3 year old stomach hurting and vomiting

First time mum, which may be quite obvious.
Dd started vomiting this afternoon, proper vomit, she never has before, saying her tummy is hurting. What do you do, watch and wait, call the doctors? Is this fairly normal? Temperature is normal. She’s pale and quite listless, has been like this once before but no stomachs ache and only spit up type sick (sorry tmi)

Is she keeping fluid down? Do you think it's something she's eaten? If you are worried there's no harm in giving your GPs a ring and just asking their advice? I expect they'll say to keep an eye for next 24hrs but if it gets worse to take her in.x

MrsMonkeyBear · 13/07/2021 16:19

Just watch, wait and hydrate. Small sips of water or dioralyte frequently. Keep an eye on wees, if there's nothing for 12 hours then seek medical advice.

Try to get a dose of calpol into them too, it will ease the tummy ache.

If no better in 24 hrs call docs.

Rainallnight · 13/07/2021 16:21

No harm in calling GP. Funnily enough, this has happened to DD (5) twice recently and both times it was a UTI. I’d never have associated tummy pain and vomiting with this so there’s something to think about.

Moandtee · 13/07/2021 16:31

The last time this happened but no stomach complaints or real sick, we still called the doctor to come out as she was so pale and listless. She was fine and felt better later that day, so I’m probably best just waiting.
Might sound ridiculous, but she ate too much cheese yesterday, doesn’t normally have problems with cheese but she ate a few babybels for lunch with me and then asked dp for some twice (he hadn’t realised she’d had so much) could it be that?

Thanks everyone, appreciate it

@Monsteres She’s just had her first proper bit of water, so will see 😬

So long as she can keep water down I wouldn't be too worried, would think it's a bit too long since the cheese but could be? Always worth getting some diarolyte or similar in too to help with peeking her up a bit, if she can keep fluid down. If she can't keep any water down I'd give the GP a ring x

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 13/07/2021 16:38

Lots of kids that age will say they have a sore stomach but they actually mean they feel sick. Keep an eye on her, keep her hydrated.

VestaTilley · 13/07/2021 16:40

Call 111 and follow their advice. Ring your own GP also and see what they say.

Make sure she drinks plenty of water and see if she can keep down something plain like bread.

Moandtee · 13/07/2021 17:31

@Monsteres She was sick again after the water, maybe 15 or so minutes later, just liquid, what does this mean?

OP posts:
Bagamoyo1 · 13/07/2021 17:34

She’s probably got a tummy bug. Sips of water. Or ice lollies. Observe, and if she doesn’t keep any liquids down in the next couple of hours then speak to 111.

rainyskylight · 13/07/2021 17:36

Sounds like a tummy bug. Her tummy will hurt if she’s been throwing up (from the force of it). Keep her on sips of water and dry bread if she can take it. Too much liquid and she may just throw it up again. Monitor, wait and see. If she gets a temperature or seems not herself (out of it), then reassess.

Bellend101 · 13/07/2021 17:38

If water won't stay down my first thought would be gastroenteritis. Any diarrhoea? What has she eaten today? Has she had any toys in her mouth? Is she good at hand hygiene? Definitely keep going with the water, little sips as opposed to big gulps.

BashandWhizz · 13/07/2021 17:41

Might be worth doing a LFT for Covid as vomiting/upset tummies can be a sign in little ones . Probably just a bit of a bug though

Monsteres · 13/07/2021 17:42

I'd give your GP a ring quick xx

This. It can present in young children this way.
Moandtee · 13/07/2021 18:37

@Bellend101 No diarrhoea yet, in fact, she didn’t poo yesterday (generally does every day) did today but a bit hard
When she was sick before, there was nothing there, just that awful making you sick thing with nothing to give 🥲
She was absolutely fine before her nap, full of energy and v happy all morning.
She’s eaten toast and melon for breakfast, apple, cheese, cucumber, cherry tomatoes & rice cake for lunch and nothing since

@BashandWhizz But little ones don’t get very sick from it, right?

I don’t think so OP, it doesn’t hurt to be safe but it does sound like it’s probably a nasty little tummy bug. I’d prep her bed with multiple layers (waterproof sheet, sheet, towels etc) for tonight so you can strip them off if she gets sick on them and remember the BRAT diet when she can start eating again - banana, rice, apple and toast. Good luck!

Stardust91 · 13/07/2021 19:16

Does your little one go to nursery? If yes you can always phone them tomorrow and check if anyone else is sick just so you can rule out food poisoning or even covid.

FWIW, quite recently my toddler started throwing up out of the blue one Saturday evening (he had gone to nursery on Thursday and Friday that week, I found out later they had a sickness bug outbreak!). He was like that on and off for about 4 hours, then he fell asleep out of exhaustion around midnight. He drank water in between episodes but couldn't keep it down for long.

Thankfully in our case he wasn't sick during the night but next day after eating and drinking something for breakfast he was sick again and then he was fine all day until he was sick again on Monday morning! Just to add he did eat a bit and drank water during those days.

I would advise not to give water straight away after a sick episode. Wait 20 min or so for stomach to settle and only give a small amount at a time. We also got some dioralyte from the pharmacy to help with rehydration.
Give very bland food and avoid any dairy, milk included for the next few days. We gave him milk 24 hrs after his last sickness episode and he switched to diarrhea!

Also if it's a sickness bug just prepare for the possibility of the rest of the family getting it. We all did and I am glad I sent DH out to buy some rice, tinned chicken soup, plain crackers and lucozade before our turn came!

Hope she feels better soon.

ohfourfoxache · 13/07/2021 19:19

Give her Smart water - it has loads of electrolytes (even more than Dioralyte IIRC and far easier to drink)

If need be, use a calpol stick and start with 5mls every 10-15 minutes. If she tolerates it then increase the frequency but don’t overdo it - the important thing is that it stays down, the speed isn’t important for now

ohfourfoxache · 13/07/2021 19:20

But little ones don’t get very sick from it, right?

That’s the problem….we don’t know

TheFairyCaravan · 13/07/2021 19:24

You need to make sure she has sips of water every 5 minutes or so. If she gulps it down in one she is more likely to bring it back. Her stomach will hurt, she’s probably got cramps and because of the force of being sick.

I’d watch and wait. Make sure you’re cleaning with a bleach based spray to minimise the risk of if spreading through the house if it’s something like Norovirus.

BashandWhizz · 13/07/2021 19:32

I don't think little ones get as poorly but one of the symptoms in the young ones is an upset tummy, especially with the Delta variant.

Marmite27 · 13/07/2021 19:33

Vomiting and diarrhoea are symptoms for the delta variant. She needs a PCR test.
