Wibu if I hired a professional to clean the oven

I do all the cleaning in the home, I like it more clean than my husband does so it's far easier and quicker if I do it myself (the exception is that he cleans the cat litter).

However - I refuse to do the oven, I hate it! Husband keeps saying he'll clean it but it's been 2 years now and it's so bad. I've found an oven cleaning specialist who will do the whole oven, shelves, and trays for just over £50.
Husband thinks it's an unnecessary expense and he'll do it but it's been a week since I brought it up and the oven is still awful; would I be unreasonable to hire the cleaner for a day I'm working at home and just not tell him? I've tried explaining why I think we would've better to hire someone and that I'd pay but he's just saying no and if I want it done I should do it, surely hiring someone comes into that category

The only alternative is to buy a pyrolytic oven. if you haven't got one, cleaner it is!

Life is too short to deep clean an oven.

Cookie79 · 12/07/2021 15:10

Do it - I paid £70 last week for mine and it’s money well spent. It’s so shiny and lovely now.

We moved in in May and the house was in a dreadful state to be honest and the oven was disgusting. It took us about 6 hours to get it vaguely useable until the oven chap could fit us in last week.

I do keep ovens clean but i need a clean slate to start with. Might get it done once a year though.

Also got an oven liner from Lakeland for the bottom of oven so that might help keep things cleaner going forwards too.

Definitely go for it.

Dixiechickonhols · 12/07/2021 15:13

A professional oven clean is nothing like diy. It’s like new after. Had mine done Friday (oven, microwave, hob, extractor hood £65) and it’s made me smile every time I’ve seen it. It’s so shiny.

pinkcircustop · 12/07/2021 15:14

YANBU to get someone to do it but YABU to essentially lie to your husband over such a small matter.

Simply say “if you don’t do it by X date I’m getting a cleaner in” and follow through.

I usually get mine done every 4 months , even though I quite like cleaning I can never manage to get it as nice and spotlessly clean as the oven cleaning people get it ( I usually pop the racks through the dishwasher in between once a week
I have a brand new range cooker so it's not a difficult job to make it nice

However 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩
First time they cleaned the new cooker they removed the door and all it's fittings as per usual then after cleaning they replaced it and put it all back together , except they broke the clip that attaches the main door seal - when I went to use it the door would not close , I had to buy a new rubber seal and
My DP replaced it for me
A year on and they managed to leave a small spacing out of the door hinge attachment and when cooking Christmas dinner the whole bloody door slipped off and landed on my toe which split open - nightmare - luckily we had another oven - I had to order a part through my supplier and have it repaired
I may have been unlucky but am understandably quite hesitant to call them back to clean it again

No problem with previous cleaners at another property though

LadyJaye · 12/07/2021 15:18

Why would you be being unreasonable? I get mine done twice a year, costs £50 per clean.

Clean ovens are more efficient, therefore saving energy and ultimately money - plus, the last time I had it done, the chap spotted a problem with the fan, which I was then able to get fixed (within warranty, by the manufacturer, so no cost!) before the whole damn thing stopped working.

TheOrigRights · 12/07/2021 15:29

Before and after. I don't begrudge £50 on this. There is no way I'd ever get it that clean.

nb it had not been done for YEARS, and that was by me. It brings me joy.

idontlikealdi · 12/07/2021 15:34

Mine was £100, best £100 I've spent in a long time.

firstimemamma · 12/07/2021 15:37

I do this once a year, £50 and the oven is literally like new every time. Do it!

TheOrigRights · 12/07/2021 15:40

[adds oven cleaning vouchers to Xmas list for every adult I know who owns an oven]

dilemma456 · 12/07/2021 15:48

Do it.

I had mine done professionally once and it was as if I had a new oven - they'll clean it far better than you ever can.

In fact, I think I may treat myself it it again soon sad isn't it that we now see someone else cleaning our oven as a treat!

334bu · 12/07/2021 16:48

The best birthday present I ever gave myself. Ovens looked like new and I can now see inside. This is not an extravagance , this as far as I am concerned is now a necessity.

MatildaTheCat · 12/07/2021 16:55

I’m having mine done this week. It didn’t occur to me to check with DH if it was ok, it’s not like booking a world cruise.

Just do it!

Get it booked. I work FT , so did DH until he retired.
We used to take a week of half days each twice a year & get the carpets professionally shampoo'd, the oven cleaned, deep valets on both cars, deep clean in the house ( had a weekly cleaner for 1.5 hours , deep clean was 2 cleaners for 4 hours) & got the dogs ( Labradors) hand stripped & groomed Grin

BashfulClam · 12/07/2021 17:35

It’s so good, they bring it back to pretty
Much showroom condition, like a full new oven. I eat eating biscuits and watching telly and my oven was spotless and worth every penny.

Reloxa · 12/07/2021 17:37

Yes, pay someone, it's well worth it, and I say that as someone who generally is too tight to get anyone in to do a household chore I could do myself.

MrsClatterbuck · 12/07/2021 17:39

I did this when moving house. One less thing to do. A big thing in my book tbh.

Comtedemontecristo · 12/07/2021 17:51

I once read a story about a woman whose husband was a decorator. She wanted their hallway done but he never got round to it. So she did it herself, like any strong independent woman would 😁 When he came home he was mortified and said everyone would think he was a crap decorator so spent the evening redoing it 😂

Cowbells · 12/07/2021 17:56

Ime husbands promise to do jobs they think are overpriced but then don't do them. £50 is a bargain. The oven-cleaner's business would not exist if there weren't scores of other people locally who agree with you.

You've reminded me we need to get ours done.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 12/07/2021 17:57

I NEVER clean ovens or cars, life is way too short.

I get my oven professionally cleaned once a year. The car goes to the car wash or the local hand car wash which is cheap as chips.

Both of them do a better job than I ever would.

RoseMartha · 12/07/2021 19:45

It is worth it. I had it done in my old house before I moved. And tbh I might use it again where I am now

Taliskerskye · 12/07/2021 19:51

Why do you say your DH “helps”

bridgetreilly · 12/07/2021 19:57

It’s the best £50 I ever spend.
