Crop tops

My XH has said in the past that our teenage DD’s 15 and 18 should not wear crop tops (he said it when oldest was 15). Seeing as this is pretty much all you can buy in the shops at the moment as it’s the fashion and plenty of people are wearing them would I be unreasonable to allow them to wear them? XH is no longer in contact with our DD’s so it’s not as though I’d be going against his wishes, this is not the issue, I'm more interested in a general consensus of how people think about crop tops. They’re just high enough to expose their belly button. Thanks in advance.

I doubt him mentioning it to the girls years ago will have them questioning it now tbh. Most kids as teens are eating til they are roof the corner to roll up their skirts etc regardless of what their parents view is currently let alone years ago when they were dc and different clothing ideas might apply. It's normal to get home and not be sure of something as things often look different in shop changing rooms or to how you imagined if you didn't try it on. Just reassure them they look great (if they do, teens can get it wrong so some gentle tactful guidance doesn't go amiss if they ask)

honeylulu · 11/07/2021 12:50

Your ex and what his said suggests he had/has an unpleasant view of women and girls. (Exposing skin is giving men the come on, poor men can't control themselves around slutty manipulative women, wives and daughters should do as they are told and not answer back. Am I right? )

Tell your daughters they can choose to wear what they like and feel comfortable in.

As for views on crop tops, in warm weather and being young and slim seems like a perfect time to wear them if that's what they like. I wore them when I was younger. I wouldn't now as my figure and skin is no longer as lovely as it once was so I prefer clothes with more coverage. I have a daughter and if she wanted to wear them I wouldn't bat an eyelid. They cover a lot more than you would see on the beach and that's a public space!

SantanaBinLorry · 11/07/2021 12:55

@UndertheCedartree

Crop tops are appropriate dress for warm weather. What is so offensive about seeing someone's belly button? My 9 yo has a couple.
Your daughter has a couple of belly buttons?!? Grin

I know thats not what you meant but it made me giggle.

Mydogisagentleman · 11/07/2021 13:00

He would have a turn if he saw what my DD favourite outfit is.
Black suspenders, over the knee socks, DM boots and a vest top with a stretchy mini skirt.
I think it looks ghastly, but it’s her choice

Sandinmyknickers · 11/07/2021 13:35

Is your xh basically saying that he sexualises young girls when he sees them in crop tops? Confused
Otherwise I cant think of any issue as to why your 15 year old shouldn't wear one...and the xh just sounds misogynistic and slightly vile....sorry, but at least he's ex

They are awful, look awful, and are just an excuse for retailers to get more money off teenagers in particular.

Dignity and pride in appearance is enough. Regardless of what men think.

Just because you wouldn't feel dignified or proud in a crop top doesn't mean other people don't.

I googled crop top and none of the images lacked dignity whatsoever.

What a strange comment.
onlyhereforthecake · 12/07/2021 11:43

As long as it's not for an interview or a funeral, there's nothing inappropriate.

Young and with the right body, they should make the most of it!
You are only young once, and you never know if you will stay slim. It''s fashionable, most teens look great, go for it.

Not saying that a middle age woman with killer abs should hide them either, on the contrary!

NickingBentCoppers · 12/07/2021 11:43

Of course teenagers should wear crop tops if they want to!
As should anyone- I'm 40 and wear cropped tees.

queenMab99 · 12/07/2021 11:43

I did once tell a junior library assistant ( I was her manager) that a crop top was not suitable or professional to wear for work.

I think crop tops look vulgar and inappropriate unless you’re at the beach, a nightclub or at home on a hot day.

They look like lingerie.

I don’t want to see exposed navels or expanses of flesh however slim the wearer is.

Imagine the uproar if men wore crop tops?

There are so many nice, less revealing tops for teenagers. I think you’re shopping in the wrong place.

By letting them wear crop tops you also expose them to the risk of somebody making a cruel comment eg calling them fat or laughing at their navel.

I haven’t seen anyone wear a crop top outside of the gym or beach, for about 15 years!

Blippibloppi · 12/07/2021 11:55

I had loads of crop tops and see through clothes as a teen in the 90s. I've just walked back from the gym in my leggings and bra top because I was roasting. I'm nearly 40 and a mum of 2 - no one died, fainted, gave me abuse or was horrified by my navel.

Let them wear what they want.

onlyhereforthecake · 12/07/2021 12:09

It's 2021... unclench.
All the teens are wearing them. And some less young women who are slim enough.

Imagine the uproar if men wore crop tops?

Don’t thousands of men walk down the street with no top on at all at this time of year? No one bats an eyelid; never mind any ‘uproar’.

We used to wear these as teens in the 80s, and I can’t ever recall there being an uproar then, or any more unwanted male attention as a result. Were men less creepy then? Were boys less bold? No. The difference was that we didn’t have the pressure of social media telling us what our bodies should look like, so we weren’t self conscious about our varying shapes and sizes. Boys didn’t get their idea of what women look like from porn. The internet has a lot to answer for.

I think some posters are confusing crop tops with bralette tops? The posters have put pictures up of cropped tops, how are they offensive or vulgar?

I think you’re right. It’s cropped tops we all wore in the 80s, as per the PPs photos. Nothing like underwear!
BogRollBOGOF · 12/07/2021 15:55

I wore crop tops in the 90s. Still wear sports ones now in hot weather.

As long as they're appropriate with a dress code (e.g. a limited amount if relaxed employers with minimal H&S concern would be fine with them) they can be practical clothing.
Although I might mutter something about chilled kidneys in the winter Grin

FAQs · 12/07/2021 16:03

Chilled kidneys Grin I’m going to remember that one when my daughter wears one ha!

80s fashion seems to be have a revival at the moment! As long as the neon mismatched socks don’t return. Shock

motogogo · 12/07/2021 16:04

I personally hate them and my DD's know this, dd1 never wears them Dd2 loves them

onlyhereforthecake · 12/07/2021 17:15

Bralette tops are fine too! Just depends on the context they are being worn obviously. Not suitable for work or school, but that wasn't the question.

newnortherner111 · 12/07/2021 17:19

In the 80s and 90s there was not social media, nor smartphones. So less opportunity for men to be creepy, though I'm sure plenty were, some of whom at the BBC as has subsequently come to light.

StrangeToSee · 12/07/2021 17:51

Do they? I’ve seen shirtless men on the beach, at the pool, very occasionally in parks during a heatwave.
