Book recommendations for 8 year old boy...

.... to read independently over Summer. He's just turned 8. I've had some luck with Horrid Henry, but looking for some variety. Are "great stories" without buckets of rudeness/attitude a thing anymore? I bought a Secret Seven set, but he's no interest. He enjoys me reading Harry Potter to him, but they would be too advanced for independent reading. His Aunt bought him the set of Diary of Wimpy Kid, but I'm not ecstatic about some of the references within e.g. the "hot girls" at school etc. Confused Thanks in advance.

The Mr Gum series by Andy Stanton. DS loved them at that age, in fact we all did. Very funny...or "funty" if you've read the books.

Rosesareyellow · 11/07/2021 19:12

Tales of a Fourth Grade nothing by Judy Blume - there’s 3 books that then follow on too. Very funny.

bridgetreilly · 11/07/2021 19:15

The Ottoline series by Chris Riddell.

NotTheMrMenAgain · 11/07/2021 19:16

How about the Goosebumps series of books - there are loads of them, DD rattled through them at around that age.

Wed Wabbit Lisa Evans?

My 8yo loves David Walliams and also the Adventure mysteries series. Roald Dahl and Micheal Morpurgo are also some of his favourites.

busybanana · 11/07/2021 19:21

My 8 year old boy has recently enjoyed these series - Bear Grylls (the ones for younger children), the 13 Storey Treehouse, Adventures On Trains, The Train to Impossible Places (I think that one is a series but I'm not certain), various Enid Blytons (mostly Secret Seven and Famous Five), Agents of the Wild, the Laura Ingalls Wilder books (Little House on the Prairie, etc). I've read him some of the Roman Mysteries books, which he's enjoyed, but I don't think he's read any himself. Oh, and the first three or four Harry Potter.

Ingleduh · 11/07/2021 19:25

My reluctant readers of similar age enjoy the 13 Story Treehouse series and Wigglebottom Primary books.

Flowers2020bloom · 11/07/2021 19:27

13 Storey Tree House series and the Tom Gates books are hits with my DS

When I taught year 3 and 4 I used to read them the Percy Jackson books and Artemis fowl books. They were great successes with each class I read them to

Shelby2010 · 11/07/2021 19:41

Beast Quest

Leeds2 · 11/07/2021 19:43

Jeremy Strong books.

Humphrey the Hamster books.

Nohomemadecandles · 11/07/2021 19:45

Iguana Boy series is really accessible for a less enthusiastic reader.
Flat Stanley
Pamela Butchart's books - Yeti etc

They are probably labelled up as 7 Yr old but they are good "chapter" books with decent humour and won't challenge so a great way to enjoy reading. I'm a believer in fostering a love for reading by whatever means! Who cares what age a publisher thinks they are for?
Graphics like Dogman are good too.

maddening · 11/07/2021 19:45

Another vote for beast quest and there are the Tom Palmer books which have been a big hit: football, rugby and a series about football and planes.

Just started my almost 7 year old on Terry Pratchett and hoping it’s going to keep him reading all the way through school 🤞🏻

Happymama24 · 11/07/2021 19:55

Dogman and captain underpants

Wishihadanalgorithm · 11/07/2021 20:08

What about the horrible histories? Maybe your boy isn’t keen on fiction so history, science and geography books might suit him more?
