Finding private yellow space parking

Worrysaboutalot · 11/07/2021 09:39

Looking for work whilst in a wheelchair.

Last week I had an interview that had me thinking, where do I find parking for a job?

In the past I simply paid at a local private car park for a space. However now I need the wider spaces and hatching, in order to exit/enter my car with double crutches and to load/offload my chair from the boot.

The job I interviewed for didn't have parking spaces and no private car park I have used outside shopping centres has yellow spaces and of course those spaces are time limited for customers.

Clearly I will keep looking but I welcome suggestions. Especially as I don't want to be offered a job, only to be unable to get into the building, as I can't park!

For the interview at least, could you get a lift or take a taxi? Some places will reimburse costs of attending interviews if you ask them. Then when at the interview you can ask them about day to day parking.

What industry are you in?

MouldyPotato · 11/07/2021 09:47

I'd ask about parking when you arrange the interview

I got my husband to take me for the interview and as long as he is working from home he will take time off to take me to future interviews.

It is what to do when I find a job, that I need help with.

As I looked for and couldn't find any private rentable yellow spaces near this interview location, which started me thinking.

They gave parking options, none of which had yellow spaces, hence my thread.

Yellow lines and a sign on the boot? This works for me (although appreciate it may be completely different as it's my passenger and not me that uses a wheelchair)

LIZS · 11/07/2021 09:54

If you need it for a recognised disability there should be designated spaces locally.

idontlikealdi · 11/07/2021 09:56

I've never seen parking like you describe tbh

MouldyPotato · 11/07/2021 09:58

Worrysaboutalot ah sorry didn't realise they had given you unsuitable options.

I thought parking was limited to a few hours on yellow lines? But I will check that.

The road might work in some cases. However I do need a 6foot clear gap behind the car or else I can't load/unload chair and a drop curb close by, as I will be offloading into the road and will have to stay in the road until the next available drop curb. I do have a sign in my back window about needing 6ft space for wheelchair hoist.

Would it be cheaper to take an Uber to and from work each day than pay for parking?

(If using Uber means one less car in the family, that might help.)

(I just googled, and the waiting time for wheelchair-adapted vehicles might be an issue.)

Not sure what this means. I have a blue badge and am happy to pay for parking. I need to know where people rent yellow spaces.

If you have a disability you can contact the transport dept at the council regarding an accessible space nearby, won't be private but will be restricted to badge holders. Otherwise all public car parks must have disabled spaces and many rent them by the month. Another idea is rent my driveway or just park who rent private spaces, they won't be specifically for a disabled space but may be suitable if on a private drive.

leopardspotsdotdotdot · 11/07/2021 10:05

Could you try www.justpark.co.uk ? Or talk to local council about creating a space in a local car park?

Once I have found a job, I will talk to the council in that bury. Any idea of lead times, as most jobs want you in post within a month?

Thank you. I never thought about private drive rental. That is a great idea and will enable me to look for work in more rural areas.

However private drive rentals are not available for city centres, any options for that type of parking.

I’ve no idea I’m afraid! The other option is to park over 2 spaces and buy two tickets, leave a note within your car for anyone that thinks your a cheeky fucker 😂

Last weeks job would be 40 mimite commute each way, plus I am already signed up to a three year mobility contract and I need this car, as I use it to transport my four kids and my wheelchair around.

Uber is a no go as I can't lift my chair (it is a powerchair not a light active manual chair) and I haven't found a local wheelchair accessible taxi company yet, I will keep looking.

Lol, yes I suppose that is a good option. As long as neither cars on either side encroach over the lines because of how I am parked. However I am filing this as a possibility.

ChrissyPlummer · 11/07/2021 10:17

Any hotels nearby? They would almost certainly have the spaces you require. I have a contract for monthly parking at a hotel near where I work as we don’t have parking at all. If there is it’s definitely worth talking to them.

purpledagger · 11/07/2021 10:23

Access to work, may be able to help you with the cost of taxis.

Pixiedown123 · 11/07/2021 10:28

In my local city all the car parks have disabled spaces although the hatchings are to the side not behind the car.

There was a post by someone with the same problem a while ago, and they spoke to the car park who agreed they could park across two spaces

Worrysaboutalot · 11/07/2021 11:00
  • Access to work
  • Hotel parking
  • Park over two spaces with permission and paying twice the cost

All noted. Sigh, guess until I find a job, I am not going to be able to sort out parking.

Though I will certainly talk to Access to work am see what time scales they can offer. I don't think I will qualify

OP posts:
mrsbyers · 11/07/2021 11:11

Check out the access to work scheme - they will possibly cover transport costs to and from work

Worrysaboutalot · 11/07/2021 11:12

...I meant I don't think I would qualify for help with a taxi from 'access to work', when I can drive the hand adapted car I have on lease from the mobility scheme IYSWIM.

I think that is more for people who can't drive, isn't it?

They are, my dad used them in London frequently.

With a blue badge you can park on double yellows but only for 3 hours.

Good luck, I know what a pain it is I constantly look for BB bays even though according to MN there are millions of empty ones in every town /city in the UK Wink
