Crop tops

My XH has said in the past that our teenage DD’s 15 and 18 should not wear crop tops (he said it when oldest was 15). Seeing as this is pretty much all you can buy in the shops at the moment as it’s the fashion and plenty of people are wearing them would I be unreasonable to allow them to wear them? XH is no longer in contact with our DD’s so it’s not as though I’d be going against his wishes, this is not the issue, I'm more interested in a general consensus of how people think about crop tops. They’re just high enough to expose their belly button. Thanks in advance.

I think some posters are confusing crop tops with bralette tops? The posters have put pictures up of cropped tops, how are they offensive or vulgar?

I’m imagining a tshirt that finishes just below the breasts? Is that not a crop top?

The ones in the pictures are showing an inch or 2 of skin, I wouldn’t call them crop tops (nor do I find those vulgar) but I probably wouldn’t notice it was cropped as the waist is so high.

You should allow her to wear them while she can. I haven't been able to wear a crop top for decades. Nothing wrong with them. Especially the ones that are like super short t shirts.

rantymcrantface66 · 13/07/2021 06:48

They are awful, look awful, and are just an excuse for retailers to get more money off teenagers in particular.

Surely that's true of any and all passing fashion trend? Although the cropped t shirts have been around a good while now.

If you try and dictate wardrobe style to a 15 year old, you will drive her away.

@StrangeToSee

Don’t thousands of men walk down the street with no top on at all at this time of year? No one bats an eyelid; never mind any ‘uproar’.

Do they? I’ve seen shirtless men on the beach, at the pool, very occasionally in parks during a heatwave.

‘Very occasionally’? Have you ever been to a park?

@BogRollBOGOF

I wore crop tops in the 90s. Still wear sports ones now in hot weather.

As long as they're appropriate with a dress code (e.g. a limited amount if relaxed employers with minimal H&S concern would be fine with them) they can be practical clothing.
Although I might mutter something about chilled kidneys in the winter Grin

When I used to wear crop tops back in the day my dm often used to tell me I’d forgotten my kidney warmer.Grin

With the way modern jeans are cut, you can tuck an average crop top into them. 😂 No tummy showing!

that is just a lazy excuse, you still PARENT a 15 year old.

There are many valid points in a discussion about telling a teen what to wear or not, but the "they won't like" it is not one!

StarlightLady · 13/07/2021 14:23

@onlyhereforthecake - disagree with me by all means. But don’t describe my view as “lazy”!

I didn’t say “ they won’t like” either. What l dis say was “you will drive her away”. Quite different.

onlyhereforthecake · 13/07/2021 14:36

it's the same. You advocate not parenting your child in case they disagree and react badly! That is wrong on so many levels, and yes, lazy, because you just go for an easy life.

StarlightLady · 13/07/2021 18:46

Goodness me. We are talking about a 15 year old wearing a cropped top here, which her peers probably do. We are not talking about her going to an all night orgy.

And it’s all because of a male who wants to be controlling about an 18 year old woman (that is what she is) as well.

I’d hate to see what would happen if something important arose.

lap90 · 13/07/2021 18:49

Nothing wrong with them and plenty of people wear them with 'high waisted' skirts/shorts e.t.c, so there's really not much on show tbh.
