To think acupuncture is pointless?

It pains me to say I've been acupunctured today and lying there on the table with pins in my face for 20 minutes (then parting with 50 quid) all I could think was, god I am a gullible fool.

I'm not trying to needle anyone but really, what is the point?

Yes agreed it’s nonsense. Went to see a ‘top’ fertility practitioner. During my 1st round of IvF. My left ovary wasn’t responding well and I was told acupuncture would help. It didn’t! Then told to try naturally with acupuncture for 6 months. Did that didn’t get pregnant. Apparently acupuncture proven to help pre and post transfer of embryo - again no success on 2 transfers. A friend went to another ‘top’ acupuncturist for fertility for nearly 2 years. Gave up and quit going and got pregnant naturally 6 months later!

Also got acupuncture for my back pain. Did nothing. Spent so much money on it for nothing!

I think I would have felt better about it if the practitioner had explained what she was doing or tell me about people with similar conditions she had helped

I reckon this would hinder the effectiveness of your treatments. Can you find someone else? Someone you trust?
I live in a big city so I'm sure I could find someone else. Any recommendations in terms of what I should be looking for?

It's actually genuinely scientifically proven hence why it is available on the NHS for some things.

Properly qualified practitioners have to study for a four year degree.
@beastlyslumber I got too excited by the pun in the first answer (had only read title) so I’ve only just seen yours! Well done. Grin

I’m very easily pleased.
I do love a pun myself, but I know they get under some people's skin Grin

It's so gutting to spend that much money for nothing - I hope you're doing okay though.

So sorry to hear that Forever, I struggled with infertility and had to have treatment so I have a sense of how distressing it is. Acupuncture does work well for quite a lot of people, as does hypnotherapy for fertility. Unfortunately, just as with pharmaceuticals and surgery, it’s not a universal cure.

TeddyBearsPicnic89 · 12/07/2021 19:57

Sorry to hijack, but has anyone ever used acupuncture for tmjd? It's been recommended but I'm slightly wary of it making things worse

TheFoundations · 12/07/2021 19:58

I'm a shiatsu practitioner, so, not an acupuncture expert, but I'd go via

acupuncture.org.uk/find-an-acupuncturist/

And find someone who you click with. It's important that they understand you and what you need. It's not 'facts and figures' like western medicine - the better your practitioner understands you, the better interpretation they'll make of what's causing your symptoms.

@Redannie118

Im on many many chronuc illness boards , do you want to know how many mondern prescription drugs are totally useless and do not work at all as pain relief for millions of people? Are they all woo and we are being fleeced?
You're asking the wrong person. I don't take any pharmaceutical drugs for several reasons, including that yes, I do think some of them are just ripping people off, and often causing additional harms, too.

Btw, I never said acupuncture was 'woo'. I said it was 'pointless' - which was partly because I thought I was being funny/punny and partly because I felt ripped off.

Would you also say then, by the same token, that western medicine is nonsense?
Redbottle · 12/07/2021 20:02

It worked immediately for my very sceptical DH. He only tried it because his colleague was retraining and needed a guinea pig.

Not sure about helping fertility or having them in your face but it bloody works on muscles that have tensed up beyond all control.

I speak from experience and I felt exactly the same skepticism as I lay there like a hedgehog!

I was going to make a pun about Chinese medicine, but I thought that might be qi-ting.

Yeah, you're welcome, @beastlyslumber, it's always helpful to use the yin-ternet for stuff like this.

beastlyslumber · 12/07/2021 20:13

I was offered it on the NHS, but as the therapist was about to start the first treatment she threw a strop and said there was no point if I wasn't going to believe in it.

OMG! Needles to say, you didn't go back!

Someone you click with? Like a chiropracter? Grin

Excellent punning here. I must say, I'm not sure now whether to be more complemetary to @Bluetrews25 or OP Wink

Yes. Did nothing for me. Same when I had it for my back. There was once it made me feel quite spacey, which was nice, but no effect on the pain.

beastlyslumber · 12/07/2021 20:30

I’ve found acupuncture really helpful during pregnancy with keeping my body temperature from going too low. Been having it recently for msk reasons and it’s been helpful.
