Police riot vans have just broken up a brawl in my town centre

I’m disgusted.

I’m glad we didn’t win. Car alarms everywhere. Friend was in Manchester centre with her partner and there are apparently riots starting up there and she was terrified getting her taxi home.

Admittedly less so with nightclubs etc closed, but Manchester Centre is usually like that on weekends, don't think I've ever been out and not seen riot vans and pockets of trouble. Not saying that is acceptable either, but it's a men drinking issue rather than solely a football one imo.

It most certainly is not like that in Manchester most weekends whatsoever Confused

Police being visible doesn’t mean there are riots and trouble, I think some people must live very sheltered lives.

I’m out in Manchester regularly and it’s incredibly rare to see trouble, just because it’s busy doesn’t mean it’s kicking off.

Illogicalmadness · 12/07/2021 09:08

There might be work going on with the child in the background. I wouldn't expect the teacher to discuss it with the rest of the class. However, you have to wonder how a child by the age of 10 has picked up such deeply held racist views.

Also, the child comes from a very middle class, professional family so not the background you'd expect. Racism is endemic in all areas of society & sometimes the quietly spoken one's are the most vile.

iamtopazmortmain · 12/07/2021 09:12

I would not want to be the BAME child chosen to partner a child with racist views - why should they have to suffer unpleasant company?

CallmeHendricks · 12/07/2021 09:16

Wow, that's awful about the school child. I expect that there is more going on behind the scenes to deal with it than most might know, but on the surface, it could be argued that it is better/safer for the black child to be safeguarded from having to pair up with this child and potentially be verbally abused.

Naunet · 12/07/2021 09:19

For fuck sake, I can’t believe people here are making excuses for men acting like brain dead, thuggish apes. It’s fucking shameful and if women were acting like this, throwing glasses, getting naked on top of buses and beating up other people, it would be front page news. Frankly I think they should all be rounded up and put in zoo enclosures for a month or two. They want to act like animals, they can be treated like animals.
And absolutely fucking disgusting to minimise the fact that when England lose DV INCREASES by 38%. Yes those women know they aren’t being smacked about by football, it’s the excuse MEN use because they’re upset their team lost. We should be highlighting this every fucking time rather than expecting women to shut up about it in case they ruin men’s fun. 🙄

Not for the past 18 months or so because of lockdown, but before that borderline rioting was pretty common on a Friday or Saturday night. Not everywhere in central Manchester and not at every moment obviously - you could get lucky and not see anything for a couple of weeks if you were careful.

As for Police being visible doesn’t mean there are riots and trouble - sure, the police are there to prevent disorder as well as to deal with it when it occurs... but they tend not to be out in force in places where they're not expecting trouble you know! Grin

@TiddyAndFletch

It's on BBC News that some of the England players are being targeted with racist abuse online:

www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/57800431

I know not all football fans are like this, but those who are disgrace our country.

There was a foul racist comment towards the three players who missed penalties on a thread last night from a long term Mumsnetter. The actual thread was deleted (which given that much of it was obviously responding to the racist, seems a little odd and smacked rather of being keen to cover it up) but I'd be interested to know if HQ have banned the poster and reported then to the police as the police are, on the BBC this morning asking people to do if they see any examples of racial abuse on social media.

It's also worth noting that there was a fucktonne of fake videos, fake tweets and fake "breaking" being circulated (also on here) That doesn't of course excuse any violent or abusive behaviour that did happen.

Here in Italy my town centre was trashed, things burned down, cars smashed to bits, coffins with England written on them set alight etc.

It's really not just England.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 12/07/2021 09:37

It's not just in England/UK, and it's not just football.

TheDevils · 12/07/2021 09:38

Nobody is fucking minimising DV. I do a lot of charity work for DV charities and I lost my mum to DV. I know the stats ..... but to blame it on football is lazy.
It's men not the occasion. If men are using football as an excuse than the issue is still MEN not football.

DV also increases at Christmas, on hot days, bank holidays etc. The common denominator is men and alcohol.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 12/07/2021 09:38

They may not be British or indeed football fans. It's just any excuse to be racist for some people.

I very clearly said, we all know it’s not football - you think a woman being beaten up by her husband, thinks it s a football beating her?

The fact is, when England lose, there is a MASSIVE increase in domestic violence - of course that should be highlighted. Why shouldn’t it be talked about? How does it help to not mention it?

FunMcCool · 12/07/2021 09:52

Ok… sorry I’m not sure what’s the point of this thread?

TheDevils · 12/07/2021 09:53

What a ridiculous comment.

We absolutely should be talking about domestic violence and it is important to highlight and understand the risk factors but there are so many people who are blaming football. Football is the occasion not the reason. It's just lazy and further demonises a sport that is working hard to challenge and change the negative images and connotations. It also creates a narrative around perceptions of football fans and DV perpetrators which again is lazy and potentially dangerous.

The blame lies solely with the perpetrators. There is no justification for DV and explicitly linking it to football sometimes feels like people are offering up a reason. These men are violent and will be violent regardless.

Tossblanket · 12/07/2021 10:08

People drink and become cunts every day.

There are brawls in town centres every weekend.
Then we need to crack down on it every weekend, not just when there’s football.

It always was when I used to go out every weekend- perhaps an irony in proclaiming those who have seen it plenty live sheltered lives.

Abusive men are the issue re: DV. Exasperated by football and alcohol sadly in many cases, but it's important to not lose sight of the fact that it is men. Men men men men men. Not a game, and people shouldn't just be shouting about it when there's a match on, I expect to see radio silence until the next tournament from a load of people who have posted about it.

lactofree · 12/07/2021 11:04

Win or lose, you would have had the same chaos

Less racist abuse though

Our boy Saka told to fuck off back to Nigeria. He was born in London Hmm

Dh works in Manchester every weekend. Either as pub/club/restaurant security. Or as security on public transport. It's bad every week. People are shot at, threatened with knives, bottled, stabbed, attacked, assaulted every day. It might not make the MEN, but it's every day.

Some thugs trashed the Tesco metro up near Picadilly the other morning, that was mid afternoon, large group of older teens/young adults. A girl was run over and left for dead a fortnight ago outside a club in town. There were people merrily kicking off all weekend. The volume of people was greater yesterday in general, so more people to kick off with.

Just because you don't see the trouble where you are out, doesn't mean it isn't happening. And there isn't enough police or riot vans to make it safe anyway.

SemiFeralDalek · 12/07/2021 11:37

Half a sentence missed and inserted in the middle. Should be :

*the other morning it kicked off about mask wearing again with a group of people starting early for the Wednesday football.

aubreyii · 12/07/2021 11:47

I'm sick to fucking death of men's aggression and violence. Yes there are some women like that, but across the world and through all the ages past, men have committed appalling violent and abusive acts. Why the fuck aren't men looking at their behaviour and trying to evolve beyond the brute?

@Geamhradh I didn't see that, surprised that it would happen on MN.

I do feel a slight sense of relief that it's over as even I got caught up in football fever like loads of others. Shame that for some it trips over into violence.

Are we all supporting BLM and the abolition of the police or not then?

Should all these police and riot vans disperse?
