Book recommendations for 8 year old boy...

.... to read independently over Summer. He's just turned 8. I've had some luck with Horrid Henry, but looking for some variety. Are "great stories" without buckets of rudeness/attitude a thing anymore? I bought a Secret Seven set, but he's no interest. He enjoys me reading Harry Potter to him, but they would be too advanced for independent reading. His Aunt bought him the set of Diary of Wimpy Kid, but I'm not ecstatic about some of the references within e.g. the "hot girls" at school etc. Confused Thanks in advance.

No doubt someone will be on ro to recommend David Walliams books but they're an absolute crock of shit don't touch them with a barge pole.

Some ideas on here though I've not read them personally www.lovereading4kids.co.uk/genre/7/7-plus-readers.html

My 8yo is currently devouring the Roman Mysteries series. I've never seen her so engrossed.

heymammy · 11/07/2021 17:19

Ds is 9 and last year he was very into the David Baddiel books...all of them!

cantkeepawayforever · 11/07/2021 17:19

Jack Stalwart? (Elizabeth Singer Hunt)
Mr Gum?
The 13-Story Treehouse series? (not great literature, but very popular with that age)

cantkeepawayforever · 11/07/2021 17:20

The Boy who Grew Dragons (and sequels)

toffeebutterpopcorn · 11/07/2021 17:21

Escape From Mr. Lemoncello’s Library is good. Have a look through the Newbury Prize list.

Swatsup · 11/07/2021 17:22

Land of roar, return to roar and battle of roar by Jenny Mclachlan. Managed to wean my kids off David Walliams with these.

cantkeepawayforever · 11/07/2021 17:22

If he likes football, then there are lots of series of 'Football Academy'-type books that combine football with adventure.

KarmaStar · 11/07/2021 17:44

If he likes horses my friend flicka and the series are great.

Phial · 11/07/2021 18:00

Space Oddity Christopher Edge is fun. Christopher Edge's other books are great for boys/girls a bit older, but this one is pitched perfectly for 8/9 year olds.

LifeIsAMotorway · 11/07/2021 18:03

I have no knowledge of what 8 year olds read, but how about the lemony snicket series? Not sure if that’s the right age or a bit older.

BikeRunSki · 11/07/2021 18:03

The 13 Storey Treehouse books were my ds’s gatewsy to “proper” children’s books ie: without cartoony illustrations that take up half the space.

careerchangeperhaps · 11/07/2021 18:05

DS (9) has enjoyed the following over the past year or two:

13-Storey Treehouse
Tom Gates
How to train your Dragon
Diary of a Wimpy Kid
The Accidental Prime Minister
David Walliams books
Famous Five
The Railway Children
Attack of the Demon Dinner Ladies
David Baddiel books

@cantkeepawayforever

The Boy who Grew Dragons (and sequels)
Love these. I’ve also got an 8 year old boy and we’ve had success with the hopeless heroes series, captain underpants, pokemon books. He’s started reading Percy Jackson but that’s quite hard work for him. We’ve also got the horrible histories books that he’ll dip in and out of.
Proudboomer · 11/07/2021 18:06

Mine loved captain underpants quite a bit of toilet humour but I don’t care if it encourages reading.

LostThings · 11/07/2021 18:07

The Bolds series by Julian Clary. My 8 year old finds them very funny.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 11/07/2021 18:08

Adventures of Mr Penguin are quite good.

DrDiva · 11/07/2021 18:35

We’ve enjoyed many of the above too. Also Wilf the Mighty Worrier series, and wigglesbottom primary.

HorriderHenry · 11/07/2021 18:40

The Roar series as above, and also Dragon Legend. He loves Captain Underpants (I don’t, but he likes it so that’s fine). The shorter Roald Dahls - Magic Finger, Fantastic Mr Fox, The Twits - were also good.

Ffsfgswth123 · 11/07/2021 18:49

My 8 year old doesn't enjoy reading but we've had some luck with these series:
Roald Dahl
Pokemon
Diary of a wimpy kid
Goosebumps
Stink
The Shakepeare Stories (great introduction to the classical plays for young readers)
Football themed books like Ultimate Football Heroes

PeonyTime · 11/07/2021 18:55

How to train your dragon series (or the Wizard of Once ) both by Cowell
Wings of Fire series By Sutherland
Warriors by Hunter.
Survival series by Grylls (get the right ones - he has 3 kids series,)
Are the things that turned my child who didnt pick up a book at the start of lockdown into a reader.

whippetwoman · 11/07/2021 19:00

My just turned 9 year old boy reads the following:

Bunny vs Monkey
Dog Man
Adventure Time
The Phoenix Colossal Comics Collection
Dog Man

All are cartoon type books but he loves them. He also reads:

Beast Quest (formulaic but he likes them)
Pugs of the Frozen North
Spy Dog
Mr Gum books
Factopia
Horrible Histories - a big hit here

He’s enjoyed having the Narnia books, Charlotte’s Web and Little House in the Big Woods read to him recently. His favourite was One Dog and His Boy by Eva Ibbotson

whippetwoman · 11/07/2021 19:00

Sorry about the double Dog Man! He does love them though!

jajabanks · 11/07/2021 19:05

Who let the gods out max Evans ate brilliant and Frank cotteral Boyce books

GameSetMatch · 11/07/2021 19:05

The ‘stink’ series is great, my seven year old is obsessed with them! The librarian suggested them to us and they’ve been great! stinkmoody.com/
