To think she did the best she could?

Just had a friend on the phone in an absolute flap because of something she did last night.

As she described it to me:
She drove without insurance. She got a taxi to pick her new used car up from a dealer on an industrial estate. Dealer closed at 3, she got there for about 2:40 due to work. By the time she realised she hadn't switched the insurance over, the dealer was closed. She didn't have a phone on her (left it at work in the rush) and nowhere was open so she could find a phone to ring anyone. So she was basically stranded.

So she drove home (a 40 minute trip)

She's absolutely convinced that the police are going to bash down her door and drag her off to jail. Not sure what else to say to her (she has form for both being forgetful and a drama queen)

I swear this isn't a reverse or me!

I've never had insurance offered by the dealer. Then again my most expensive car was £4k so maybe it comes with the more expensive ones 🤣

I've sent her the link to this thread!

@Sundancerintherain

As others have said the dealer will have " one journey home" cover on their trade insurance.
Please do no assume this. Dealers do not have this as standard, if a dealer has this they will let you know.
QuestionableMouse · 12/07/2021 17:26

@ObviousNameChage

She shouldn't have done it. And tbh she did have some options(not necessarily easy) if she was really determined.

However, nothing happened , no accidents,not stopped by police etc so she'll be fine and is just being a drama queen.

If she can't handle the stress of fucking up, she should be a tad more organised.

Curious what other options you came up with? It's a dinky little trading estate that's nowhere near a supermarket or anything that would likely be open. (I had a look on the map 🤣)

audweb · 12/07/2021 17:27

Unless she was caught on the way home nothing will happen now.

Essentialgarage · 12/07/2021 17:28

@Thekormachameleon

If she had existing insurance on her old car then she most likely will be insured to drive over vehicles, albeit 3rd party
Just to clarify only if the vehicle is insured by the garage. Under the vast majority of insurances you can only drive another car on third party if that car is insured by someone else. Usually it would be insured by the garage until the end of the day but people shouldn't rely on that.
lazyarse123 · 12/07/2021 17:39

Had she been stopped on the way home she wouldhave been done at the time. So if she gets covered now it will be fine.
We have full ins on our car and dh is covered to drive other vehicles but i'm not.

QuestionableMouse · 12/07/2021 17:42

I have third party cover to drive other vehicles but iirc I had to add it on- it didn't come as standard.

Keep trying to think what I'd have done in the same situation but I'm honestly not sure. Would maybe have driven around the trading estate to see if anywhere was open and would let me make a phone call.

ObviousNameChage · 12/07/2021 17:52

Leave the car behind,lock and walk (a very long way by your description) until the first signs of civilisation. Then catch a bus, hail a cab,try and call one etc. It's not easy and a total hassle but possible.

callmeadoctor · 12/07/2021 17:52

Mmmm so she was at a dealers that was actually open when she picked up the car, but she only realised she had no insurance when they locked the door behind her!!!!........................................................

IAmAWomanNotACis · 12/07/2021 18:04

Who the hell is in and out of a dealership when getting a new car in 10 minutes? Normally it takes much longer to finalise the sale, they show you around the car, talk you through the paperwork, warranty and GAP insurance options, check you have insurance

How the heck did she not think to get insurance sorted before collecting the car?

Are we to also assume that she also drove it off with no road fund licence?

Hopefully the vendor didn't sell it with no MOT...

-You're she's a tit, who seems to have got away with it. Don't do it again.

QuestionableMouse · 12/07/2021 18:05

Why the mmmm?

OP posts:
TheGenealogist · 12/07/2021 18:06

@PurpleDaisies

She will most likely get away with it. She was really lucky not to get in an accident.
Well, no.

Most people drive for months or years without ever having an accident.

She was lucky not to have driven past a police car or ANPR unit which pinged her car as having no insurance.

IAmAWomanNotACis · 12/07/2021 18:07

As others have said, 3rd party insurance for driving other cars is only effective if the other car is insured. Dealerships have their own insurance that covers test drives, but not for a vehicle that is no longer theirs being driven away!

Absolutely 100% not me. I've had my current car for three years and I have no plans to change it.

If I could figure out a way to prove that I would happily.

worktrip · 12/07/2021 18:16

My dealer included a 24 hour insurance cover with the price of the car. Maybe hers did the same?

QuestionableMouse · 12/07/2021 18:22

@IAmAWomanNotACis

Here's my clocks for last night. Do you believe it wasn't me now? Actually mildly peeved that you'd assume I was lying.

Completely irrelevant but what in earth is that picture

Hopdathelf · 12/07/2021 18:41

What difference does it make that the dealer was closed? They wouldn’t have sorted her insurance out. That’s a job for her.

toastantea · 12/07/2021 18:41

Me usually tbh.

Normally it takes much longer to finalise the sale, they show you around the car, talk you through the paperwork, warranty and GAP insurance options, check you have insurance

I have only ever paid, signed and taken the key

How the heck did she not think to get insurance sorted before collecting the car?

She made a mistake

Are we to also assume that she also drove it off with no road fund licence?

Why are we assuming that?

Hopefully the vendor didn't sell it with no MOT...

More weird assumptions

toastantea · 12/07/2021 18:42

So she could use the phone

Hopdathelf · 12/07/2021 18:46

Why would she assume the dealer would let her use the phone? What if the only one they had was in a back office?

Imnothereforthedrama · 12/07/2021 18:50

You usually get temporary insurance so you can Drive home is she sure she didn’t get that? Also if she was that worried she could of rang her insurance before she drove off .
Honestly it’s done now nothing to be done , the police won’t call round, if she’d had a accident then it’d be a different story .
I remember a few years ago I gave my insurance wrong reg ( typo) so was driving round unbeknown a few weeks without insurance .

toastantea · 12/07/2021 19:07

@Hopdathelf

Oh for goodness sake. Maybe it was. Maybe they had phones all over the place and still would not let her use it. It's not remotely unreasonable to ask to use a phone if you get caught out through. Let's not pretend it is.

WindyWindsor · 12/07/2021 19:22

This is only applies if the other vehicle is insured.

If she was unlucky enough to be picked up on an ANPR camera and she's got a clean record then she might face some trouble with a fine and points. More likely though that nothing caught her and she's fine.

Hopdathelf · 12/07/2021 19:39

I don’t drive so it’s a genuine question. Would a dealer really allow someone to phone and arrange insurance from their own phones? IKEA wouldn’t let you into the office to arrange a man and van to pick up.
