To think she did the best she could?

Just had a friend on the phone in an absolute flap because of something she did last night.

As she described it to me:
She drove without insurance. She got a taxi to pick her new used car up from a dealer on an industrial estate. Dealer closed at 3, she got there for about 2:40 due to work. By the time she realised she hadn't switched the insurance over, the dealer was closed. She didn't have a phone on her (left it at work in the rush) and nowhere was open so she could find a phone to ring anyone. So she was basically stranded.

So she drove home (a 40 minute trip)

She's absolutely convinced that the police are going to bash down her door and drag her off to jail. Not sure what else to say to her (she has form for both being forgetful and a drama queen)

I swear this isn't a reverse or me!

She shouldn't have done it. But I doubt anything will happen

PurpleDaisies · 12/07/2021 17:10

She will most likely get away with it. She was really lucky not to get in an accident.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 12/07/2021 17:10

I doubt anything will happen but I'm really surprised the dealership let her drive away without seeing valid insurance. Every car we've ever bought hasn't been released until proof of insurance

MaxwellsChocolate · 12/07/2021 17:10

It’ll be fine. She doesn’t need to give it a second thought.

Can you make some sense of this?

She got a taxi, so wasn't driving. She collected the car and the dealer then closed? Why could she not call her insured company?

BabyMama27 · 12/07/2021 17:12

Not really a big deal to be honest. It was a bit silly, but it's not like she was drink driving, nor does she do this type of thing all the time by the sounds of it. It was a one-off.

I've known people to do way worse things, tell her she'll be fine and to stop worrying. Not really sure what she expects you to do about it lol

Nohomemadecandles · 12/07/2021 17:12

Unless the police have a time machine, they can't do much now!

MaxwellsChocolate · 12/07/2021 17:13

I drove around without insurance without realising (the company I had used were incompetent). I got pulled, told I didn’t have insurance (news to me) police let me phone provider as I showed them the emails I had I had and I sorted it out there and then. If I hadn’t have been pulled over, I wouldn’t have known and I’d been driving around for three weeks by that point!

I was thinking about that but the last two cars I've bought (from different places) I've never been asked. I guess some places just assume that you have everything in place.

I thought most cars from dealers came with 7 days insurance on the dealers cover. It's basic but enough in case something happens.

ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 12/07/2021 17:14

She shouldn't have done it, no. But no accidents, she's home now. So long as she sorts insurance asap she'll be fine.

trevorandsimon · 12/07/2021 17:14

We got a letter from the police the other day saying our car isnt insured and could we do something about it! When we checked , it lapsed in April, hadn't auto renewed as we thought and this was the end of June!

Justcallmebebes · 12/07/2021 17:14

It will be fine and I'm pretty sure she wouldn't be dragged off to jail even if she had been caught

If you read the OP it states she’d forgotten her phone so unable to use that. Obviously as the dealership was closed, she couldn’t use theirs.

Taxi dropped her off and left. She didn't have a phone on her and nowhere was open leaving her stuck with the (uninsured) car her only option.

Okay his. Sometimes it’s just a 24 hour temp cover.

Ok: I missed it. Apologies.

Sorry I totally missed the bit about the phone; no wonder I couldn't make sense of it Grin

Nothing is going to happen, had she been in an accident that would be different, but she is home now so I wouldn't be worrying too much about repercussions.

Boulshired · 12/07/2021 17:18

My last car came with 24 hour insurance from the dealership. They said they do this will all their cars. I had my own insurance anyway.

It's not the dealers responsibility to check that the buyer has insurance nor a driving licence. The moment the money has transferred it is hers to do as she pleases.

Did she have cover on another vehicle on her old insurance, if so (and providing the dealer insured it on MID which they should do if not brand new) she would have been covered anyway

Dixiechickonhols · 12/07/2021 17:20

Lots of cars come with 7 days temp cover from dealer. She was probably also insured 3rd party via her existing policy to drive any car. Nothing will come of it.

Sundancerintherain · 12/07/2021 17:21

As others have said the dealer will have " one journey home" cover on their trade insurance.

ObviousNameChage · 12/07/2021 17:22

She shouldn't have done it. And tbh she did have some options(not necessarily easy) if she was really determined.

However, nothing happened , no accidents, not stopped by police etc so she'll be fine and is just being a drama queen.

If she can't handle the stress of fucking up, she should be a tad more organised.

Thekormachameleon · 12/07/2021 17:23

If she had existing insurance on her old car then she most likely will be insured to drive over vehicles, albeit 3rd party

Kinneddar · 12/07/2021 17:23

She's lucky nothing happened on her way home but since it didn't how does she think the Police are going to know she drove uninsured?

Chances are if she had insurance on her old car it might cover her driving other vehicles in which case she was actually covered

One way or another it's done now & not worth giving another thought to
