Am I reckless for going ahead with this holiday?

Due to go on holiday in a couple of days to Jersey for a week, however the amount of cases of covid on the Island have risen quite a bit and there are currently around 1,500 active cases out of a population of around 100,000. It's been on the news that by next week there could be 500 new cases a day. Am I being reckless in still going ahead with the holiday. If you test positive you have to isolate for 14 days, the thought of being stuck isolating in a hotel room for 14 days could give me nightmares.

Anyone got any helpful advice

Forgot to add that we are all double vaccinated

Totally up to you, if you feel the risk of testing positive (and having to isolate) is worth it.

Royalbloo · 13/07/2021 20:49

Not sure what you want from this but you'll either be ok or have to isolate when you come home. I wouldn't go, but it's up to you?!

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 13/07/2021 21:01

Oh no Sad I think that if you really are unhappy with the isolation, I wouldn't risk it. Over 1 in 50 people infected by the time you go... I don't see how you could avoid it tbh!

Unanananana · 13/07/2021 21:03

I wouldn't as I can't WFH so the risk would be too much for me in every way.

Its up to you though. I guess if you catch it and you are vaccinated you have less chance of being very ill.

FrownedUpon · 13/07/2021 21:05

Oh dear, no I wouldn’t be comfortable going with those figures. My neighbour has been double jabbed & is really ill with COVID at the moment (not in hospital though).

greenmacaron · 13/07/2021 21:08

Oh dear, what a shame!

I don’t think I would OP, those numbers are really high, and you’d have no choice but to go to some busy places. And quarantining in a hotel would be awful. I think the worry would spoil the holiday for me even if we didn’t catch it!

HasaDigaEebowai · 13/07/2021 21:09

Can you even quarantine in the hotel. If you tested positive whilst there they may well have no vacancies. My days has just cancelled her holiday with dc for this very reason

HasaDigaEebowai · 13/07/2021 21:11

Fwiw I am double jabbed and have covid symptoms (getting tested tomorrow) . I’m hearing of lots of similar cases

Pootle40 · 13/07/2021 21:17

But you get tested on arrival or do it before you fly to jersey. Depends how much mixing you think you will be doing. I'd go but I'm in Majorca in the moment so not the one to comment!

StrongerOrWeaker · 13/07/2021 21:26

I personally wouldn't but I am very risk averse!

monthsdays · 13/07/2021 21:27

Yes we get tested on arrival, the hotel must have some emergency procedures in place if someone tested positive and has to isolate.

MrsDThomas · 13/07/2021 21:27

I would go. Ive had both vaccines snd this is the very reason. To live life.

MrsSkylerWhite · 13/07/2021 21:28

Self-catering? Would think that was fine. Hotel stay would give me pause for thought atm.

DinosaurDiana · 13/07/2021 21:29

I’m not going anywhere because I just don’t think it’s worth it this year, so I’d say don’t go. But it’s up to you.

HasaDigaEebowai · 13/07/2021 21:29

the hotel must have some emergency procedures in place if someone tested positive and has to isolate

It isn’t their problem. They will have other guests arriving who have booked that room

monthsdays · 13/07/2021 21:40

It will be a hotel stay, if we end up in the unfortunate position of having to self-isolate I have a book I'm bringing with me to read and there will be a T.V in the room. I'm thinking of bringing the I Pad with me so that we can watch Netflix but it certainly wouldn't be a holiday.

I would be wary. We went in beg Oct. Pre vaccines, all were tested on arrival. We were not allowed to use the hotel spa until we had negative test. Two days later we both got phone calls within seconds of each other saying someone on our flight tested positive. We had to isolate in our room ( no real view) for either 14 days (couldn't afford) it was my birthday present from kids. They paid hotel for the week . We were allowed to leave on approved flights next morning and they checked by text for 14 days to see if we were ill or well.
The person was at the opposite end of the plane and we were boared different entrances so despite this we still had to in our case find £500 for flights home.

The vaccine may well have changed things. Are only vaccinated allowed to travel?
Find out as much information as you can before you make any decisions.
We still would travel again

monthsdays · 13/07/2021 21:55

Those who are not double vaccinated have to self isolate until their negative test result on arrival comes back, whereas those who are fully vaccinated don't have to isolate upon arrival but still need to be tested.

Things like going to the beach I wonder how safe it is, the weather forecast is looking really nice but what if the beach is packed.

HasaDigaEebowai · 14/07/2021 06:53

At the end of the day only you can decide. If it was me I’d want to speak to the hotel to find out if they would potentially have rooms available for an extended stay and the cost. I’d want to know how they would deal with things like food. I’d not do it with kids.

catfunk · 14/07/2021 07:22

It would depend on 2 things for me

  1. How likely are you to be able to relax and enjoy yourself when out and about
  2. Would you happily isolate for 10 days if needed without it ruining your experience

If the answers are no then I'd probably prefer to book a self catering accom/ cabin in the uk tbh.

It's so shit isn't it.

Baggiegirl · 14/07/2021 08:15

Can't speak for Jersey but we're in Malta at the moment and I feel safer than I have all year. UK airports are still quiet. Our flight was less than half full. The holiday resorts are still relatively quiet and most importantly people are following the rules. I'd be a lot more worried in a crowded British resort. As my husband was shielding we have been ultra careful throughout and I was unsure if we were making the right decision but we're so glad we did. Not sure how helpful this is with your decision but hope it's another perspective for you to consider

Elys3 · 14/07/2021 08:30

It doesn’t sound very relaxing - if you think the thought of it will put you on edge it won’t be much of a holiday.

UmamiMammy · 14/07/2021 08:42

I wouldn't feel comfortable flying to Jersy and staying in a hotel at the moment, the risk of having to isolate would put me off.
I'm off on holiday tomorrow..........staying in an apartment in a quiet part of Devon right on the beach. I'm comfortable going self-catering to a quiet spot and having shopping delivered, we will be avoiding crowded places and hopefully enjoying the beach and nice walks.
