous.

Have you taken a Covid test? How are you sure it's 'just a cold'? You have symptoms, you should do a PCR test and isolate until the results are back (only takes a few hours where we live). Unless you are a live-in nanny and the whole household is isolating with you for 10 days, you know this is the right thing to do. If the test comes back negative, you don't need to isolate. Hope you feel better soon.
SmidgenofaPigeon · 14/07/2021 17:01

@careerchangeperhaps no, just LFs which aren’t ideal, I tried to get a PCR but none available unless I tick the key worker box as I don’t have a fever or a cough. I’m not live in, DH at home and my boss have also done LFs which are negative, my boss says that’s good enough for her so here I am at work.

GlencoraP · 14/07/2021 17:03

Just tick the box to say you gave symptoms . To ge honest the symptom list is massively out of date and the main symptom if you haven’t jabbed us a runny nose or sneezing .

SmidgenofaPigeon · 14/07/2021 17:05

I have had one jab. I’m guessing I’d have to physically go somewhere to get the PCR as the UGOV website thing just says ‘none available’.

Lulu1919 · 14/07/2021 17:07

I work in private school as a TA we don't get paid if we have the isolate or are off work sick

tigger1001 · 14/07/2021 17:09

@Bargebill19

Totally agree.

It's all very well people being outraged that some won't self isolate but they don't see the other side of not being able to afford to.

I'm lucky I could work from home if I had to self isolate, but my partner can't and he won't get paid. It could be the difference if food on the table or not for some

DeathByWalkies · 15/07/2021 00:37

If I isolated, I'd get nothing - I'm self employed so I wouldn't even get SSP.

I'd have to refund clients, and certain clients might go elsewhere and simply not come back afterwards. If we're talking about some of my larger business clients, that would have a serious long term effect on my business.

And to add insult to injury, I wouldn't even be allowed out to walk the dog so I'd have to shell out for a dog walker every day. He has issues and is not the sort of dog that can be walked by just anyone.

I cannot trust that I'd get the £500 self isolation grant either - I'm not on benefits, most people who aren't on benefits get turned down, and as one of the Excluded who was denied SEISS, furlough and UC despite losing work, I've no faith in the system whatsoever.

So my cost of living would go up, I'd have not one penny in income, and I'd risk a long term detriment to my income. Weirdly, I haven't downloaded the app, and I wouldn't self isolate because it's just not affordable for me.

In years to come analysts will think it was mad that they paid some people to stay at home when they didn't really need to (furlough etc)., but refused to support people like me to self isolate when they really did need to. It's a bizarre set of priorities.

EmeraldShamrock · 15/07/2021 01:04

They need to claim a government payment. Its fairly standard, some companies will pay the statutory rate and claim it back.
DP was the same.

EmeraldShamrock · 15/07/2021 01:05

@DeathByWalkies that is shit. Self employed are entitled to claim in Ireland.

RainbowMum11 · 15/07/2021 01:39

Should get SSP with no waiting (unpaid) days if it's due to covid/isolating

Piratesue · 15/07/2021 06:22

The nursery can claim furlough for her if she qualifies, if she was on payroll by the end of March 2021.
