To have fed her DC unwashed strawberries?

Neighbour will probably see this. Not sure I care. Perhaps she will see how silly she is!

She was desperate for someone to have her DD and I said I would, no worries, all fine.

Her DD shared a box of strawberries with DS today and long story short, she's picked her DC and her DC has told her this.

I have received a text saying ''Hi, thanks again for having Kate. Please can I ask though, next time wash the strawberries before giving them to her? They are dangerous if not washed properly and she could become so unwell. Would you really want that?''

I haven't replied and won't be. AIBU to have not washed them?! Would if I was at home but it was actually just a quick snack shared out

Seriously some absolute fuckwits. I'm glad you think healthy people dying is a laughing matter.

Wtf is wrong with some people.

Comedycook · 12/07/2021 18:37

Worst food poisoning I ever got was from unwashed spinach

Dogoodfeelgood · 12/07/2021 18:37

She must be highly anxious as a person/have a phobia of germs. I can’t think of any other reason to message something like that. I wash most fruit but have definitely not bothered on occasion, eg when I buy on the way somewhere or am rushing or lazy - but would never in a million years be bothered about my child having some unwashed strawberries and definitely wouldn’t text if I was.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 12/07/2021 18:38

@Comedycook

I had a quick google about washing fruit and veg in vinegar and it does seem to have an effect
That's for bugs. But then you are losing the bonus protein 😁
WhatIsThisPlease · 12/07/2021 18:38

Next time she asks tell her you're too busy washing your strawberries.

And I've never washed a strawberry in my life. My DC and me are still here to tell the tale!

ChargingBuck · 12/07/2021 18:39

There must be a reason why it says "wash before use " on the box.

There is, @MarsandPluto.
It's to pay lip service, & thereby cover the supplier's arse, legally.

Running water over some soft fruit isn't going to magically rid it of pathogens.

billy1966 · 12/07/2021 18:40

@Arsebucket

It never ceases to amaze me how ungrateful and how rude people can be.
This.

NEVER again.

And like a lot of people Indo rinse fruit, but before I or anyone I know would say that.

Extraordinarily rude.

WhyTheEffNot · 12/07/2021 18:41

I never wash fruit or veg from supermarket, pick your own or my back garden, didn’t realise it was so dangerous Confused

ItWorriesMeThisKindofThing · 12/07/2021 18:42

Wasn’t sure what to think about this and having googled, I found this helpful www.self.com/story/how-gross-is-it-to-not-wash-produce

Am now happy to carry on washing fruit under running water! And would give neighbour benefit of doubt and assume she must know someone who has had E. coli.

Bingomangoes · 12/07/2021 18:42

I knew a mum like this, "please can you have my DD at short notice (again) you'll be doing me a huge favour but this time can you make sure XYZ happens". Her daughter is lovely but I haven't had her here for around 3yrs now despite her being a good friend of my dd's it just became far too complicated.

coodawoodashooda · 12/07/2021 18:42

Never, ever look after her kid again.

You'll probably be fine most of the time. But I ate spinach I thought has been washed and could taste grit and soil in it....I was so ill. People think you only get food poisoning from meat or fish but you can get it from fruit and veg.
TSSDNCOP · 12/07/2021 18:44

"Would you want that?"

The only reply is

"You'd be amazed at just how few shits I could give"

BSideBaby · 12/07/2021 18:44

I always wash strawberries (and all other fruit and veg) because they're likely to be covered in pesticides, but I definitely wouldn't have said anything if I was your neighbour OP. How rude of her.

Willyoujustbequiet · 12/07/2021 18:45

www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/how-to-wash-fruit-and-vegetables/

There's a nhs link explaining. I've tried my best but I need to step away as this is too triggering. I'm muting this now.

It's really basic hygiene people. Please read up on it if you want to protect those you love. For those who took the piss I sincerely hope you never have to bury a young family member due to your own ignorance.

Nononsense2 · 12/07/2021 18:45

I always wash strawberries because they are full of pesticides but I wouldn't say anything to someone who was kind enough to mind my dc unless dc got really sick after eating them.

gluteustothemaximus · 12/07/2021 18:46

I always wash fruit. I get annoyed with DH if he doesn't.

However. I would never ever write a text like that to a neighbour doing a favour for me.

I would think, ho hum, chances are child will be fine, and has probably eaten worse. If I was really really stressed about it, then I wouldn't use them for babysitting again.

I had a sister in law who didn't believe in use by dates. Regularly had stomach upsets etc, kids picked shit off the floor (literal shit on one occasion) and said it was good for kids systems to get used to dirt. Whilst there is some method in her madness, she was never an option for child care, and our values don't align. My kids do not pick food up off the floor.

One time she was making a cake, her child grabbed all the chocolate chips and shoved them in his mouth, she got so annoyed and mad at him and made him spit them out back in to the cake mixture.

So whilst the chances of getting ill over someone spitting in the food was unlikely, it's the principle of it. We don't spit in food, right? But she thought I was mad refusing a cake.

Anyway, back to strawberries. That text was bizarre.

Mamanyt · 12/07/2021 18:48

While washing them is probably a good idea, I've been eating fruit from the cart for about 68 years now. Granted, my Home Health Care nurse freaked out a bit today because she could not get a reading on my blood pressure, try as she might, but I do appear to still be alive. I seriously doubt anything will come of it. Goodness, I used to have a wild strawberry patch in my backyard, and would often pick and eat them right off the plant! I've even shucked and eaten corn raw, hot from the August sun.

Minger.

Yes, you should wash produce before eating it. Especially in a pandemic. Those strawberries could have been sprayed with manure and God knows how many people have touched them on their journey to your shop - and then sneezed on them in the shop, and you've just fed them to kids.

SapphireSeptember · 12/07/2021 18:50

I'm sure she'll survive. I eat blackberries I pick off bushes, I always figure they've been washed by the rain.

Mrgrinch · 12/07/2021 18:50

I'd probably just reply - "you ungrateful cow".

321zyx · 12/07/2021 18:52

I don't wash any fruit or veg!

Surely you spat it out when you tasted grit and soil? And you'd definitely be able to see it before you put it in your mouth.

ChargingBuck · 12/07/2021 18:53

@GoodbyePorpoiseSpit

One of my favourite Wimbledon traditions is a lovely bowl of raw chicken and cream.
Grin Grin Grin

I prefer the raw chicken & cream served at The Fat Duck.

It's guaranteed to be prepped by a series of sous-chefs kept in a rotating state of diarrhea, but the sommelier brings a bowl of cold water to your table, so you can waft it about underwater for a bit before tucking in.
