AIBU to want a quiet washing machine that doesn't take days to finish a wash?

My (loud and annoying) washer is on its way out. After a tough life fighting sin and stains from animals, children, sportsmen and soldiers, it now struggles to get dirt or soap out of anything.

I'm searching for a quiet washer that will do a normal wash and get things clean in a reasonably short time.

Is this not the definition of the hot-potato of the washing-machine world? I thought there would be queues of me looking for this very item but research so far suggests that I am alone and unreasonable.

-I can look for price (surprisingly varied)
-I can look for colour
-I can search for sound ratings (72dec is good apparently) but not on all machines.
-There does not seem to be any kind of fair rating on how long a wash takes though. (Some sneakily offer an amazing 15 min wash ... but for a dolls-house-load and they avoid mentioning that it takes 5 hours for a normal one.)

Am I unreasonable to seek such a wondermachine and, more importantly, has anyone found one?

This thread is quite old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best washing machine page with lots of great options loved by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

I have a Samsung

The 'daily wash' cycle is 1:03, it's quiet whilst it's running but then it does play Schubert at the end of the cycle. I've never noticed much difference in cleaning between that and the long cycles.

I believe the tune can be turned off but I don't mind it so I've never bothered looking for it.

Mines nearly 5 years old and still going strong, it often does 2-3 washes a day. It's absolutely abused as well with labourers clothes.

EmeraldShamrock · 12/07/2021 17:20

I cannot recommend the Samsung wm highly enough.

Maverick66 · 12/07/2021 17:27

I bought Samsung

A because it is quiet and
B because it came with good guarantee.

Unfortunately I don't rate it for washing.
and wouldn't recommend it.

I love my Siemens washing machine. It has a huge range of cycle options and is very quiet. It also takes an 8kg load which makes a big difference.

We do a lot of washing in our house so a good machine is really important for us.

markmichelle · 12/07/2021 17:30

The noise from the motor on our LG is fairly quiet. But the vibration it causes at some parts in the cycle is awful and it moves across the kitchen a few inches each time.
There must be an engineering answer.
Do I remember concrete blocks in a machine years ago?

HelebethH · 12/07/2021 17:44

I have a Hoover DYN8164 and it has
30 min 40/30/20 deg wash
14 min 30/20 deg was - great for quuick freshen up
Daily wash is 40/60 deg and 59 mins
Several other programmes, but not so many you need a degree in instruction manual decyphering to operate it.
Has dealt with toddler stained clothes, emergency services uniforms, sick grandchildrens bedding and everything else inbetween. Ive had it years and my daughter has bought the more up to date model.
I think there are probably more modern quieter Hoover models but it has been a great machine.

MissConductUS · 12/07/2021 17:58

@BuddhaAtSea, it depends on the model. Google "stop end of cycle alert Miele model XXXX" . You'll find videos like this one:

My LG is quiet and doesn't move. It takes a large load and you can adjust temperatures on each cycle

ViciousJackdaw · 12/07/2021 18:03

I've recently bought a Haier and it's so quiet. Very easy to keep clean too. Would recommend.

TotorosCatBus · 12/07/2021 18:05

You can download the instruction manual from the manufacturer's website if you want to know the stats like noise level beforehand.

1WayOrAnother2 · 12/07/2021 18:06

Thank-you - these reviews are interesting and helpful.

Am I alone in not finding a long list of programmes to be very useful?

We have always ended up using a hot(ish) wash or a cool wash but not any of the rest of the list.

I got a beko 9kg which I use twice daily and seems to meet your requirements

1WayOrAnother2 · 12/07/2021 20:32

The Beko looks good but is just a few Dcb higher than I'd like. (We have to live and work alongside the machine and have really suffered with the noise.)

@ViciousJackdaw which one do you have - and how long does a quick but full wash take?

cansu · 12/07/2021 20:35

I have a fairly bog standard mid range washer that does a decent 40 degree 1200 spin 38 min wash. I use it for virtually everything.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 12/07/2021 20:36

We have a Miele , just replaced one that was 20 years old. I hate all the bells and whistles but it has a 20 min wash which I love, really cleans well.

BackforGood · 12/07/2021 20:56

YOu are not alone in your requirements list at all.

thanks to all the recommendations - I'm going to put this on my 'Watch' list.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 12/07/2021 20:57

Yeah I certainly don't use the really long programmes. Who has three hours to spare for one load when you have to do four? I use mostly the 1hr programme on 30 or 40 degrees.

Mrstamborineman · 12/07/2021 20:57

LG direct drive, quick options safe so much time. Last one lasted 10 years.

Sindragosan · 12/07/2021 21:48

Hotpoint, very quiet, good washing, but does take 3-4 hours for a full load. Wool wash and partial loads can be done quicker.

Ericaequites · 12/07/2021 22:09

Check your water pressure if your washer is slower than posted speeds. When my well filter is clogged, cycles take much longer to fill, slowing the process.

Throughabushbackwards · 12/07/2021 22:14

We upgraded to a higher end Samsung after going through several cheap machines in a few years. It's the best W/M I've ever used. It's quiet (apart from the little song it sings when it's finished) and has a very short quick wash (18min from memory).

1WayOrAnother2 · 13/07/2021 13:52

Going through all these ideas steadily - thanks.

I have called up instruction manuels but find that manufacturers are cagey about wash times.

Haier seem to be the quietest (67 decibel spin). Other 'quiet' ones seem to manage 72 dcb) Some are in the 80s!

I'm keen to know whether which Haier machines have a quick (normal load) wash or whether they only offer the mini-load 15 minute one as their 'quick wash'.

@FoofOfTheWalkingDead

I am with you OP. Our Bosch is on its last legs. It literally skitters across the floor on the spin cycle and sounds like a herd of elephants for 3 hours. Not to mention the incessant beeping when the load is finished.

We were recently at a self-catering cottage on holiday that had a HotPoint washing machine. It had a digital display with options for the length of cycle, temperature and spin speed. It was also very quiet. I don't know what model it was, unfortunately, but I liked it.

You can disable those beeps.
1WayOrAnother2 · 13/07/2021 13:54

Have been wondering about the volume of my (failing) machine. It could possibly have a new life as a film-stand-in for a jumbo-jet.
